Maudene Corbett
LAKIN - Memorial service for Maudene Corbett, 75, will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin, with the Rev. Warren Hett and Rita Stockton officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mrs. Corbett died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
She was born July 25, 1926, at Bethany, Mo., the daughter of Vern Clair Wright and Frances "Fannie" Laney Wright Hobbs. The family moved to Mt. Mariah, Mo., when she was 3, and to Coffeyville in April 1929, where they lived until she was 15. They moved to Lakin in 1941 and she graduated from Lakin High School in 1945.
While in high school, she worked for Parker Electric. She then went to Omaha, Neb., where she attended school studying to be an insurance underwriter. She moved to Denver in 1947 and worked for an insurance company. In 1959, she returned to Lakin to care for her ailing mother.
In 1960, she married Alvin A. "Shorty" Michel. He died in October 1962. In 1965, she married Fred S. Corbett.
Mrs. Corbett worked for many years at the Kearny County Court House for the Extension agent, at the Kearny County Sheriff's Office as a dispatcher, the Magistrate Judge Pro-Tem and the Kearny County Clerk. She also worked for Ethel McCormick, was a secretary for Tom Wright III and had last worked as office manager for Timothy N. Hagemann Appraisal Service.
She was a member of Chapter 244 Order of the Eastern Star, was Democratic precinct committee person for years and was campaign treasurer for Sen. LeRoy Hayden, and belonged to the VFW Auxiliary, Lakin. She enjoyed word puzzles, looking at pictures, shopping, golf, watching the Weather Channel, visiting with friends and family about current events, and was an avid Denver Broncos fan from the time of their inception.
She is survived by a daughter, Sheri Gay Graham, Lakin; a granddaughter; a sister, Jerrie Frances Flaugher, Chapel Hill, N.C.; a brother, Robert Dale Wright, Cleveland, Miss.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, including Florine Vincent of Lakin. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William Edward Wright.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Kearny County Home Health, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
Arthur C. Cox
SCOTT CITY - Arthur C. Cox, 84, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born Oct. 2, 1917, at Kansas City, the son of Arthur Benjamin and Daphne Judith (Glynn) Cox.
After graduating from Atchison Community High School in 1936, he moved to Scott City in 1937. He worked for Western Hardware & Supply for 15 years and for Bryan's Hardware for 17 years before retiring.
Mr. Cox was a member of First Christian Church and was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II.
On Oct. 26, 1943, he married Vera Evelyn Coker at Scott City. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, David Cox, Wichita, Donald Cox, Amarillo, Texas, and Paul Cox, Hoop, Utah; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.
Anna Marie Kraus
Anna Marie Kraus, 88, of Roseburg, Ore., died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at a Roseburg hospital.
She was born Feb. 13, 1913, at Ellis, the daughter of Bruce and Ella (Yegge) Wandling. She grew up and attended school in western Kansas. After attending formal school, she taught in Kansas for several years.
On Oct. 26, 1933, she married Ralph Kraus at Ransom. For many years they lived in Garden City, where they raised their family. Following retirement in the mid-1970s, they moved to Roseburg.
Over the years, Mrs. Kraus volunteered with the Red Cross, was active in the Catholic Church and was an ombudsman with the State of Oregon. In recent years, she enjoyed sharing time and playing cards with the pinochle group.
She is survived by her children, Roberta and Bob Ryan, Roseburg, Ed and Sharon Kraus, Redmond, Wash., Dan and Kathy Kraus, Garden City, and Jim and Debbie Kraus, Carmichael, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Gloria Kraus, Squim, Wash.; a sister, Lucille Oglesby, Roseburg; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1983; a son, Rodney Kraus; a sister, Irene Busenbark; and a brother, Bob Wandling.
Private cremation has taken place with inurnment to be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to any of the programs with Mercy Medical Center, 2700 Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, OR 97470.
Wilson Chapel, Roseburg, was in charge of arrangements.
Lorene T. Southern
Vigil service for Lorene T. Southern, 86, will be 7 tonight at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Southern died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at her home in Garden City.
She was born Dec. 2, 1914, at Garden City, the daughter of John B. and Georgeana (Cyrier) Lagesse.
A lifetime resident of Garden City, she had worked for many years as a proof reader with The Garden City Telegram and had been a volunteer at St. Catherine Hospital after her retirement. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and had worked in aviation during World War II.
On Jan. 18, 1949, she married Presley Rush Southern at Alva, Okla. He died in July 1960. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tonenia Huckins; two brothers, Ralph and Don; and three sisters, Ramona, Arila and Jackie.
She is survived by four sons, Donald Smioly, Leavenworth, John Southern, Decatur, Ga., Daryl Huckins and Eddie Southern, both of Garden City; a daughter, Georgeana Bauer, Hutchinson; three sisters, Avonne "Bonnie" Fox, Elmhurst, Ill., Alix Hering, Ness City, and Avril Craig, Garden City; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 5 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Belles of St. Catherine, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Calvin A. Mills
Calvin A. Mills, 76, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Haskell County, the son of William J. and Myrtle (Hummer) Mills.
A Garden City resident since 1932, moving from Haskell County, he had been an appliance technician for the Sears and Roebuck company for 34 years.
Mr. Mills was a member of Church of the Brethren and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
On Sept. 23, 1943, he married Colleen Glaze at Lakin. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, William Mills, Arvada, Colo., Ronald Mills, Friend, and David Mills, Gastonia, N.C.; two daughters, Connie McMillen, Great Bend, and Janell Mills, Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Raymond Mills, Denver; four sisters, Ruby Barker, Elva Farr and Iva Woodard, all of Garden City, and Vera Blansett, Holcomb; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Brethren, Garden City, with the Rev. Gary Meeks officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Alzheimer's Association, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Clara Oma Gould
SYRACUSE - Clara Oma Gould, 87, of Syracuse, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born March 18, 1914, in rural Stanton County, the daughter of William Henry and Nancy Ann (Rorick) Ward. She attended school in Johnson City and Manter.
A Syracuse resident since 1932, she worked at Gould Grocery Store for 10 years, and then assisted her daughter and grandson with their contracting business, The Hub in Syracuse. She resided in her own home until moving into her daughter's home in Syracuse in 1993.
Mrs. Gould was a member of First Christian Church and a former member of Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and spending time with her family.
On Dec. 12, 1931, she married Moulton Ray Gould at Hugoton. He died April 13, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Viola Ellwood; and a son-in-law, Lester Smith.
Survivors include a son, Dennis Ray Gould, Syracuse; a daughter, Wanda Maeann Smith, Syracuse; a sister, Mildred Hanes, Marsing, Idaho; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. MDT Thursday at First Christian Church, Syracuse, with the Revs. Joe Lee Gould and Mike Lewis officiating. Graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.
