Elmer John Wetzel
TRIBUNE - Elmer John Wetzel, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.
He was born Nov. 19, 1922, at Manila, Iowa, the son of Elmer G. and Jennie A. (Johnson) Wetzel.
A lifetime resident of Greeley County, he was a farmer and former A.S.C. employee. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Odd Fellows Lodge and VFW Post No. 7521, all at Tribune, served on the nominating committee for Wheatland Electric and was a former Greeley County Farm Bureau Board member.
On Oct. 30, 1950, he married Irene Dewitt at Raton, N.M. She died Feb. 16, 1995, at Tribune.
He is survived by three sons, Jack Ozment, Dale Wetzel and Larry Wetzel, all of Tribune; a brother, Ray, Tribune; three sisters, Shirley Warden, Granby, Colo., Darlyne Wetzel, San Francisco, and Barbara Heasty, Coffeyville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Monday at the United Methodist Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Keith Fink officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to Greeley County Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
Clark B. Mitchell Jr.
Clark B. Mitchell Jr., 68, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at his home in Garden City.
He was born Oct. 27, 1933, at Paullina, Iowa, the son of Clark B. and Zalla Belle (Satterlee) Mitchell.
After graduating from high school in Paullina, he moved to Hugoton where he and his father went to work for Northern Natural Gas Co. In 1986, after 34 years with the company, he retired as field operations director. He then moved to Garden City, working first for American Electric and then starting his own business, Mitchell Warehouse Service.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of Bible Christian Church of Garden City. His special interests included visiting church members, studying genealogy and spending time with his family.
On June 22, 1991, he married Joyce Maschino Stegman at Liberal. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Clark "Burt" Mitchell III, Great Bend, and Steven Mitchell, Liberal; a daughter, Jane Zahtner, Russell; a stepson, Michael Stegman, Liberal; two stepdaughters, Teresa Gorton, St. George, and Michelle Mahaffey, Perry, Okla.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Joel; a grandchild; and a sister, Marilyn.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bible Christian Church, Garden City, with the Revs. Jeff Starkey and Mark Ingmire officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the Clark Mitchell Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Maynard W. Haflich
Maynard W. Haflich, 75, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Nov. 22, 1926, at Fairview, the son of Gaylord and Eleanora (Allen) Haflich. The family moved to Finney County when he was a child. He attended Garden City schools, graduating from Garden City High School.
Mr. Haflich had spent most of his life in Finney County and Garden City. He lived for a short time in the area of Hugo, Colo., where he farmed. He owned and operated Haflich Sand Co. in Syracuse and later was involved with his father in the rental business in Garden City.
He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion, was ordained as a minister by the Ministers for Christ Assembly of Churches, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include three sons, Terry A. Haflich, San Antonio, Greg G. Haflich, Garden City, and Steve G. Haflich, Temecula, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gary Haflich; and a sister, Lois Williams.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Carroll Morony officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Lancy Lee Heady
KALVESTA - Lancy Lee Heady, 18, of Kalvesta, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident 11 miles north of Cimarron.
The son of Blake and Marcie (Litton) Heady, he was born May 31, 1983, at Dodge City. He was a student at Liberal Community College studying law enforcement, and was a member of the Mormon Church in Dodge City.
He is survived by his parents, Kalvesta; a brother, Loyde Heady, Kalvesta; four sisters, LaTasha, Lacie and LaRay Heady, all of Kalvesta, and Kami Jo Hibbs, Dodge City; his grandparents, Walter and Nancy Mosttler, Sublette, Lawrence and Margaret Muehlenkamp, Oakley, Keith and Wanda Litton, Cimarron, and Richard Heady and Barbara Heady, both of Meade; and his great-grandparents, Ben and Geneva Ewoldt, North Platte, Neb., and Enid Heady, Herman, Neb. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Louise Litton and Orpha Keller; a cousin; and two uncles.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints, Garden City. President Mitch Williams, Elder Graven Kiser and Elder Wade Dumas will officiate. Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery, Copeland.

Luella E. Tincher
Luella E. Tincher, 86, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born Oct. 14, 1915, at Maydale, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Marak) Dohm.
When she was young, the family moved to Sharon. She lived in the Sharon and Medicine Lodge area until moving to Garden City in 1947. She moved to Olathe in 1981 and returned to Garden City in 1999. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and worked for 10 years as the housekeeper and cook for the church and rectory.
On Sept. 14, 1935, she married Jasper C. Tincher at Hutchinson. He died Aug. 1, 1973. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Mary Farnsworth, Letha Todd, Rose Ditgen and Imelda Johnson; and four brothers, Matt, Charles, Louis and Anthony Dohm.
She is survived by a son, Ron Tincher, Olathe; a daughter, Jean Klaus, Holcomb; two sisters, Anita Knight, Denver, and Patricia Dahm, North Kansas City, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Winfred C. Nicholas
Johnson CITY - Funeral for Winfred C. Nicholas, 87, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.
Mr. Nicholas died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born Aug. 14, 1914, in Stafford County, the son of Z.B. and Julia May (Leiss) Nicholas.
A resident of Stanton County since 1918, he was a farmer and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City.
On June 12, 1940, he married Marcile Cross at Johnson City. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Wendell Nicholas, Johnson City; three daughters, Sharon Frank, Great Bend, Connie Harder, Moscow, Russia, and Tammy Bray, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Ivan Nicholas, Johnson City; two sisters, Vada Mercer, Bullhead City, Ariz., and Gwen Pentland, Phoenix; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laurel Nicholas; a brother, Herman Nicholas; and a sister, Juanita Neely.

Leona Jean Dufford
Funeral for Leona Jean Dufford, 78, of Kinsley, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with the Rev. Gene Price officiating. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery.
Mrs. Dufford died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Medicalodge in Kinsley.
She was born Jan. 27, 1923, at Pawnee Rock, the daughter of William V. and Fairie Joy (Barrett) Ratcliffe.
A Kinsley resident since 1993, moving from Coolidge, Ga., she was a former manager of Dillons bakery at Garden City. She attended the United Methodist Church.
On Sept. 5, 1937, she married William J. Dufford at Larned. He died Sept. 27, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Darrell and Billie Lee Ratcliffe; two sisters, Marvel Murray and Lavivian Ratcliffe; and two grandsons.
She is survived by five sons, William E., Cameron, W.Va., Richard and Randall, both of Anchorage, Alaska, Steven, Eagle River, Alaska, and Gregory, Palmer, Alaska; six daughters, Elnetta Parramore, Coolidge, Ga., Eleanor Buhrer, Belpre, Charlotte Dufford, China Valley, Ariz., Cynthia Warden, Garden City, Kathy Conn, Columbus, Ohio, and Kimberly Dyer, Granger, Ind.; a sister, Carolyn Bignall, Topeka; a brother-in-law; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
