Consuelo "Connie" Martinez
Vigil service for Consuelo "Connie" Martinez, 67, a former Garden City resident, will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Martinez died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Oct. 21, 1934, at Garden City, the daughter of Jesus and Maria (Rodriguez) Avila. She grew up and attended schools in Garden City.
Mrs. Martinez previously did odd jobs and worked as a dishwasher at a restaurant in addition to being a homemaker. A Kinsley resident for the past 15 years, she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City and enjoyed embroidery, cooking and her family activities.
Survivors include two sons, Sam Martinez, Brownsville, Texas, and Harold Martinez, Corsicana, Texas; two daughters, Yolanda Escobedo, Denver, and Rebecca Richter, Corsicana; two brothers, Ignacio "Buck" Avila and Jesse Avila, both of Garden City; three sisters, Dora Rincon, Wichita Falls, Texas, Carmen Elizarrzras, Duncanville, Texas, and Emily Perez, Dallas; and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, James Martinez.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Connie Martinez Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Delbert L. Kriegh
Delbert L. Kriegh, 72, died Friday, Jan.4, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born March 30, 1929 in Gove County, the son of Edgar Lyle and Edith Birdella Cook Kriegh. He was a resident of Scott City since 1952 and had worked at the Century Refinery and then later with the state road department.
On Dec.1,1951 he married Anita G. Sonntag in Germany. She died on Feb. 23, 1977 in Brookings, Oregon. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Scott City.
He is survived by Glenna Strickler, his long time companion, Scott City. Three daughters; Linda Humphreys, Ulysses, Brenda S. Phillips, Scott City, Stephanie A. Bollinger, Garden City. Three brothers; Edgar Kriegh, Sharon Springs, Max Kriegh, Bats City, Missouri, and Ronald Kriegh, Salina. Six sisters; Edelene Fisher, Sharon Springs, Kay Kinney, Aurora, Colo., Madge Gaschler, Longmont, Colo., Jo Ann Radiel, Salina, Lue Duffey, Rexford, and Wanda Minnix, Garden City; and six grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. A graveside service and burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Grainfield Cemetery, Grainfield.
Visitation hours are from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Delbert l. Kriegh Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home, 401 Washington, Scott City.
Allan Kent Robinson
Allan Kent Robinson, 50, a former Garden City resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in Edgerton, following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 27, 1951, at Gallup, N.M., the son of Allan James and Jewel Jeanett (Murray) Robinson.
Mr. Robinson lived in various places in Kansas and Oklahoma, including the past several years in Garden City, before moving to Edgerton to spend his last six months with his long-time friend, Cheryl Fisher, after becoming ill. He had worked as a truck driver and mechanic and at one time owned his own body shop.
He enjoyed fishing, snow skiing, dancing, music, his children and making people laugh.
Survivors include two sisters, Judith Kay Smith, Arapaho, Okla., and Martha Jeanett Nelson, Decatur, Ill.; 10 children; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jimmy.
Cremation is planned, with a graveside service later in Graham, Okla.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Liver Foundation/Hepatitis, in care of Bruce Funeral Home, Box 192, Gardner, KS 66030.
Fidel Saiz
HOLCOMB - Vigil service for Fidel Saiz, 93, will be 7 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Saiz died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at his home in Holcomb.
He was born June 18, 1908, at St. Augustine, N.M., the son of Domingo and Petra (Gonzales) Saiz, and attended school there.
A Holcomb resident since 1945, he worked for Herb Clutter for 12 years and later was the janitor at Holcomb High School. After his retirement from the school district, he worked at Gottsch Feed Yard at Deerfield.
Mr. Saiz was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. His special interests were gardening and yard work.
On Jan. 18, 1929, he married Josephine Baros at St. Augustine. She died Oct. 3, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Isidoro and Purdy Saiz; a sister, Victoria Gonzales; two half brothers, Louis and Pete Saiz; a half sister, Mary Mora; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Benny Saiz, Vernal, Utah; six daughters, Rosie Miller and Fidelia Munoz, both of Wichita, Becky Kellogg, Liberal, Edwina Neese, Dora Saiz and Paula Herrell, all of Garden City; a half brother, Ines Saiz, Wichita; a half sister, Grace Avila, Hutchinson; 23 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Keith A. Higgs
Keith A. Higgs, 55, a former Garden City resident, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Littleton, Colo.
