Fenton C. Whipple
DIGHTON - Fenton C. Whipple, 87, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Grisell Memorial Long Term Care in Ransom.
He was born Oct. 23, 1913, near Alexander, the son of Jacob Earl and Gertrude Marie (Schaben) Whipple. He attended a rural school south of Beeler and graduated from Beeler High School.
A truck driver, he hauled coal and cattle for six years before marrying Vera Brown on Nov. 24, 1937, at Dodge City. He was then a lifelong farmer-stockman in the Beeler and Alamota area, and also owned the Case dealership in Dighton for 10 years.
Mr. Whipple was a member of the United Methodist Church and Odd Fellows Lodge No. 286, both at Dighton, and was a longtime member of the Alamota School Board. His special interests were his family activities and fishing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Myrna San Miguel, Dodge City, and Kerry Lustick, Salina; a son, Jake Whipple, Dighton; six brothers, Clarence and Rex, both of Beeler, Jim, San Diego, Don, Denver, Tom, Chicago, and Paul, Fowler, Colo.; two sisters, Jennie Bates, Denver, and Laverne Handy, Eureka, Mont.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Bernice Whipple; a brother, Wayne Whipple; two sisters, Hazel Prose and Ruby Mather; and a stepbrother, Thayne Starner.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or Grisell Memorial Long Term Care, both in care of the funeral home.
Richard "Keith" Mangels
HUGOTON - Richard "Keith" Mangels, 68, of Hugoton, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born March 13, 1933, at Rolla, the son of Eli and Bertha Katherine (Nusser) Mangels.
A lifetime resident of the area, he was an instrument technician for the Bureau of Mines for the U.S. Government. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Elkhart and was a U.S. Army veteran. He enjoyed reading and spending time with his family, and was a talented repairman.
On Oct. 4, 1963, he married Patsy Ruth Cox at Guymon, Okla. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Tim and Trevor, both of Hugoton, and Tracy, Holcomb; a daughter, Teresa Hull, Richfield; a brother, Robert Mangels, Rolla; two sisters, Helen Mangels, Rolla, and Loeta Thomas, Dodge City; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Esther Harford and Pauline Brown.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Rolla Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary Stafford officiating.

Frank Albert Teeters
SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Frank Albert Teeters, 80, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mr. Teeters died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born March 4, 1921, at Hays, the son of Martin A. and Rachel (Deringer) Teeters.
A Scott City resident since 1947, moving from Monte Vista, Colo., he was a cowboy. He belonged to the United Methodist Church, American Legion and Oddfellows, all at Scott City, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
On Nov. 27, 1944, he married Edith D. Brown at Taos, N.M. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann Steffens, Pittsburg, and Kala Hillery, Garden City; a brother, Don Teeters, Miami, Okla.; three sisters, Mary Alice McGillivray, Dighton, Irma Smith, Blackfoot, Idaho, and Eva Smith, Scott City; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, two brothers and four sisters.

A.H. "Spud" Wells
ULYSSES - Funeral for A.H. "Spud" Wells, 80, was to be 4 p.m. today at Patterson Avenue Church of God, Ulysses, with the Rev. Timothy Warren officiating. Burial was to follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Mr. Wells died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at his home in Ulysses after a battle with cancer.
He was born July 29, 1921, at Bristow, Okla., the son of Benjamin T. and Ella Mae (Tripplett-Tudor) Wells.
A Ulysses resident since 1947, he retired from Dowell after working for 16 years and then was self-employed as an oil and gas field consultant. He was a member of Patterson Avenue Church of God and the Eagles Lodge of Garden City, and enjoyed building and finish carpentry work.
On July 2, 1946, he married Effie Lott at Coffeyville. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Ronald W. Wells and Garold T. Wells, both of Ulysses, and Marlon R. Wells, Tulsa, Okla.; three daughters, Twyla Watson, Irving, Texas, Shirley Weis, Lamar, Colo., and Sandra Hair Bentley, Phoenix; 13 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, T.J. Tudor, Arley Tudor and Euliss Tudor; and a sister, Ethel Campbell.

Charles A. "Charlie" Eakins
Rosary for Charles A. "Charlie" Eakins, 56, of Hays, will be 7 tonight at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, with the Rev. Donald Zimmerman officiating.
Mr. Eakins died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at his home.
He was born Feb. 9, 1945, at Topeka, the son of Charles S. and Marveen (First) Eakins. He graduated from Emporia High School, and attended Emporia State University and the University of Kansas.
Mr. Eakins was a Kansas Highway Patrolman and was stationed in Salina and Garden City before retiring on Feb. 17, 1995, and moving to Hays. He was the director of transportation for USD No. 489 in Hays.
In 1966, he married Vicky Naden at Emporia. They later divorced. On Sept. 5, 1981, he married Mary Ann McAfee at Topeka. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Harlingen, Texas; a son, Charles Tony Eakins, Salina; two daughters, Jennifer Ostrander, Lees Summit, Mo., and Erin Stein, Syracuse, N.Y.; two stepsons, Kyle Hitchcock, Brookfield, Wis., and Kerry Gage, Colwich; two stepdaughters, Kimberly Lietz, Las Vegas, and Kelly Bockman, Salina; a brother, Darwin Eakins, Lawrence; and 17 grandchildren.

Vera L. Ballard
Vera L. Ballard, 71, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at her home in South Hutchinson.
She was born Nov. 24, 1929, at Elkhart, the daughter of Murray and Ruby (Tabor) Mason. While growing up, she lived in several locations in Oklahoma and Kansas, attending school in Oklahoma and finishing her schooling in Garden City.
After marrying Irvin Earl Martin, she moved from Garden City and lived in Springfield, Colo., and Lamar, Colo., for 40 years. She later married Walden Ballard, who preceded her in death as did her parents; a daughter, Linda Sue Martin; and four brothers, Herb, L.J., Gene and R.B. Mason.
Mrs. Ballard had recently moved to South Hutchinson to be near her daughter. She had worked as a cleaning person at a motel in Springfield and at a nursing home. In Lamar, she worked as a janitor for the Lamar School District.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Lamar and Springfield. She enjoyed dancing and listening to her brother's band play music.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Martin, Liberal, and Donald Martin, Dodge City; a daughter, Carol Walker, South Hutchinson; four brothers, Cleo Mason, Farmington, N.M., Garland Mason, Carthage, Mo., Johnny Mason, Lakin, and Bob Mason, LaVeta, Colo.; three sisters, Lois Tyer, Shirley Fleming and Maxine Urena, all of Nevada, Mo.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice & Home Care Services of Hutchinson, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Jerry L. Torson
SUBLETTE - Funeral for Jerry L. Torson, 33, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Christian Church, Sublette, with the Rev. David Erwin officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.
Mr. Torson died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Sublette.
The son of Tony and Rose (Pfenninger) Torson, he was born Dec. 26, 1967, at Dighton. He graduated from Sublette High School in 1986.
Mr. Torson was a welder. He belonged to the National Rifle Association, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing pool.
He is survived by his parents, Sublette; two daughters, Shanya Torson and Jakayla Torson, both of Stratton, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Danielle Nelson, Stratton; a brother, Terry Torson, Atlanta; a sister, Jeanine Biera, Garden City; three nephews; his grandmother, Mary Alice McGillivary, Dighton; and his ex wife, Shari Torson, Stratton. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Ralph Pfenninger and Vernon Torson; and his grandmother, Alice Dicus.
