Francis Schmalzried Jr.

DIGHTON - Vigil service for Francis Schmalzried Jr., 68, will be 7 tonight at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dighton. Funeral Mass will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. David Kraus as celebrant. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Schmalzried died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.

He was born Jan. 15, 1933, at Dighton, the son of Dayton Francis and Selma M. (Uppendahl) Schmalzried.

A lifetime resident of Lane County, he worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation as the maintenance supervisor. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church and Boy Scouts of America, was a third- and fourth-degree member of Knights of Columbus, belonged to the Lions Club and was a longtime member of the Lane County Emergency Medical Technicians Service. He enjoyed fishing, bowling and his family activities.

On Nov. 30, 1963, he married Emilie Linden at Dighton. She survives. He is also survived by a son, John Schmalzried, Leavenworth; a daughter, Jacquelyn Olson, Dallas; three brothers, Edward Schmalzried, Dighton, Richard Schmalzried, Quinter, and Ronald Schmalzried, Topeka; a sister, Mary Wagner, Lincoln, Neb.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 6:30 tonight and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to Boy Scout Troop No. 90 or the Lane County Ambulance Fund, both in care of the funeral home.

Wanda Fern Jantz

MONTEZUMA - Funeral for Wanda Fern Jantz, 69, a former Montezuma resident, was to be 10:30 this morning at Fairview (Okla.) Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Hicks officiating. Burial was to be in Cedar Cemetery, Fairview.

Mrs. Jantz died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at her home in Fairview.

She was born Aug. 20, 1932, at Montezuma, the daughter of Jacob and Irma (Schmidt) Whitesell. She graduated from Montezuma High School and attended a nursing college in Washington.

A resident of Fairview since 1974, formerly of Hutchinson, Montezuma, San Diego and Bermington, Wash., she had worked as a dental assistant, a nurse and a private caregiver.

On May 26, 1955, she married Lloyd Jantz at Dodge City. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Terry, Mooreland, Okla.; a daughter, Toni Murphy, Sunnyvale, Calif.; her mother, Moundridge; two brothers, Frank, Halstead, and Vernon, Newton; four sisters, Margaret Boehs, Fairview, Ruby Koehn, Moundridge, Ruth Koehn, Halstead, and Sheryl Tinkler, Granby, Colo.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorials are suggested to Enid Hospice Circle of Love, in care of the funeral home.

Paul Daniel Ens

Paul Daniel Ens, 43, of McPherson, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in McPherson.

Born in Garden City on Sept. 1, 1958, he was the son of Daniel E. and Sarah (Harms) Ens.

A Garden City resident until he was 8, he then lived in Winfield until the early 1990s. He returned to Garden City and lived here until September 2000 when he moved to McPherson.

Mr. Ens attended Garden Valley Church with his family while living in Garden City. He enjoyed going to his day service and teasing his caregivers for whom he had a special attachment.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Sarah and Fred Friesen, Reedley, Calif.; two brothers, Tim Ens, Wichita, and Alvin Ens, Olathe; two nieces; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Chaplain Shannon Borchert will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Disability Supports, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Linda Jo Legg

CIMARRON - Funeral for Linda Jo Legg, 33, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Richard Deimund officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Mrs. Legg died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at her parent's home in Cimarron.

She was born May 5, 1968, at Topeka, the daughter of Delbert and Violet (Gardner) Pickle. She graduated from Cimarron High School in 1986, attended Dodge City Community College, and graduated from Phillips Junior College of Salt Lake City with a degree in computerized office administration.

A lifetime resident of Cimarron, she was a homemaker and belonged to First Baptist Church. She enjoyed many things in life, most of all, her children.

On Jan. 10, 1998, she married Clark Legg at Cimarron. He survives. She is also survived by her parents of Cimarron; a son, Clint G. Legg, and a daughter, Tiffany Pickle, both of Cimarron; and two stepdaughters, Cassie Legg and Amanda Legg, both of Garden City.

The casket will be closed but friends may sign the book from 5 to 8 tonight at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested in the children's names to First National Bank of Cimarron.

Geraldine Battin

Geraldine Battin, 85, of Woodland Park, Colo., died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs, Colo.

She was born Sept. 11, 1916, at Holcomb, the daughter of Roy and Sarah Ruth (Calhoun) Dearth. She grew up in Holcomb, graduating from Holcomb High School and attending one year at Garden City Junior College.

On Oct. 26, 1941, she married Merritt Battin at Las Vegas. In 1946, they moved to Scott County, living there until moving to Colorado in 1970. In 1978, they moved to Garden City. He died Oct. 12, 1978. She returned to Woodland Park in September 1995.

Mrs. Battin was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Garden City. A homemaker, she also enjoyed horseback riding, gardening and traveling.

She is survived by a son, Mel Battin, Woodland Park; two brothers, Johnnie Dearth, Wichita, and Doug Dearth, Woodland Park; a sister, Barbara Embry, Fort Collins, Colo.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Lois B. Davison

SATANTA - Funeral for Lois B. Davison, 94, of Satanta, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Satanta, with the Revs. Ray Tweed and Jeff Miller officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Mrs. Davison died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit where she had been a resident for four years.

She was born Oct. 13, 1907, at Burlington, the daughter of Solomon and Florence (Meade) Stuckey. She grew up on a farm near Pierceville and attended Banner School.

On July 12, 1942, she married Carl Otis Davison at Lakin. In August 1953, they opened a small repair shop and filling station, with a few food items. They later moved onto Main Street and started Davison Groceries, which they ran for 30 years. They then opened Uptown Cafe. She and her husband were also instrumental in helping to start the Satanta Happy Agers Site.

A homemaker, Mrs. Davison was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lakin and belonged to the Liberal Pancakers Camping Club until 1978.

Her husband died Aug. 5, 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Gordon Dale Davison; a daughter, Edith Ann Davison; a stepgrandson, Gary Lynn Ochs; three brothers, Ernest, Albert and Henry Stuckey; and three sisters, Clara Nelson, Pearl McKinley and Esther Rich.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Ann Burks, Satanta; a stepson, Donald Davison, Avon Park, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Kay Johnson, Avon Park, and Kathrine Miller, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Vernon Davison, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Opal Watson, Hamlin, Texas; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Happy Agers Site at Satanta or the Shriner Hospital for Crippled Children and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Lois Frances Ellis

SUBLETTE - Funeral for Lois Frances Ellis, 79, of Wenatckee, Wash., and formerly of Sublette, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Wenatckee. Burial will follow.

Mrs. Ellis died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in Wenatckee.

She was born in 1922 at Sublette, the daughter of Rollie and Susie (Snavely) Wright. She grew up in Sublette, graduating from Sublette High School.

For several years, she lived in Longmont, Colo., where she worked as a telephone operator. She later moved to Wenatckee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Ellis; a son, Mark Ellis; and her parents.

Survivors include three daughters, Shana, Sheryl and Connie Ellis; three stepchildren, Gene Ellis, Eddie Ellis and Barbara Ellis; two brothers, Merle and Oliver Wright, both of Sublette; and a sister, Eva Knox, Ozark, Ark.
