Lois H. Porter
DIGHTON - Funeral for Lois H. Porter, 82, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Dighton, with the Revs. Greg Savage, Carl Helm and Jay Stapleton officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery, Jetmore.
Mrs. Porter died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at her home in Dighton.
She was born Aug. 31, 1919, at Hanston, the daughter of August Henry and Fedelia Grace (Coker) Brown. She graduated from Hanston High School in 1940.
On July 21, 1940, she married Harry Samuel "Sam" Porter at St. John. They lived in Hanston for a short time before moving to Jetmore where they operated the Sinclair Filling Station for six years. In 1947, they moved to Dighton.
Mrs. Porter had worked as the supervising cook at Dighton Grade School for eight years, and had also worked at Murphy's Variety Store, Newsom's IGA and Smith's Frozen Foods, all at Dighton, and at Duckwall's in Garden City. After her retirement, she babysat for Roger and Judy Timken and for Joe and Vicki Hubin.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Dighton, and a former member of Amy Baptist Church, First Christian Church of Dighton and Bible Fellowship Church of Dighton.
Her husband died Feb. 22, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Pearl Seba and Alice Whitford; and two brothers, Robert and Henry Brown.
She is survived by a son, Sam Porter, Duncan, Okla.; a brother, Donald Brown, Freemont, Neb.; three sisters, Lola Mae Kichler, Woodland, Calif., Alma Witman, Garden City, and Wilma Ashton, Larned; five granddaughters; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or St. Catherine Hospice, both in care of the funeral home.
Paul D. Stoppel
Funeral for Paul D. Stoppel, 66, of Wilson, will be 4 p.m. today at Wilson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Elaine Lord officiating. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Wilson.
Mr. Stoppel died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Salina.
He was born Feb. 10, 1935, at Wilson, the son of Henry J. and Laura (Herbel) Stoppel.
A lifetime resident of Wilson, he was a custodian and farmer. He belonged to Wilson United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (Jacobs) Stoppel; two daughters, Cynthia Zielko, Dalhart, Texas, and Brenda Hadley, Garden City; a brother, Norman Stoppel of Lawrence; three grandsons; four stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandson.

Rev. Albert E. Smith
ULYSSES - The Rev. Albert E. Smith, 85, of Salina and formerly of Ulysses, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was born Nov. 6, 1916, at Vine Creek, the son of Arthur and Hattie Smith. He grew up on a farm near Vine Creek and graduated from high school at Longford in 1935.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving five battle stars in the European theater. After returning home in 1945, he went to Ulysses to do carpentry work.
Shortly after moving to Ulysses, he began attending a Baptist church. He then met Ruthe Hampton, whom he married on June 5, 1948. Together, they ministered throughout Kansas, Tennessee and Kentucky. He and his wife had a son and adopted their daughter in 1964 when she was 4.
After he was saved April 14, 1949, he felt called to preach. He received his pastoral education in Lexington, Ky., and then served as pastor of several congregations, beginning in 1950 and mostly in the western half of Kansas. He had been a Salina resident since 1991, moving from Chase.
His wife died Aug. 6, 1982. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Glen, Earl and Jay.
On July 13, 1983, he married Dorothy Wilson. They enjoyed their church ministry, serving in numerous churches and in volunteer mission work. She died Oct. 27, 1996.
Survivors include his son, Layne E. Smith, Hickory, N.C.; his daughter, Candyce Ann Kraft, Utica; six grandchildren; two brothers, Jack and Lewis Smith; and a sister, Reva Reed.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Celebration Baptist Church (formerly First Southern Baptist Church) at Ulysses, with Dr. Layne E. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to Webster Conference Center at Salina, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
Wilbur Curtis Koehn
MONTEZUMA - Wilbur Curtis Koehn, 83, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at his home in Montezuma.
He was born Feb. 12, 1918, at Sitka, the son of Jonathan J. and Fanny (Jantz) Koehn. He spent his early childhood years in the Copeland and Greensburg areas.
A Montezuma resident since the winter of 1941, moving from De Ridder, La., Mr. Koehn was a retired farmer. He was a member of Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.
On Sept. 27, 1942, he married Virginia Mae Dirks at Montezuma. She died Jan. 2, 1988. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, James, Leonard and Emerson Koehn; a sister, Bessie Koehn; and a son-in-law, Glen Smith.
On Dec. 7, 1990, he married Irene Wiens at Montezuma. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Howard and James Koehn, both of Copeland; two daughters, Elaine Smith and Twila Smith, both of Montezuma; three sisters, Marjorie Dirks, Montezuma, Pearl Loucks, Protection, and Modesta Giesbrecht, Clarksdale, Miss.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Charles Schmidt, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.

James Walter "Chuck" Adams
Graveside service and inurnment for James Walter "Chuck" Adams, 58, of Garden City, will be 10 a.m. Friday in Lakin Cemetery, with Chaplain Doug Williams officiating.
Mr. Adams died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Aug. 1, 1943, at Anthony, the son of James Charles and Veda Leraine (Law) Adams. He attended Anthony schools and graduated from Liberal High School.
A Garden City resident since 1962, moving from Liberal, he had worked for Western Alfalfa in Garden City for 20 years. His special interests were working on cars, fishing and being an inventor.
Survivors include a son, Donald Adams, and a stepdaughter, Tamarra Fisher, both of Fayetteville, Ark.; a stepgranddaughter; a stepgreat-granddaughter; two sisters, Lois Clay, Searcey, Ark., and Linda Kay Adams, Anthony; a nephew; three nieces; and five great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half brother, Steven Robert Adams.

Kenneth R. Waller
Funeral for Kenneth R. Waller, 72, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.
Mr. Waller died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born June 20, 1929, in the Plymell community in Finney County, the son of James Thomas and Iva Elvira (Arnold) Waller. He grew up in Plymell and attended Prairie Lawn Country School.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict from December 1950 to September 1954, serving on the USS Epping Forest (LSD-4).
Mr. Waller worked as a mailman with the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of First Christian Church, VFW and the National Association of Letter Carriers. He enjoyed drinking coffee with his friends, fishing, reading westerns, playing pool, woodworking, and especially enjoyed his time with family.
On Dec. 29, 1957, he married Wilma Scheideman at Clayton, N.M. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Wayne Waller, Larned, and Jim Waller, Newton; four daughters, Pamela Selby and Janet Ryan, both of Garden City, Rita Keim and Tina Fairbank, both of Holcomb; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters and one granddaughter.