He was born July 13, 1946, at Garden City, the son of Ernest and Lucille Higgs. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1964 and attended Garden City Community College and the University of Northern Colorado.
Mr. Higgs was employed for 30 years by Fleming Foods in Denver, Topeka and Canton, Ohio. He owned and operated a health and nutrition business in Littleton.
In 1969, he married Connie Hall in Denver. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Cory, Nevada; his parents, Kinsley; and a brother, Kent, Wyoming.
Memorial service was Nov. 30 at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary, Littleton, with inurnment at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the September 11, 2001 Fund, in care of Lynn Hallberg, 8505 W. 3rd Place, Lakewood, CO 80226.
Rev. John P. Kowal
ULYSSES - The Rev. John P. Kowal, 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at his home in rural Ulysses.
He was born Sept. 16, 1932, at Boston, the son of John Walter and Katherine Mary (Powers) Kowal. He received a bachelor of arts in philosophy at St. Fidelis College in Herman, Pa., and a master's degree in religious education from Fordham University in New York.
He was ordained for the Capuchin order on Oct. 28, 1957, at Falls Church, Va., by the Most Rev. Joseph H. Hodges of the Diocese of Wheeling. He first served in western Kansas as a teacher at St. Francis High School in Victoria from 1959 to 1965, was assistant pastor at St. Joseph's in Hays from 1965 to 1966, and then at St. Mary's in Ellis from 1966 to 1967.
From 1968 to 1981, he served as a military chaplain. During his tour in Vietnam, while being transported to celebrate Mass, his helicopter was shot down. He and the pilot survived the crash landing and were rescued. He also served as chaplain at Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Greeley, Alaska; Fort Sill, Okla.; Fort Hamilton, N.Y.; and at an American base in Germany. He twice received the Meritorious Service Award, twice was awarded a Bronze Star, three times was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, and received an Air Medal for Civic Action in Vietnam.
Incardinated as a member of the clergy of the Diocese of Dodge City in 1971, he returned to the diocese from his military chaplaincies in 1981, and served as diocesan vicar for religious education and later as chaplain at St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City.
He served as pastor at St. Rose of Lima, Great Bend, from 1984-88; Mary Queen of Peace, Ulysses, from 1988-2000; and St. Bernadette, Johnson City, from 1989-2000, and served the diocese as moderator of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in the Great Bend Deanery, was coadjutor dean for the Garden City Deanery and was a member of the Commission for Continuing Education of Priests.
Survivors include a close family friend, Dottie Stenstrom, and her husband, John, of Staughton, Mass. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Vigil service and rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore and other clergy of the Dodge City Diocese officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Ulysses American Legion.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, the St. Bernadette Catholic Church Scholarship Fund or the Cathedral Building Fund, all in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Herman A. Ehmke
LEOTI - Funeral for Herman A. Ehmke, 90, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Scott City, with the Revs. Richard Kaczor and John Riebhoff officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Cemetery.
Mr. Ehmke died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 12, 1911, at Amy, the son of Henry and Dorothy (Schierenbeck) Ehmke.
A Lane County farmer, he retired in 1990 when he moved from Dighton to Leoti. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church at Dighton.
In 1945, he married Neva Thomas at Dighton. She died in October 1976. He was also preceded in death by a brother.
He married Cleta Smith on Sept. 3, 1977 at Leoti. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Calvin Ehmke, Dighton; three daughters, Patricia Miller, Raeford, N.C., Carolyn Turner, Dighton, and Francene Bertram, Wichita; two stepsons, Jesse Smith, Leoti, and Guido Smith, Torrington, Wyo.; a stepdaughter, Cloris Case, Leoti; two brothers, Charles Ehmke, Lake Charles, La., and Raymond Ehmke, Coffeyville; a sister, Alice Reifschneider, Wichita; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several stepgrandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to the Atkinson Senior Citizens Center at Leoti or the J.O.Y. Center at Dighton, both in care of the funeral home.
