Twyla Mae Smith
LIBERAL - Twyla Mae Smith, 70, Liberal died Sunday Nov. 11, 2001 at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.
She was born July 20, 1931, at Liberal, the daughter of Curt and Agatha (Wiens) Vogt.
She grew up in Liberal and graduated from Liberal High School in 1949. She was a devoted wife and mother. She was a club leader of the Wide-A-Wake 4-H Club for more than 20 years.
She was a member of TOPS and the Multiple Sclerosis Support Group.
She married James "Fred" Smith on Dec. 5, 1952 in Clayton New Mex. He survives.
She is also survived by one son, Richard Smith, Tulsa, Okla., one daughter, Sandy Fine, Garden City, two sisters, Evelyn Waybright and Eleanor Arbuthnot, both of Liberal, one granddaughter, Mandy Fine and one great-granddaughter, Aspen Fine, both of Garden City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Miller Chapel, with Rev. Steven Prieb officiating. Interment will be in the Restlawn Memorial Garden.
Friends may call at the Miller Mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The family suggests memorials to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Wide-A-Wake 4-H Club, in care of the mortuary.
Doris Arlene Christian
ULYSSES - Doris Arlene Christian, 86, Augusta, and former Ulysses resident, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2001 at Lakepoint Nursing Home, Augusta, where she had been a resident for the last two years.
She was born April 18, 1915 in Turon, the daughter of Clarence and Ida (Book) Carter. When she was five years old she moved from Turon to Ulysses.
She and Everett William Christian were married Aug. 15, 1931 at Hugoton. He preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1987.
She worked as a nurse aid for 13 years at the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses. She was a former member of the United Methodist Church, Ulysses. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Augusta, and a charter member of the So & So Club, Ulysses.
Survivors include three sons, Everett W. Christian, Amarillo, Tex., C. Wayne Christian and his wife Nancy, Hays, Lynn O. Christian and his wife Earlene, Augusta, one daughter, Kay Wood, Phoenix, Ark., one sister-in-law, Alice Carter, Ulysses, 16 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Kenneth Eugene Christian on April 2, 1992, on brother, Glenn Carter, and one sister, Irene Wood.
Memorials have been established for either the Lakepoint Nursing Home, Augusta, or the American Cancer Fund. Memorials may be mailed to Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton presiding. Burial will follow in the Ulysses Cemetary.
Grant County Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Archie Peaster
MONTEZUMA - Archie Peaster, 82, of Montezuma, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.
He was born June 6, 1919, in Gray County, the son of Joseph and Susie (Becker) Peaster.
Mr. Peaster was a member of Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.
On Aug. 30, 1942, he married Esther Voth at Winton, Calif. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Larry Peaster, Clayton, Wis., and Dale Peaster, Okalona, Miss.; a daughter, Gloris Buller, Nettleton, Miss.; six brothers, Marvin Peaster, Brooksville, Miss., Glen Peaster, Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Leonard Peaster and Raymond Peaster, both of Winton, Homer Peaster, Atwood, Calif., and Joseph Peaster Jr., Merced, Calif.; two sisters, Dorothy Bolcoa, Atwater, Calif., and Grace Faddis, Maderia, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alvin Peaster.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Burial will be in North Mennonite Church Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc. at Montezuma, in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
Edward Carl Schmidt
HOLCOMB - Funeral for Edward Carl Schmidt, 85, of Chase, will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Community Presbyterian Church, Chase, with the Revs. Arlene and Jesse Patrick officiating. Burial will be in Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood.
Mr. Schmidt died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson.
He was born June 12, 1916, at Garfield, the son of Frederick and Lena (Brenn) Schmidt.
A longtime resident of Chase, he was an independent oil pumper, retiring in 1998.
He was a member of Community Presbyterian Church of Chase, serving as an elder and trustee of the church.
He also belonged to the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, both at Chase, was grand marshal of the Chase Day Parade in 2000 and was a retired volunteer fireman for the Chase Fire Department.
On July 6, 1938, he married Shirley Evelyn Sutton at Great Bend.
She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Curtis, Great Bend, and Douglas, Holcomb; four daughters, Martha Kassin, Branson, Mo., Margaret Snyder, Watertown, S.D., Debby Steffan and Denice Sledd, both of Chase; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Alvin, Frederick, Russell and Elmer.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Kimple Funeral Home, Ellinwood.
Memorials are suggested to First Responders of Chase or to the church, both in care of the funeral home.
Carlos F. Valenzuela
Carlos F. Valenzuela, 61, died of cancer Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, in Denver.
He was born Feb. 6, 1940, at Copeland and grew up in Garden City where he graduated from high school.
An addiction counselor, he attended Naropa University in Boulder, Colo., and took courses in the counseling field at other Denver area colleges, holding one of the state's highest certification ratings.
For 15 years, he served as a counselor at Denver's Alcohol Behavior Information (ABI) treatment center.
More recently, he had been associated as a counselor with Youthtrack.
As an artist, Mr. Valenzuela's artwork had been featured in four one-man shows and several group shows in Denver over the past five years.
He was married to Lillian Sheehy, a former Garden City resident now living in Boulder. They later divorced.
Survivors include a son, Victor Carlos, Denver; his father, Ignacio G. Valenzuela, Garden City; and five sisters, Ana Maria Valenzuela, Redwood City, Calif., Elvira Crocker and Consuelo Dean, both of Wichita, Hope Garcia, Houston, and Mary Esther Martinez, San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his mother, Josefina Mesa Valenzuela; four brothers, Al, Rudy, Victor Eugene and Francisco; and three sisters, Maria Isidra Valenzuela, Dora Ramos and Josephine Martinez.
Perry S. Totman
HUGOTON - Graveside memorial service for Perry S. Totman, 74, of Caney, was to be 10 a.m. Friday in Grandview Cemetery, Kaw City, Okla., with the Rev. Charles Richey officiating. Cremation has taken place.
Mr. Totman died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Caney Nursing Center.
He was the brother of Bemita Blackburn, Hugoton.
Graves Funeral Home, Caney, was in charge of arrangements.
