Dorothy Drennan
Dorothy Drennan, 78, died of cancer Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at her home in Hemet, Calif.
She was born Oct. 25, 1923, at Larned and grew up in southwest Kansas.
Mrs. Drennan had lived in Hemet for 17 years. She was a member of the Good Sam Club.
She is survived by two sons, Ron Drennan, Fullerton, Calif., and Fred Drennan, Ojai, Calif.; two sisters, Margaret Egbert, Garden City, and Joan Kemmel, Colorado; and three grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday in Riverside (Calif.) National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Ramona Hospice or the donor's choice, both in care of Harford Funeral Home, 120 N. Buena Vista St., Hemet, CA 92543.
Archie R. Gann
Archie R. Gann, 64, a former area resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at his home in Guymon, Okla.
He was born May 31, 1937, at Amarillo, Texas, the son of Virgil Riley and Leona (Burns) Gann.
Mr. Gann lived in various places, including Lakin and Garden City, and had recently moved to Guymon. He operated Archie Gann Trucking Co. and enjoyed spending time on the road.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Garden City and the National Rifle Association, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by three sons, Virgil Gann II, Gaylord, Mich., Jeff Gann, Mount Morris, Mich., and David Gann, Clio, Mich.; two daughters, Lisa Waterman, Lennon, Mich., and Samantha Rodriguez, Garden City; a brother, Virgil Eugene Gann of the Philippines; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with Chaplain Shannon Borchert officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted.
There will be no visitation.
Cleo B. Trent
ULYSSES - Cleo B. Trent, 95, of Dodge City and formerly of Ulysses, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Via Christi Riverside Hospital in Wichita.
She was born Nov. 26, 1906, at Sylvia, the daughter of George William and Ellen Allison Schwein. She attended Salt City Business College at Hutchinson.
A longtime resident of Dodge City, formerly of Ulysses, she was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church of Dodge City.
On Sept. 9, 1926, she married C. Otis Trent at Sylvia. He died Aug. 19, 1995.
She is survived by a son, Jack Trent, Wichita; a brother, Rex Schwein, Harlingen, Texas; two sisters, June Flummerfelt, Rogers, Ark., and Joan Lewis, Ulysses; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Greencrest Cemetery, Dodge City, with Charlie Greer officiating.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church of Dodge City, in care of Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.
Rose Ann Nasetka
Rosary for Rose Ann Nasetka, 81, of Garden City, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Ingalls, followed by the funeral at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. Burial is scheduled for Friday in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo, Pa.
Mrs. Nasetka died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at her home.
She was born April 26, 1920, at Apollo, the daughter of Andrew Marangoni and Paulina Della Pegorara.
A self-employed housekeeper for many years, she moved to Dodge City in 1996 and to Garden City two years ago. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Apollo.
In 1939, she married Robert Cagna. He died in 1941. She married Domenick Zanotti in 1948. He died in 1950. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Nasetka, in 1979; two brothers, Gusto and Geno; and a sister, Jenny.
Survivors include a son, Sam Cagna, Cimarron; a sister, Olga Ross, Florence, Ala.; a grandson; two granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 tonight at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.
Niclas O. "Nick" Zapata
Evening service for Niclas O. "Nick" Zapata, 61, will be 6 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana de Garden City, with the Rev. Richard Perez officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Zapata died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born Dec. 16, 1939, at Vernon, Texas, the son of Remijio and Petra (Ortiz) Zapata.
Mr. Zapata had worked as a migrant worker before being employed as an assembly lineman for American Motor Corp. for three years in Wisconsin. He moved from Wisconsin to Garden City in 1978 and worked as a groundskeeper at St. Catherine Hospital.
He was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana de Garden City and was deacon for 17 years. His hobbies included writing songs, singing, playing the accordion, fishing, and spending time with his family and his church.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Zapata, of the home; four sons, Nick Zapata Jr. and Noel Zapata, both of Kenosha, Wis., Nathan and Nathaniel Zapata, both of Garden City; three daughters, Carolina Zapata and Lorina Hinojos, both of Garden City, and Marina Zapata, Kenosha; five brothers, Anastacio Zapata, Campbellton, Texas, Pablo Zapata, Hollis, Okla., Sammy Zapata, Hale Center, Texas, Refugio Zapata, Altos, Okla., and Biviano Zapata, Garden City; five sisters, Alfonsa Vargas of Hollis, Pabla Guerrero and Mary Elena Rosales, both of Lakin, Geneva Soza, Chickasha, Okla., and Petra Gutierrez, Lubbock, Texas; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Niclas O. Zapata Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Garry Williams
Funeral for Garry Williams, 72, for whom Garden City Community College's Williams Stadium is named, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Christian Church, Kokomo, Ind., with the Rev. Scott Keehn officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Kokomo.
