Naomi R. Freeman
Naomi R. Freeman, 52, a former Garden City resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at her home in Orlando, Fla.
She was born July 19, 1949, at Sterling, the daughter of Paul C. and Iris (Wolfe) Temple. When she was young, the family moved to various places throughout Kansas and the Midwest.
On June 3, 1967, she married James M. Freeman at Formosa. They lived in Mankato, Wichita, Ellis and Phillipsburg before moving to Garden City in 1974. While living in Garden City, Mrs. Freeman worked as a waitress at Coffee Anne and K-Bob's. In 2000, she and her husband moved to Orlando. She enjoyed garage sales and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Jim, Garden City, John, Searcy, Ark., and Jeff, West Jordon, Utah; two daughters, Janelle Staats and Jennifer Freeman, both of Garden City; her father, Jamesville, Iowa; a brother, Stephan Temple, Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Lorel Murray, Jamesville, and Sharon Coughlin, Olathe; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Garden Valley Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Steve Prieb officiating. A private family burial is planned for later in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Mary Thelma Smith
Johnson CITY - Mary Thelma Smith, 89, of Johnson City, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City.
She was born March 2, 1912, in Pendleton County, Ky., the daughter of Thomas and Mattie (Godman) Dunn.
A resident of Johnson City since 1951, she was a homemaker and belonged to the First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star Chapter No. 471, the Mothers Club and the Jolly Dozen, all at Johnson City. She enjoyed gardening and cooking.
On Dec. 9, 1931, she married Charles Arthur Smith at Bucklin. He died in October 1969. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, seven sisters and a great-grandson, Cody Jack Smith.
She is survived by four sons, Jack L. Smith, Lakewood, Calif., Norman Smith, Walsh, Colo., Ray Smith, Crossville, Tenn., and Curtis Smith, Meeker, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials are suggested to Stanton County Long Term Care Unit or the First United Methodist Church, both in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.
John L. Luckett
Funeral for John L. Luckett, 73, of Monroe, La., was 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church, Monroe, with the Rev. Reuben Oliver officiating.
Mr. Luckett, also known as "The Fisherman," died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001.
He was born June 22, 1928, to John and Annie (Butler) Luckett, in Rayville, La., and spent his early childhood years there before moving to Monroe.
Once in Monroe, he united with China Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. I.W. Watson, where he accepted the Lord as his savior and was baptized in the Ouachita River. Later, he united with Bethel Baptist Church, led by Reuben L. Oliver, pastor, where he served until his illness.
He attended Monroe Colored High School. Upon reaching the age of manhood, he volunteered his services to the U.S. Army, where he served for seven years and received an honorable discharge.
He was employed by Malone & Hyde, McClean Trucking Co., and Consolidated Freightways Inc., from which he retired in 1991.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jettie Mae Luckett; six children, Melvin Luckett, Frank Smith, Clifton "Lucky" Luckett of Garden City, Carolyn Rene Taylor, Gwendolyn Holmes and Frankie Luckett; a sister, Ruth Owens; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Miller Funeral Home in Monroe was in charge of arrangements.
Thelma A. Anderson
DIGHTON - Funeral for Thelma A. Anderson, 83, will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Mike Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Healy Cemetery.
Mrs. Anderson died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Showalter Villa in Hesston.
She was born Sept. 3, 1918, at Amy, Colo., the daughter of Warren Lee and Stella Myrtle (Speer) Gibbs. She lived in Amy until she was about 10 years old. After becoming orphaned, she moved to Dighton in 1928 to live with her sister, Mary and Mac McDaniel.
After graduating from Dighton High School in 1937, she moved to Norton where she was a telephone operator and played the piano in a dance band.
On Feb. 28, 1940, she married Bill Anderson at Norton. They lived in Norton for a year before moving to Dighton in 1941. During World War II, she worked as a telephone operator in Dighton. When her husband returned from the service, they moved to Healy. In 1962, they returned to Dighton. From 1967 to 1970, she worked at Murphy's Variety Store, then in the dietary department at Lane County Hospital until retiring in 1983. In 1996, they moved to Warsaw, Mo., and then to Hesston in 2001.
Mrs. Anderson was a member of First Christian Church of Dighton and a lifetime member of Rebekah Lodge of Healy. Her special interests were bowling, golfing, fishing, camping and her grandchildren's activities.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Myrna Hein and Bobbie Sue Barber, both of Hesston, and Sherry Laird, Shawnee; a sister, Beatrice Edwards, Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary McDaniel; and two brothers, Lee and Orville Gibbs.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or Russell Child Development Center, both in care of the funeral home.
Verna L. Jacobs
SYRACUSE - Funeral for Verna L. Jacobs, 82, of Harper, was to be 10:30 this morning at Elliott Funeral Home, Harper, with the Rev. Phil Morris officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Harper.
Mrs. Jacobs died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born May 31, 1919, in Harper County, the daughter of John O. and Maggie M. (Bickel) Bauer.
A homemaker, she was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church at Harper.
On Nov. 14, 1939, she married Keith Neal Jacobs at Harper. He died Dec. 9, 1993.
She is survived by two sons, Don, Wichita, and John, Kingman; three daughters, Phyllis Thompson, Wichita, Margaret Catlin, Attica, and Faye Frazer, Syracuse; a brother, Merle Bauer, Dallas; and a sister, Dorothy Kauffman, Phoenix.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Harper, in care of the funeral home.
Charles W. "Chas" Flood
SCOTT CITY - Charles W. "Chas" Flood, 84, of Newkirk, Okla., died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Ponca City, Okla.
A farmer, he was born March 5, 1917, at Blackwell, Okla., the son of Charles and Mary Ester (Davis) Flood. He graduated from Shallow Water High School in 1935.
On June 28, 1971, he married Patricia Faye Hannah Nelson at Bartlesville, Okla. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters; a stepson; a stepdaughter; a sister, Mary K. Chamberlain, Scott City; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Rev. Augustine J. Hanchak, C.PP.S.
The Rev. Augustine J. Hanchak, C.PP.S., 77, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at St. Charles Center, Carthagena, Ohio, following a possible stroke brought on by inner-cranial bleeding.
He was born July 29, 1924, at Cleveland, the son of Michael A. and Anna P. (Fenner) Hanchak.
Ordained to the priesthood on May 18, 1952, he served in various locations, including as parochial vicar at St. Mary parish in Garden City in 1963-64. In 1987 his health began to deteriorate and he was forced to take sick leave. In the following year he retired and took up residence in an apartment in Tucson, Ariz. In 1992, he moved to the St. Charles Center in Ohio.
He is survived by four brothers and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial was Nov. 26 at the St. Charles Center, with the Rev. Mark Miller officiating. Burial followed in the community cemetery.
