Betty Lee Bell
Betty Lee Bell, 78, of Dodge City, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Trinity Manor in Dodge City.
The daughter of James William and Mildred Pauline (Snyder) Sloan, she was born Dec. 31, 1923, at Centralia, Ill., and grew up there. She moved to Newton in 1959 and to Dodge City in 1961.
On June 21, 1964, she married Billy G. Bell at Winfield.
Mrs. Bell worked as a hostess at the Silver Spur Restaurant in Dodge City from 1961 to 1996. She and her husband managed the concession stand at the Civic Center and coordinated sales for scholarships for the Dodge City Community College Alumni/Booster Association. She was a member of First Christian Church of Dodge City, and a life member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the DCCC Alumni/Booster Association.
She is survived by her husband; three stepdaughters, Carol Cantue, San Antonio, Michelle Specker, Springfield, Ill., and Karen Jean Bellview, Lexington, Texas; a son, Jimmy Stephenson, Garden City; a sister, Sally Reeves, Augusta; a stepson, Billy A. Bell, Blue Springs, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with Larry Williams officiating. Burial will be in Greencrest Cemetery, Dodge City.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the DCCC Alumni/Booster Association or Trinity Manor Nursing Home, both in care of the funeral home.
Dorothy Charleen Peaster
MONTEZUMA - A viewing service for Dorothy Charleen Peaster, 72, of Montezuma, will be from 4 to 5 p.m. today at Bethel Home Inc. Chapel, Montezuma. Donald Koehn, minister, will officiate. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Golden Plains Mennonite Church, Madrid, Neb. Ray Frank and Shawn Becker, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Madrid Cemetery.
Mrs. Peaster, a former resident of Grant, Neb., died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma.
She was born Sept. 1, 1929, at Lakin, the daughter of Herman and Grace (Schmidt) Becker.
A homemaker, she was a member of Golden Plains Mennonite Church in Madrid. She had been a resident of Montezuma since February 1998 and of Bethel Home since November 1999.
On Jan. 5, 1947, she married Alvin Peaster at Atwater, Calif. He died May 17, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Larry Dean Becker.
She is survived by three sons, Bruce and Garold, both of Madrid, and David, Bonners Ferry, Idaho; a daughter, Charleen Ensz, Atwater; a brother, Donald Becker, Bonners Ferry; a sister, Veonna Toews, Scio, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Martha Anna Coulter
SYRACUSE - Funeral for Martha Anna (Theesen) Coulter, 86, of Sherwood, Ark., will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Levy Methodist Church, Sherwood, with Dr. David Bush officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Hills Mausoleum.
Mrs. Coulter died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002.
She was born May 30, 1915, at Juniata, Neb., the daughter of Jacob and Mary Theesen.
She lived in Hastings, Neb., until her marriage on Dec. 23, 1945, to John D. Coulter. They moved to Ogden and Ashdown, Ark., and then to North Little Rock, Ark., in 1960.
Mrs. Coulter enjoyed needlework, gardening and traveling. She was a member of Levy United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her husband of Outlook Pointe in Sherwood; a son, Anthony J. Coulter, Burlington, Ky.; two daughters, Shirley M. Barr, North Little Rock, and Marilyn A. Phillippy, Syracuse; a daughter-in-law; two sisters, Helen Grothen and Lavina Hoagland, both of Hastings; a sister-in-law; and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Arthur and Ernest Theesen; a son, David B. Coulter; and a granddaughter.

Olive Helen Green
LAKIN - Olive Helen Green, 93, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
She was born Aug. 9, 1908, at Miltonvale, the daughter of Fredrick and Helen (Nutting) Lachenmaier. After graduating from high school at the age of 16, she received her teaching certificate and taught school for one year. She then attended Salt City Business College.
While working for Hutchinson Co-op, she met Lester Roy Green. They were married Nov. 27, 1938, at Miltonvale. In 1942, they moved to Kearny County.
Mrs. Green worked for Jim Doyle and later worked for Charles Brown at the Register of Deeds Office. In 1953, she went to work for Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Co., retiring after 20 years with the firm. She was a member of First Christian Church of Lakin, and enjoyed crossword puzzles and gardening.