Mr. Williams, of Kokomo, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital & Health Center.
Born Nov. 25, 1929, at Chicago, he was the son of L.O. Bill and Esther G. (Garry) Williams. He graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1948. He received a bachelor's degree in 1952 from DePauw University, was a member of the university's Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and served on the DePauw Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1972 to 1976 and as secretary from 1973 to 1976.
Mr. Williams had worked since 1952 for B-W Manufacturing Co., Kokomo, a company founded in 1947 by his father. He retired as president and chief executive officer in April 1987. He was elected "Boss of the Year" in 1978 by the Kokomo Chapter of Professional Secretaries.
His recent memberships included First Congregational Christian Church, Kokomo Country Club, the board of directors of Key Bank, life member of Kokomo Elks Lodge No. 190, Howard Masonic Lodge No. 93, Kokomo Shrine Club, Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Temple of Indianapolis, St. Joseph Hospital & Health Center Advisory Board where he served as president and on the audit board, and the IU-K Advisory Board.
Other memberships included serving on the board of directors of the YMCA where he served on the executive committee, Foundation Board of IU-K, Athletic Task Force at IU-K, The American Quarter Horse Association (owning World Champion Youth Quarter Horses), Junior Achievement board of directors, Kokomo Rotary Club, Y's Men's Club and the Kokomo-Howard County Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of the YMCA Church Basketball League where he had been president for two years, director for five years and coach for six years, Kokomo Babe Ruth Baseball League where he served as president for four years, director for 13 years, team manager for six years and was a team sponsor, Indiana State Babe Ruth League serving as district director for 16 years, Recreational Vehicle Industry of America, Underwriters' Laboratories Inc. Advisory Council, Kokomo Wildkat Club, Spirit Committee, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
He helped establish the Kokomo Babe Ruth League in 1954 and obtained land for the diamond from the city, then led the drive to build the field in 1955, and later helped in the rebuilding in 1972. He brought the Babe Ruth State Championship Tournament to Kokomo in 1965, and established five new leagues during his tenure as district director. He established a basketball program for the youth of First Congregational Church in 1969 and was president of the Kokomo Church Association YMCA Basketball League.
He took part in rebuilding the image of Kokomo High School during the era of two area high schools. He worked with Haworth High School from 1969 through 1973 to establish its sports program, underwriting the expense of fencing the football field and helping set up a source of funds for sports programs.
He announced high school boys' swim meets and sectional swim championships for 10 years, helped establish the Kokomo High School Teachers' Foundation, and was instrumental in obtaining funds for the YMCA building campaign and St. Joseph Hospital & Health Center's expansion program. Her served on the personnel, executive and development committees of the YMCA from 1982 through 1988.
His philanthropic activities included the IU-K Library of which he was a major contributor and the indoor practice facility at the Russiaville Cubs Field. Two colleges benefited from his generosity - Garden City Community College and Texas Christian University. He was inducted into the Garden City Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 1993, and its state-of-the-art baseball field was named Williams Stadium in 1989. He was a founder and member of the Texas Christian University Steering Committee to build a new baseball stadium with expected completion in 2002 and the press box being named in his honor. He was also an honorary alum and letterman of Texas Christian University.
On Jan. 4, 1952, he married Janet L. Lewis at Paris, Ky. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Steve Williams, Tucson, Ariz., Daniel Williams, Bunker Hill, and Lewis G. Williams, Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Debra J. Williams, Kokomo; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Jane Shenk, Mesa, Ariz.
Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 tonight at Fenn & Shirley Mortuary, Kokomo, and at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the St. Joseph Foundation of St. Joseph Hospital & Health Center in Kokomo, or the American Cancer Society, Howard County Chapter, both in care of the mortuary, or to the donor's choice.
