JoEllen M. Powers
ULYSSES - JoEllen M. Powers, 56, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.
She was born Aug. 16, 1945, at San Diego, the daughter of Lyle Richard and Marjorie Helen (Heyer) Janes.
A Ulysses resident since April 2000, moving from West Liberty, Iowa, she was a homemaker. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church and Methodist Women, both at Ulysses, was a Den mother for Cub Scouts and taught Sunday School.
On July 12, 1965, she married William T. Powers at Glynco, Ga. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, William Tate Powers, Sugarland, Texas, and Douglas Edward Powers, Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Jana Marie Hedlund, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her mother, Florence, Ky.; two brothers, Richard Janes, Sanoma, Calif., and Robert Lyle Janes, Florence; a sister, Cheryl Ann Kammerman, Sumter, S.C; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Max Clayton officiating.

Ida F. Malchow
SCOTT CITY - Ida F. Malchow, 63, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born June 28, 1938, at Shallow Water, the daughter of Roy and Frances (Erskin) Malchow.
A lifetime resident of Scott City, she was a truck driver for Ramsey Hauling.
She is survived by a son, Jim Wilcoxson, Scott City; two granddaughters; two brothers, Ernest and Gene Malchow, and a sister, Ada Long, all of Lewiston, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Pete Malchow.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Park Lane Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home.
John L. Doris Jr.
SATANTA - John L. Doris Jr., 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Satanta District Hospital.
He was born Aug. 9, 1932, at Dighton, the son of John L. Sr. and Opal M. (Lawrence) Doris. The family moved to Granda, Colo., in 1944 when he was 12. He graduated from Granda High School in 1951.
On May 22, 1956, he married Virginia J. McKinnis at Granda. After their marriage, they moved to Buena Vista, Colo., and he worked as a miner at Climax, Colo. In 1962, they moved to Satanta. He was employed by Ungles Brothers, Dale Blair and Sunbelt Feeders and was an active partner on The Doris Farms.
Mr. Doris was a member of the United Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 276, both at Satanta, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict from 1952 to 1954. He supported Haskell County 4-H and Satanta sports, and always attended his grandchildren's and friends' activities.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Sig and Bob Doris, both of Satanta; a son-in-law; a brother, Jerry Doris, Burlington, Colo.; a sister, Cheryl Frickel, Hampton, Neb.; four grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Brenda Lou Sherffius; a brother, Lyle Doris; and a sister, Natalie Carr.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Jeff Miller officiating. Military services will be conducted at the church. Inurnment will take place later.
Friends may sign the register from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to Haskell County 4-H and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
Clyde C. Simon
Vigil service and rosary for Clyde C. Simon, 67, will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Simon died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 6, 1934, at Garden City, the son of Roman Joseph and Josephine Marie (Heimerman) Simon. He grew up in Garden City, attended St. Mary Catholic School and later attended St. Joseph's Seminary High School and St. Joseph's College in Illinois.
He then moved back to Garden City before serving in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1959 to 1976. While in the service, he served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. After the service, he returned to Garden City. He attended St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City and later taught at St. Mary Catholic School in Garden City from 1979 to 1985. He then worked as an emergency medical technician and later as a registered nurse at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, retiring in 2001.
Mr. Simon was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus No. 2795, taught CCD classes and was involved in adult education at the church, was involved in R.E.A.C.H. and the Comfort Zone Kids Camp, and volunteered for the Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, computers, woodworking and fishing.
On June 8, 1962, he married Ruby L. Cleveland at Corpus Christi, Texas. He married Vi Turnbull on Dec. 28, 1987, at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Bryan M. Simon, Okinawa, Japan, Michael H. Simon and Roman J. Simon, both of Garden City; three daughters, Donna L. Jacobs and Shirley M. Creeden, both of Garden City, and Shelly J. Heintzelman, Greeley, Colo.; three stepsons, Steven Kornelson, Atlanta, Kenneth Kornelson, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Marvin Kornelson, Denver; four brothers, Marvin Simon of Lawrence, Tom Simon, Garden City, Gerald Simon, Las Vegas, and Harlan Simon, Los Angeles; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Darvey Lee Simon; and three grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary Catholic Church or St. Mary School Endowment Fund, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Dale A. Donecker
HEALY - Funeral for Dale A. Donecker, 79, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Healy, with the Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Burial will be in Healy Cemetery.
Mr. Donecker died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born July 5, 1922, in Gove County, the son of Harry Carl and Goldie (Belville) Donecker.
A lifetime resident of Healy, he had worked at the Healy Co-op for 33 years and was a farmer. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Healy and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in Italy in the 10th Mountain Division.
On Dec. 24, 1943, he married Edith L. Russell at Scott City. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Terry D. Donecker, Healy, James M. Donecker, Wichita, and David L. Donecker, Garden City; three daughters, Lorraine Sue Roger, Scott City, Jana Gardner, Arkansas City, and Tammy Kniffin, Argyle, Texas; two brothers, Lewis H. Donecker, Great Bend, and Donald H. Donecker, Claflin; a sister, Ruth E. Dubbs, Security, Colo.; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jimmy; and a sister, Ruby Bumgardner.

Charles L. "Charlie" Barnett
Charles L. "Charlie" Barnett, 48, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at his home in Garden City.
He was born June 6, 1953, at Garden City, the son of C.L. "Barney" and Leona (Brown) Barnett.
A lifetime resident of Garden City, he was a farmer. He was a deacon of Bible Christian Church, a member of the men's quartet and of the choir, belonged to the Finney County Extension Board and was a former member of the Elks Lodge, all at Garden City. He enjoyed KU basketball, hunting, performing with local theater groups and participating in family activities.
On Nov. 12, 1977, he married Barbara Drew at Estes Park, Colo. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Dylan Drew Barnett of the home; two daughters, Sasha Nicole Barnett, Lawrence, and Kali Rachelle Barnett of the home; and two sisters, Sandra Bailey, Chandler, Okla., and Janet Green, Conifer, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bible Christian Church, Garden City, with the Revs. Jeff Starkey and Mark Ingmire officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Children's Education Fund, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Mildred Conine
SCOTT CITY - Mildred Conine, 93, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born Aug. 27, 1908, in Scott County, the daughter of Albert Asberry and Irma (Collins) French.
A lifetime resident of Scott City, she was a teacher from 1934 to 1948, served as county superintendent of schools from 1948 to 1962, and was county treasurer from 1962 to 1970.
Mrs. Conine was a member of the United Methodist Church of Scott City and was a founding member of the Manning Jayhawkers 4-H Club.
On June 1, 1934, she married Paul Henry Conine at Liberal. He died Aug. 27, 1943, in Scott County. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include a son, Merlin Conine, El Dorado; two daughters, Shirley Moynihan, Concordia, and Janice Stockwell, Arvada, Colo.; two sisters, LaVerne McClellan, Scott City, and Aileen Ross, Denver; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
