Maxine H. Engle
Maxine H. Engle, 88, a longtime resident of Abilene, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan.
She was born Nov. 15, 1912, at Melrose, N.M., the daughter of Charles E. and Mildred (Marshall) Hooper.
She grew up in Abilene, graduating from Abilene High School in 1930.
She attended Kansas State University and had been employed in the Alumni Department.
She had also worked for United Telephone Company and for Smith Barber and Beauty Supply.
She was an active member of First Christian Church where she was a longtime Sunday School teacher.
On July 22, 1934, she married Frank M. Engle.
Their entire married life was spent in Abilene.
He died July 13, 1998.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Mildred Shamis; and an infant sister, Marceline.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolee Hartenstein, Manhattan, and Maribeth Pippenger, Garden City; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara McKee, Wichita.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Abilene, with Virgil Eubanks officiating.
Burial will be in Abilene Cemetery.
Visitation is at Danner Funeral Home, Abilene, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to the Abilene First Christian Church or Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, both in care of the funeral home, Box 758, Abilene, KS 67410.
Harold L. Krey
ELKHART - Funeral for Harold L. Krey, 75, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Elkhart Church of the Nazarene.
Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery.
Mr. Krey died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Anderson Bluebonnet Acres in Stephenville, Texas.
He was born Nov. 13, 1925, at St. John, the son of Arcy and Myrtle (Boone) Krey.
On Nov. 25, 1965, he married Lois Barnett at Oklahoma City, Okla.
Survivors include a son, Arcy, Stephenville; two brothers, Wesley Krey, Amarillo, Texas, and Don Krey, Richfield; three sisters, Pat Crosswhite, Ness City, Phyllis Tull, Cleburne, Texas, and Virginia Sell, Stafford; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, three daughters and two brothers.
Memorials are suggested to Elkhart Church of the Nazarene, in care of Harrell Funeral Home, 514 Kansas Ave., Elkhart, KS 67950.
Garry Wayne Carpenter
Memorial service for Garry Wayne Carpenter, 47, will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Garden Valley Retirement Village's chapel, with the Rev. Ray Raley officiating.
Mr. Carpenter died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born June 30, 1954, at Kansas City, the son of Richard and Ileana Delores (Eaton) Carpenter.
He grew up in Garden City, graduating from Garden City High School in 1972.
Mr. Carpenter had formerly worked at the Finney County IBP plant.
He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Garden City.
In October 1983, he married Juanita Phillips at Garden City.
She died in September 1987.
He is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Rhodes, Rapid City, S.D., and Sarah Goddard, Albion, Mich.; his father, Kansas City; his stepfather, Jess Garrett, Garden City; two sisters, Suzan Toepke, Mandan, N.D., and Michelle Smith, Garden City; two stepbrothers, Jesse Garrett, Prundale, Calif., and Delbert Garrett, Boston; and seven grandchildren.
Memorials to the Garry Carpenter Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
The Thi Nguyen
Funeral for The Thi Nguyen, 53, was 4 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Francis Khoi Nguyen officiating.
Cremation was to follow the service, with a family burial taking place later in Vietnam.
She died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at her home in Garden City.
Born Sept. 5, 1948, in Vietnam, she was the daughter of Nam Van and Thao Thi Nguyen.
A Garden City resident since 1991, she worked at one time for Monfort. She enjoyed cooking and gardening.
In 1969 she married Michael Mai in Vietnam. He survives.
She is also survived by two sons, Dung Mai, Wichita, and Thomas Mai, Garden City; two daughters, Kristy Mai, Garden City, and Dung Ngoc Mai, Vietnam; her mother and a son-in-law, both of Vietnam; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and a brother.
Hugo Richard Kraus
Hugo Richard Kraus, 87, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Western Plains Regional Hospital in Dodge City.
He was born June 8, 1914, at Ost, the son of Joseph and Matilda (Young) Kraus.
A lifetime resident of the Ransom-Arnold communities, he was a farmer and stockman.
He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Order of the Fourth Degree and Knights of Columbus, all at Ransom.
On May, 16, 1939, he married Alice Hilmes at Ransom.
She died July 24, 1997.
He was also preceded in death by seven brothers, Albert, Earl, Ralph, Leo, Norbert, Florian and Cyril; and two sisters, Lena Hilmes and Josephine Ketzner.
Survivors include five sons, the Rev. David H. Kraus, Scott City, Michael, John and Patrick Kraus, all of Ransom, and Mark Kraus of Arnold; four daughters, Nancy Foust and Jeanette Flax, both of Ransom, Julie Kramer, Garden City, and Annette Lang, Solomon; a sister, Marcella Lutters, Ransom; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Parish vigil was 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at St. Aloysius Church, Ransom.
Funeral Mass was 10:30 a.m. Sept. 27 at the church, with the Most Rev. Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore, and the Revs. Gregory LeBlanc and David Kraus officiating.
Burial was in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Ransom.
Memorials are suggested to St. Aloysius Church, in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City.
Beverly O'Connell
Beverly O'Connell, 53, of Ames, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at University Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, from complications from a bone marrow transplant.
She was born Sept. 11, 1948, at Garden City, the daughter of Fritz and Betty (Martin) Schreibvogel.
She graduated from Deerfield High School in 1966 and earned a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University.
Mrs. O'Connell lived in Garden City until moving to Hudson, Wis., in 1979.
A resident of Ames since 1984, she had been employed as an information services specialist at McFarland Clinic.
She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and enjoyed her sons' athletic events, especially their Minor Hockey Association games.
On June 17, 1977, she married Brian O'Connell at Garden City.
He survives.
She is also survived by two sons, John and Micheil O'Connell, both of Ames; her parents, Lakin; and two sisters, Barbara Campbell, Garden City, and Joanne Perna, Fort Collins, Colo.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Ames, with the Rev. Terry Rassmussen officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with a scripture service beginning at 7:30 p.m.