Her husband died Jan. 13, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Glenda Sue Green; two brothers, Leonard and Wilfred Lachenmaier; and a sister, Hilda Baskins.
Survivors include two daughters, Letcher Waechter, Ulysses, and Jeri Lynn Taylor, Lakin; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to High Plains Retirement Village or First Christian Church of Lakin, both in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
Frank E. Dowdell Jr.
Funeral for Frank E. Dowdell Jr., 58, of Nicodemus, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ninth Street Baptist Church in Lawrence. A second service is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Missionary Baptist Church in Nicodemus, with the Rev. I.G. Crawford officiating. Private family burial will take place later.
Mr. Dowdell died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at his home near Nicodemus.
He was born Oct. 13, 1943, at Lawrence, the son of Frank Eugene Sr. and Barbara Jean (Harding) Dowdell. A longtime area resident, he was the area assisted living manager for DSNWK. He was a member, deacon and choir member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Nicodemus.
On Dec. 23, 1966, he married Sharyn Rose Alexander at Leavenworth. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, David Dowdell, Denver, and Lateef Dowdell, Garden City; five brothers, Stephen Dowdell of Lawrence, Sakeim Dowdell, Mesa, Ariz., Marcus and Gregory Dowdell, both of Denver, and Darrell Dowdell, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Rick; and a grandchild.

Mabel Elizabeth Humes
Funeral for Mabel Elizabeth Humes, 92, of Oberlin, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Paul's Funeral Home, Oberlin, with the Rev. Keith Reuther officiating. Burial will be in Traer Cemetery, Traer.
Mrs. Humes died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Decatur County Good Samaritan Center in Oberlin.
She was born April 13, 1909, in rural Decatur County, the daughter of John H. and Katherine (Thiringer) Wolfram. She grew up in Decatur County and attended District 39 School.
On April 14, 1934, she married Frederick Reling Humes at Smith Center. They lived in Colorado before moving to Traer in 1942. A retired postmaster, she was a member of the Traer Belles.
Her husband died in 1985. She was also preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Sherman Bruce Humes; a son, Donald Carl Humes; a brother, Ralph Wolfram; and two sisters, Ruth Ketterl and Arlene Ecker.
She is survived by a daughter, Audrey Law, Garden City; a daughter-in-law; a brother-in-law; two sisters-in-law; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Malinda D. Miller
SCOTT CITY - Malinda D. Miller, 90, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Porter Residential Hospice at the Johnson Center in Littleton, Colo.
She was born Oct. 9, 1911, at Haven, the daughter of Daniel M. and Polly (Miller) Bontrager.
She moved from Yoder to Scott County in 1945. A homemaker, she assisted in the operation of the family farm. In September 2000, she moved to Denver to live with her daughter.
Mrs. Miller was a member of First Baptist Church of Scott City and was active in church admissions. She was also involved in 4-H, EHU, clubs and community affairs.
On Jan. 14, 1938, she married Harvey C. Miller at Dodge City. He died Oct. 9, 1992, at Denver. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and a brother.
Survivors include a son, Jack S. Miller, Aspen, Colo.; a daughter, Patricia James, Littleton, Colo.; a brother, Fred Bontrager, Kendall; a sister, Ida Kaufman, Buhl, Idaho; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or Scott County Hospital, both in care of the funeral home.
Aubrey Lynn Parks
Aubrey Lynn Parks, 81, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born June 24, 1920, at Montezuma, the son of Clifford K. and Rachel J. (Burnham) Parks. He grew up in Montezuma, graduating from Montezuma High School.
For most of his life, he worked in the grocery business in Sublette, Montezuma and Garden City, working as a meat cutter and later as a sales representative for Bowman Biscuit Co. He then worked in the construction business.
On Jan. 17, 1938, he married Charlotte G. Huffman at Lakin. They moved to Garden City in 1949. She died July 18, 2001. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a grandson.
Mr. Parks was a charter member of Bible Christian Church of Garden City and also served as a deacon with the church. He enjoyed oil painting and watercolor painting, fishing and traveling, especially to the Colorado mountains.
He is survived by two sons, Donovan Parks, Portland, Ore., and Aubrey A. Parks, Garden City; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Mark Ingmire officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma.
