Dennis Lee "Big D" Gordon
Dennis Lee "Big D" Gordon, 31, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 4, 1970, at Garden City, the son of Dannie Dwight Sr. and Gloria Rose Lee (Allen) Gordon. He attended Garden City schools.
Mr. Gordon worked in a packing plant, in construction and then with an oil field casing crew. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and watching the Pittsburg Steelers football team.
Survivors include his fiancee, Jill Villanueva, Garden City; a son, Clayton Brooks Gordon, of the home; his father and stepmother, Dannie and Gail Gordon, Hooker, Okla.; his mother and stepfather, Jim and Gloria Rhodig, Wichita; a brother, Dannie Gordon Jr., Wichita Falls, Texas; a sister, Gia Marie Ortiz, Garden City; his grandparents, Frances Allen, Garden City, and Ernest and June Gordon, Liberal; and his stepbrothers and stepsisters, Scott Case and Chandra Case, both of Manhattan, Brent Miller and Kelly Miller, both of Frankfort, Germany, Cody Phelps, Oklahoma City, Calib Phelps and Sean Phelps, both of Hooker.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Dennis Gordon Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Elvin F. Odle
CIMARRON - Elvin F. Odle, 71, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at his home in Cimarron.
He was born Dec. 21, 1929, at Montezuma, the son of Francis Rubin and Bertha Luella (Whittaker) Odle. He grew up in Montezuma and graduated from Cimarron High School.
Mr. Odle was a farmer and welder. He had served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Korea.
On June 5, 1954, he married Helen D. Borneman at Pueblo, Colo. They lived in Lamar, Colo., until moving to Cimarron in 1970. She died Nov. 12, 1987.
Survivors include two sons, Rick Odle and John Odle, both of Cimarron; four daughters, Cheryl Clark, Lisa Rowan and Patty Woods, all of Cimarron, and Keri Crosley, Enid, Okla.; a sister, Geneva Norine Odle, Cimarron; eight grandsons; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Cimarron, with Charles Kerr officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Howard Gotschall Post No. 1714 VFW.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, First Christian Church or St. Catherine Hospice, all in care of the funeral home.
Leona Elaine Hurd
Funeral for Leona Elaine Hurd, 65, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Hurd died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at her home in Garden City.
She was born Sept. 8, 1936, at Garden City, the daughter of Edward and Ida (Pope) Ochs. She attended Eminence School in Finney County, Buffalo Jones School in Garden City and graduated from Garden City High School in 1955.
After her schooling, she lived in Colorado and California before returning to Garden City in 1964. She worked as an insurance adjustor and secretary at St. Paul Insurance Co. After her retirement, she worked at Gibson's.
Mrs. Hurd was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Garden City. Her special interests were fishing, camping, sewing and embroidery.
On Nov. 5, 1966, she married Eugene Hurd at Raton, N.M. He survives. She is also survived by five sons, Mike Hurd, Atlanta, Mark Hawkins, Poway, Calif., Daniel Hurd and Michael Hawkins, both of Garden City, and Phillip Hurd, Salina; two daughters, Lori Frame, Ovid, Colo., and Debra Hall, Beaver, Okla.; four brothers, Leo Ochs, Cawker City, Elmer Ochs and Walter Ochs, both of Garden City, and Leroy Ochs, Warsaw, Mo.; six sisters, Alvera Litzenberger and Edna Crase, both of Garden City, Barbara Petr, Blue Rapids, Lenora Wortman, Pierceville, Wilma Guy, Longmont, Colo., and Esther Lewis, Stratton, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Timothy; two brothers, Paul Ochs and Melvin Ochs; a sister, Ruth Mai; and three infant brothers and sisters.

Viola Zirkel
Viola Zirkel, 97, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born Dec. 29, 1903, at Oxford, the daughter of Frank and Josephine (Binkey) Jackson.
A Garden City resident since February, moving from Loveland, Colo., she was a retired beauty operator. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs, Colo., and was a volunteer for Goodwill Industries.
On May 2, 1919, she married Henry Will Fred Zirkel at Oxford. He died Jan. 12, 1990, at Colorado Springs.
Survivors include two sons, Edwin L. Zirkel, Lamar, Colo., and Louis D. Zirkel, Garden City; a daughter, Dorothy P. Wright, Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, George Jackson, California; four sisters, Ethel Robb, Oregon, Hazel Cross, Colorado, Louise Jackson, Oklahoma, and Lola Benoit, California; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 34 great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Carroll Moroney officiating.
There will be no visitation. Memorials to the Viola Zirkel Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.
Edna F. Fisher
CIMARRON - Edna F. Fisher, 74, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Born Aug. 16, 1927, at Garden City, she was the daughter of Willis A. Sr. and Iva Wilson. She graduated from Cimarron High School in 1946.
She married Howard "Bud" Fisher in Cimarron. They moved to Florida 30 years ago after living in Kansas where they had owned and operated a family grocery store. He died in 1990. Mrs. Fisher retired this past year after working as a medical secretary for 27 years for Dr. James Carratt.
Survivors include two sons, Greg, Plains, and Randy, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Keith Wilson, Wichita, Willis Wilson Jr., Topeka, and Ivan Wilson, Cimarron; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Cimarron. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.
Fred W. Bohl
LAKIN - Funeral for Fred W. Bohl, 86, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lakin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery, with Masonic graveside rites conducted.
Mr. Bohl died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
He was born Oct. 3, 1914, in Kearny County, the son of Adam and Mary Madeline (Knaus) Bohl. He attended rural Kearny County schools.
A lifetime resident of Kearny County and Lakin, he was a farmer and stockman. He was a former member of the Fiddlers and Pickers, and enjoyed playing, repairing and building fiddles. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his farming.
Mr. Bohl was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lakin, Emerald Lodge No. 289, Santa Fe Trail Shrine at Garden City, Order of the Eastern Star, Eagles Lodge of Garden City, and the Lakin Gun Club. He had served on the Kearny County Hospital Board.
In 1938, he married Katherine Mai. She died in 1965. He married Melba Bramlett in 1967. She died in 1974. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother and four sisters.
On Feb. 19, 1977, he married Gladys Michel at Deerfield. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Don Bohl, Garden City; two stepsons, Victor Michel, Lakin, and Dennis Michel, Tulsa, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Linda Puckett, Lakin; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mattie McClure
ULYSSES - Mattie McClure, 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.
She was born Aug. 4, 1912, in rural Stevens County, the daughter of LeRoy and Lena (Saul) McMillan.
A Ulysses resident since 1945, she was a homemaker, a member of First Baptist Church of Ulysses and a former Cub Scout Den Mother.
On May 12, 1934, she married J.G. McClure at Hugoton. He died Sept. 8, 1994. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Issac McMillan.
Survivors include three sons, Walter, Hugoton, Gerald, Burlingame, and Wayne, Early, Texas; a daughter, Yetta Faye Figgins, Johnson City; two sisters, Hattie Homan, Uniontown, and Velma Hittle, Hugoton; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Barry Durkee officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Western Prairie Care Home, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
