Calista L. Garey
ULYSSES - Funeral for Calista L. Garey, 81, of Ulysses, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Patterson Avenue Church of God, Ulysses, with the Revs. Timothy Warren and Gary Gregory officiating. Private family inurnment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.
Mrs. Garey died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.
She was born Nov. 6, 1920, at Plains, the daughter of Herman Christian and Glessie Ellen (Holmes) Bender. She graduated from Southwestern College, Winfield.
A Ulysses resident since 1955, she taught at Ulysses USD 214, retiring after a number of years. She also taught at several other Kansas communities.
She is survived by a son, William Blake, Stillwater, Okla.; two daughters, Theresa R. Barnes, Ulysses, and Marleta Powers, Houston; a brother, Holmes C. Bender, Plains; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Welcome A. Orr.

Marjorie R. Brinkmeyer
Marjorie R. Brinkmeyer, 75, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born June 4, 1926, at Garden City, the daughter of Bert and Cora Knepper. She grew up in Clay Center and attended schools there.
On Aug. 27, 1946, she married Arthur H. Brinkmeyer at Clay Center. They then moved to Garden City.
A homemaker, Mrs. Brinkmeyer also worked as a dog groomer. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Garden City Kennel Club, belonged to the Australian Terrier Club of America, and was a project leader with Beacon Booster 4-H Club for more than 20 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, James W. Brinkmeyer, Denver, and Robert F. Brinkmeyer, Golden, Colo.; three daughters, Cora L. Howard and Lana Brinkmeyer, both of Garden City, and Carol Blackford, Allen, Texas; a brother, Louis Yockey, Princeton, Ind.; two sisters, Mary Stags, Kansas City, Mo., and Willa May Strom, Melda, Idaho; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dr. Orcena Knepper.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Steve Prieb officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society, the Australian Terrier Rescue or the Standard Schnauzer Rescue, all in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
J.R. "Bob" Cleaver
Masonic graveside rites for J.R. "Bob" Cleaver, 88, of Amarillo, Texas and formerly of Garden City, was to be 1 p.m. today in Llano (Texas) Cemetery, with rites conducted by Amarillo Masonic Lodge No. 731.
Mr. Cleaver died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002.
He was born in 1913 in Mankato.
Mr. Cleaver had been a longtime resident of Garden City where he owned and operated Cleaver Cleaners before moving to Amarillo nine years ago. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge and Tyrian Masonic Lodge No. 246 in Garden City and the Midian Shrine Temple in Kansas City.
In 1966, he married Maureen White at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Jerrie Whitlock, Manchester, Vt., and Joycelyn Johnson, Arlington, Vt.; two stepdaughters, Janice Johnson, Amarillo, and Carole Del Fuoco, Terrell, Texas; a stepson, Mike Edwards; and a sister, Ruth Hicks, Granbury, Texas.

Angel L. Martinez
DEERFIELD - Evening service for Angel L. Martinez, 73, will be 7 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery.
Mr. Martinez died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
He was born March 1, 1928, at Scott City, the son of Carlos and Grace (Lopez) Martinez.
Mr. Martinez had spent most of his life in Deerfield and worked for the alfalfa mill there. He had been a resident of High Plains Retirement Village since 1998. A musician, he loved music. His hobbies were reading the Bible, fishing, gardening, baseball and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Alvin Martinez, Goodland, and Eddie Martinez, Oklahoma City; three daughters, Angelina Martinez, Wichita, Patricia McCullough, Denver, and Rose Hemmah, Billings, Mont.; a stepson, Enrique Espinoza, Deerfield; three stepdaughters, Linda Cano, Rebecca Garcia and Monica Carrillo, all of Deerfield; six brothers, Walter Martinez and Salvador Martinez, both of Wichita, Louis Martinez, Oklahoma City, Jesse Villaneuva and Tony Martinez, both of Garden City, and Toribio Martinez, Deerfield; five sisters, Linda Estrada, Joyce Hernandez and Jenny Rowland, all of Wichita, Geneva Gonzales, Garden City, and Virginia Aguilera, Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; and eight stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Daniel C. "Danny" Baldwin
Funeral for Daniel C. "Danny" Baldwin, 85, was 10 a.m. Friday at Stonewall Community Church, Stonewall, Colo., with Gary Williams and Richard Crow officiating. Graveside service followed in Stonewall Cemetery.
Mr. Baldwin died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Trinidad State Nursing Home.
Born in Garden City on Jan. 22, 1916, he was the son of Junis and Inez (Hibbard) Baldwin.
On Jan. 21, 1935, he married Maxine Stone at Garden City and they farmed north of town. Mr. Baldwin enjoyed aviation and flying, loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed carpentry work.
He is survived by his wife ; a sister, Alice Jones, Lamar, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Comi Funeral Home Chapel, Trinidad, Colo., was in charge of arrangements.
Frank Walter Jantz
MONTEZUMA - Funeral for Frank Walter Jantz, 89, will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Homeland Mennonite Church, Montezuma. Don Koehn, Sherrill Esau and Lyndon Toews, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Homeland Cemetery, Montezuma.
Mr. Jantz died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at his home in Montezuma.
He was born April 17, 1912, at Chickasha, Okla., the son of Amos and Adena (Kahn) Jantz. He worked as a railroad engineer for the railroad company.
On July 22, 1934, he married Eva Evangeline Schmidt at Halstead. She survives. He is also survived by six sons, Clifford Jantz, Couer-de-Alene, Idaho, Stanley Jantz, Prairie, Miss., Benjamin Jantz, Detroit, Texas, Kirby Jantz, Wichita, Raymond Jantz, Cottonwood, Ariz., and Jeffrey Jantz, Yukon, Okla.; two daughters, Evangeline Eck, Edmond, Okla., and Mary Ellen Bishop, Aguila, Ariz.; four brothers, Martin Jantz, Halstead, Paul Jantz, Oakdale, La., Robert Jantz, Lake Charles, La., and Eugene Jantz, DeRidder, La.; a sister, Thelma Koehn, Leland, Miss.; 22 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Gladys Carol Weibe; two brothers, Cecil and Lawrence Jantz; and a sister, Helen Smith.

Virginia I. Krey
Virginia I. Krey, 75, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Feb. 22, 1926, at Hudson, the daughter of Forest and Selma (Hitz) Love. She went to Gates Country School, graduated from Hudson High School in 1944 and then attended Stewart Beauty Academy.
She moved to Stafford and worked for Smarts Beauty Shop until the end of World War II when she met Ralph E. Krey whom she married on Nov. 17, 1946, at Stafford. They lived and farmed in Sylvia for eight years until moving to Garden City in 1955. They continued farming near Friend until 1993. He died Nov. 5, 1997, at Garden City. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Shari Gooden; and a brother, Minor Love.
Mrs. Krey was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution and Southwind Country Club, had been a UMW Circle leader and taught Sunday School, belonged to P.E.O. and the American Association of Retired Persons, and was a 4-H project leader and involved with Future Homemakers of America.
She is survived by a son, Dennis Krey, Elk River, Minn.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Janet Hernandez officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Word of Life World Missions Fund in honor of Shari Gooden, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
