Mary Euretta McCoy
LAKIN - Mary Euretta McCoy, 93, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
She was born April 30, 1908, at Cunningham, the daughter of Jacob and Lydia (McKinnis) Wallace. She spent her early years in Cunningham and attended high school there.
In 1925, she married John H. Shankle at Pratt. They moved to Lakin in 1937. In 1946, she married Verne McCoy at Cunningham. He died in 1966. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; a son, Raymond Shankle; a daughter, Margaret Walker; a great-grandson; four brothers; and two sisters.
Mrs. McCoy was a member of the Wesleyan Church of Lakin, Kearny County Historical Society and the Budget Shop Volunteers. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and spending time with her family.
She is survived by a son, Russell Shankle, Lakin; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Wesleyan Church, Lakin, with the Revs. Jeffrey Lee and Janette Post officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to High Plains Retirement Village or the Wesleyan Church, both in care of the funeral home.
Betty Mae Arnold
LAKIN - Graveside service for Betty Mae Arnold, 77, was to be 11 this morning in Attica Cemetery, with the Rev. Harry Betts officiating.
Miss Arnold died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
Born at Attica on Jan. 10, 1925, she was the daughter of James Clyde and Elizabeth Irene (Polsley) Arnold.
A Lakin resident since 1975, moving from Wichita, she was a member of the United Methodist Church of Attica. She enjoyed dolls, puzzles and collecting pennies.
Survivors include a brother, James C. Arnold, Hutchinson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Helen Atkinson and Jeannie Boden.
Memorials are suggested to High Plains Retirement Village, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.
LaVerne Hutman
LaVerne Hutman, 83, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born Oct. 19, 1918, at Lake Creek, Texas, the daughter of David William Sr. and Hazel (Thompson) Russell. She grew up in Lake Creek and attended schools there, graduating from high school. Shortly after graduating from Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas, she moved to El Paso, Texas.
On May 17, 1943, she married Thomas Hutman at Las Cruces, N.M. They moved to Trinidad, Colo., in the mid-1940s, to Elkhart in 1957 and to Garden City in 1995.
A homemaker, Mrs. Hutman also worked as a secretary for the superintendent of schools at Elkhart. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, sewing, gardening and canning. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Elkhart and Order of the Eastern Star.
Her husband died Sept. 30, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Billy Russell; and a sister, Rita McNutt.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Bradfield, Garden City, and Terry Goodall, Moore, Okla.; three brothers, Glen Russell, El Paso, Harold Russell, Port Arthur, Texas, and Darold Russell, Lampe, Mo.; a sister, Nora Beth Martin, Las Cruces; and three grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Janet Hernandez officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Mabel E. Jackson
Mabel E. Jackson, 92, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at her home in Finney County.
She was born Dec. 31, 1909, at Garden City, the daughter of George H. and Martha M. (Gingrich) Button. After spending her early years in Beaver County, Okla., and in Copeland, she graduated from high school at Knowles, Okla.
A Finney County resident since 1936, she was a homemaker on the family farm. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and reading.
Mrs. Jackson was a member of Church of the Brethren of Garden City and the women's fellowship group of the church. She also belonged to the Finney County Historical Society and the Senior Center of Finney County.
On Dec. 26, 1936, she married Alvin L. Jackson at Buffalo, Okla. He died July 6, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, George E. Button; and a sister, Florence Nelson.
She is survived by three sons, Lowell Jackson, Omaha, Neb., Merle Jackson, Valentine, Neb., and Stanley Jackson, Garden City; a daughter, Barbara Thompson, Garden City; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with Joe Johns officiating.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Church of the Brethren, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Harold D. Unruh
HOLCOMB - A service of remembrance for former Holcomb resident Harold D. Unruh, 67, of Ottawa, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Ottawa, with the Revs. Kent Mathews and Henry A. Roberts Jr. officiating. Cremation has taken place.
Mr. Unruh died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa.
He was born Aug. 27, 1934, at Fayetteville, Ark., the son of Dave and Irene Unruh. He grew up on a farm near Holcomb and attended schools in Holcomb, graduating from Holcomb High School in 1952. After graduating from high school, he served in the U.S. Army for four years.
He moved to Emporia where he attended Emporia State University, graduating with a business degree in 1964. During this time, he also worked for Penny's Ready Mix in Emporia, from 1960 until 1972. He moved to Ottawa in 1972 and managed the Penny's Ready Mix Plant until purchasing the business in 1976 from the Penny family. He owned and operated the business until selling it and retiring in April 1990. After his retirement, he enjoyed a variety of interests and hobbies, but especially loved his farm and taking care of his cattle, horses and other animals.
Mr. Unruh was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ottawa where he was also an elder. He was an active member of the Ottawa community throughout his lifetime having received the Dedicated Service Award from the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce for 1980 to 1982. He served as the chamber of commerce president from 1985 to 1986, was instrumental in forming the Leadership Program with the chamber of commerce, was a former member of Ottawa Franklin County Economic Development and received the Ottawa Jaycees Community Service Award for 1988 to 1989.
On Jan. 15, 1985, he married Sherril DeVore at Ottawa. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Gregory Unruh, Lawrence; a daughter, Melanie Bays, Littleton, Colo.; his parents, Greensburg; a brother, David Unruh, Bethel, Alaska; two sisters, Virginia Warner, Georgetown, Ky., and Marjorie Coulter, Mountain Park, Okla.; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Maxine C. Wixson
Maxine C. Wixson, 73, a former Garden City resident, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002.
She was born in Glen Dean, Ky.
Mrs. Wixson had moved to central Florida in 1991 and retired as vice president of Maxine's Jewelry. She resided at Cherokee Court in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
She was a member of Killarney Baptist Church in Winter Park, Fla., and a member and past president of Women in Construction.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Penny Codding of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; three sons, Robert M. Wixson Jr., Monticello, Ky., Joseph M. Wixson and David E. Wixson, both of Altamonte Springs; two sisters, Jo Ann Ash and Bobbie Jean Able, both of Owensboro, Ky.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

James T. Cathcart
LEOTI - Memorial service for James T. Cathcart, 67, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Just officiating
Mr. Cathcart died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Wichita County Long Term Care Unit.
He was born Jan. 18, 1935, at Pueblo, Colo., the son of Paul and Mary L. (Clark) Cathcart.
A mechanic, he had been a Leoti resident since 1976, moving from Pueblo.
On July 30, 1976, he married Earlene Hayes at Pueblo. She survives. He is also survived by four daughters, Gale Davis, Pueblo, Virginia Cathcart, Leoti, Cathy Paulk, Amarillo, Texas, and Tonya Ford, Sharon Springs; his mother, Leoti; a brother, Ernie Cathcart, Pueblo; and eight grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. Memorials to the James Cathcart Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti.
