Bernard H. Knoeber
CIMARRON - Vigil service for Bernard H. Knoeber, 88, of Spearville, was 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Spearville. Funeral Mass was to be 10:30 this morning at the church, with the Rev. John Maes officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Spearville.
Mr. Knoeber died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Western Plains Regional Hospital in Dodge City.
He was born Sept. 7, 1913, at Spearville, the son of Henry M. and Anna (Klenke) Knoeber. He graduated from Spearville High School.
A lifelong resident of Spearville, he was the owner and operator of the Spearville Mercantile Store. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at Spearville and St. Leonard Council Knights of Columbus No. 1539, and a charter member of the Spearville Lions Club.
On Sept. 23, 1940, he married Zelma Hornung at Windthorst. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Mark, Parkville, Mo., and Steve, Spearville; four daughters, Donna Pointelin, Cape Coral, Fla., Jane Thomas, Cimarron, Lea Herrman, Dodge City, and Mae Clark, Glen Ellyn, Ill.; a sister, Louise Hornung, Spearville; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.
Burnaham D. "Bud" Sloderbeck
Funeral for Burnaham D. "Bud" Sloderbeck, 84, of Upland, Ind., will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jones-Smith Funeral Home, Upland, with the Rev. Tom Mansberger officiating. Burial will be in Estates of Serenity Cemetery, Marion, Ind.
Mr. Sloderbeck died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at the University Health Care Center.
He was born June 11, 1917, at Marion, the son of Fred and Dessie (Lewis) Sloderbeck. He graduated from Van Buren High School in 1935.
Mr. Sloderbeck had been a farmer in Grant County for more than 50 years and operated Sloderbeck Apple Orchard for 20 years, prior to his retirement in 1992. Most of his life was spent in Monroe Township.
He was a member of the Grant County Beef Breeders Association for many years and attended the Indiana State Fair for more than 50 years. He enjoyed roller skating for many years and attended the opening of the Idyl Wild Skating Rink.
On Dec. 23, 1944, he married Liz Lightle at Upland. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Phillip Sloderbeck, Garden City; a sister, Alice Troutt, rural Marion; two granddaughters; a brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen Trees.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home, Box 73, Upland, IN 46989.
Victor L. "Vic" Turner
HUGOTON - Memorial service for Victor L. "Vic" Turner, 78, of Hugoton, was 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Chapel, Liberal. Dr. John Loucks officiated and Masonic rites were conducted by Fargo Lodge No. 300.
Mr. Turner died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.
He was born Jan. 19, 1923, at Madison, the son of William J. and Bertha L. (Cassingham) Turner. After graduating from Madison High School, he worked at Ford Motor Co. as a parts man and then completed Barber School at Omaha, Neb.
A Hugoton resident since 2000, moving from Liberal, he owned and operated Vic's Barber Shop at Liberal and barbered for 45 years, retiring in 1998. He also was barber at the Liberal Good Samaritan Center for more than 20 years.
Mr. Turner was a member of First Christian Church, Fargo Lodge No. 300, Wichita Consistory, Scottish rite and Shrine, a life member of the American Legion and VFW Lane Day Post No. 3166, a former member of the Liberal Jaycees and the Noon Kiwanis Club, with perfect attendance for 20 years, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a signalman.
On Aug. 10, 1947, he married Lee Heckathorn at Wichita. She died Feb. 6, 1994. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Wayne Turner.
On Sept. 11, 1995, he married Bernetta J. Custer Nichols at Liberal. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Vicki Thornton, Emporia, Terri Easterday, Manhattan, and Cindi Meyer, Oklahoma City; a stepson, Preston Nichols, Liberal; a stepdaughter, Joyce Begley, Hugoton; two sisters, Roma Hale, Humboldt, and Evelyn Olson, Emporia; and 10 grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of Miller Mortuary, Liberal.
Carl E. McNaught
Funeral for Carl E. McNaught, 89, will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. McNaught died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 25, 1912, at Pratt, the son of Vern and Beulah (Ziegler) McNaught. He grew up in Byers and attended schools there.
In 1932, he moved to Syracuse, where he worked for Miracle Grocery Store. He moved to Garden City in 1938 to begin working for Nolan Motor Co. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After being injured in the service, he moved to San Francisco where he worked for Quaker Oats.
On May 18, 1946, he married Marian Morphett at LaGrange, Ill. They moved to Garden City after their marriage and he continued his work as a salesman at Nolan Motor Co., which later became Schreiber Motors, retiring in 1983.
Mr. McNaught enjoyed his work and also enjoyed gardening, bowling, watching football, traveling and visiting with people. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the American Legion.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard McNaught, Garden City; two daughters, Marsha Golay and Melinda Hitz, both of Garden City; a brother, Ray McNaught, Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; four sisters, Helen Parnel, Wichita, Hazel Hudak, Mesa, Ariz., Nellie Turner, Elmira, Ore., and Lois Dikeman, Syracuse; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bob and Floyd McNaught; a sister, Jewel Weisenthal; and a grandson, Darin Golay.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Darin Golay Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Presbyterian Church, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
John E. Rangel
Vigil service for John E. Rangel, 32, will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Rangel died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, in Wichita.
He was born Aug. 8, 1969, at Sublette, the son of Richard and Elvira (Arteaga) Rangel. He attended Satanta Grade School, graduated from Satanta High School and attended Garden City Community College for two years.
While living in Garden City, he worked at Gibson's, Wal-Mart and Southwest Developmental Services Inc., before moving to Wichita in 1999. He worked as a stocker for Dillons, was a member of the Catholic faith and volunteered to help AIDS patients.
He is survived by his parents, Garden City; five brothers, Paul, Great Bend, Pete and Ron, both of Tampa, Fla., David, Denver, and Danny, Wichita; a sister, Rose Allen, Garden City; and a stepbrother, Jerry Gonzales, Denver. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Rangel Jr.

Arthur L. Westeman
SYRACUSE - Funeral for Arthur L. Westeman, 68, of the Bear Creek community in Hamilton County, will be 1 p.m. MST Tuesday at the Coolidge High School Gym, Coolidge. A graveside committal service will follow in Bear Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Westeman died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born Aug. 31, 1933, at Syracuse, the son of Fredrick William and Bessie Orene (Smith) Westeman. He attended school for eight years in the Bear Creek Township in Hamilton County and went on to graduate from Coolidge High School in 1951.
On Feb. 4, 1958, he married Oma Jean Neal at Holly, Colo. She survives.
A lifetime resident of Hamilton County, he farmed corn, wheat and alfalfa. He and his wife raised their children on their rural Bear Creek homestead where the Westemans have lived for four generations.
Mr. Westeman was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the Bullet and Bow Gun Club of Hamilton County, a former member of the airport board and the Syracuse Co-op Board, a member of the Southwest Corvette Club of Liberal, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He enjoyed old cars and anything that was an antique or he could shoot. He had his private pilot's license and enjoyed planes and motorcycles. He was dedicated to the Bear Creek community and his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ed and Boyd Westeman, and a daughter, Brenda J. Westeman, all of the Bear Creek community; three brothers, Jerry Westeman, Wichita, Freddie Westeman, Syracuse, and Rodger Westeman of the Bear Creek community; two sisters, Orene Martin, Johnson City, and Arlene Kirby, Syracuse; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
