Melvin L. Scott
CIMARRON - Melvin L. Scott, 64, died September 20, 2001 at his home in Cimarron.
He was born November 14, 1936 in Jetmore, Kansas, the son of Raymond and Gladys O. Burns Scott. A lifetime area resident, he was a truck driver for Charles Burns Trucking, Irsik and Doll Feed Service and was currently driving for Randy Burns Trucking, all of Cimarron.
He served in the United States Army.
He was a former member of the Thoroughbred Race Horse Association.
On August 2, 1958, he married Jody R. Patton of Dodge City. She survives.
Other survivors include: one son, Roger and his wife Traci of Kalvesta; two daughters, Sharla Scott, of Woodward, Oklahoma and Luanna Duran and her husband Fred, of Cimarron; mother, Gladys Scott of Cimarron; three brothers, Derrel Lee Scott and Jay Dean Scott and wife Alice both of Cimarron and Gary Scott and wife Jean of Goddard, Kansas; two sisters, Donna Stice and husband Henry or Las Vegas, Nevada and Shirley Dearing and husband Derrel of Cimarron and 9 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, one son, Randy Lee Scott and a grandson, Kevin Pickle.
Memorial Service will be 1:30 p.m.. Monday at the Cimarron Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Jim Bond presiding. There will be no public visitation., cremation took place. Inturnment will be in Cimarron Cemetery, Cimarron.

Maynard LeRoyce Kelling
Maynard LeRoyce Kelling, 81, Kanorado, Kansas, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2001, at the Kit Carson County Hospital in Burlington, Colorado.
Maynard was born July 28, 1920 in Smith Center, Kansas. He was the youngest of three children born to Katherine Jane (Dewey) and Ralph Elmer Kelling. His family moved to Kanorado when he was five years old where he attended school and graduated from Kanorado High School in 1938.
He entered the military in September 1940 where he served in Africa, France and Central Europe. He was captured and spent time as a P.O.W. in camp in Germany. While in the service, while receiving other citations, he received the Purple Heart. He was discharged on September 19, 1945.
After the service, he attended Coyne University in Chicago, Illinois and graduated in 1947 as an electrician. On November 10, 1952, Maynard was united in marriage to Mary A. Gravner in Raton, New Mexico. To this union was born Michael LeRoyce in 1958 and Dena Rae in 1963.
He worked for A & W Electrical Construction, he also did electrical maintenance for Great Western Sugar and also operated heavy equipment. He retired in 1984.
Maynard enjoyed working on old TVs and radios, and anything that had to do with electricity. He loved dearly his three grandchildren; Kristen, Nicholas and Dustin. He also enjoyed traveling to the mountains and their beauty.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Junior and his infant son, Michael LeRoyce.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 48 years, Mary of Kanorado; his daughter, Dena Barker and her husband Todd of Leoti; three grandchildren, Kristen Durant, Nicholas and Dustin Barker, all of Leoti; one sister, Vernita Sellman of Burlington, Colorado and her daughter, Marcy Carrol, Kanorado.
Funeral services for Maynard will be held Monday, September 24, 2001 at the Love Funeral Home in Burlington, Colorado. Pastor Leonard Cox officiating. Visitation will be at the Love Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, September 23. Burial will follow in the Kanorado Cemetery, Kanorado, Kansas with military honors by the U.S. Army, Ft. Riley, Kansas and the V.F.W. Post No. 1133, Goodland, Kansas. A memorial fund has been established in Maynard's name to the center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, and may be left at the Goodland First National Bank.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Love Funeral Home in Burlington, Colorado.
Marcella B. Degnan
Marcella B. Degnan, 87, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, in Garden City.
She was born Nov. 3, 1913, at Hays, the daughter of Jacob George and Mary (Breit) Dome. When she was young, the family moved to Sitka where she attended schools. She later graduated from St. Mary of the Plains high school and college.
On Nov. 23, 1938, she married John Degnan at Ashland. They lived there until moving to Garden City in 1947. While living in Ashland, Mrs. Degnan worked with the A.S.C.S. After moving to Garden City, she continued working with A.S.C.S., retiring in 1987 as the chief executive director.
Mrs. Degnan was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Altar Society and the Dominican Associates - Dominican Order at Great Bend. She was active in the R.C.I.A. program at St. Dominic's, volunteered with Red Cross blood drives, and was active in Extension Homemaker Units. She enjoyed needle work, seamstress work, reading, music, hunting, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Her husband died Jan. 17, 1986. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James Dome; and a sister, Avilla Nelson.
Survivors include three daughters, Deanna Marie Ewers, Dayton, Ohio, Paula Jean Prokop, Garden City, and Micki Kleymann, Tribune; five sisters, Joanna Daily and Sabina Dome, both of Ashland, Isabel Cox, St. John, Carol Duke, Crowley, Texas, and Patricia Stevenson, Fall River; five grandchildren; two granddaughters-in-law; and one great-grandson.
Vigil service will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Revs. Joseph Bahr and Frank Jordan officiating. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Ashland.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Marcella Degnan Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Dominic Catholic School, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Marsha Lynn Michel
Funeral for Marsha Lynn Michel, 54, of Tulsa, Okla., will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, conducted by the English congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Michel died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Sept. 5, 1947, at Garden City, the daughter of Paul and Mabel (Hawkins) Helm. She grew up in Holcomb, attended Holcomb schools, graduated from Holcomb High School in 1965, and then attended airline school with Northwest Airlines.
On June 6, 1970, she married Dennis D. Michel at Garden City. They moved from Garden City to Tulsa in 1995. Mrs. Michel worked in customer relations for Northwest Airlines and later worked for 10 years at Garden National Bank. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Tulsa, and enjoyed fishing, history and especially enjoyed her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Duane Michel, of the home; a daughter, Terrie Gonzales, Garden City; her mother, Mabel Helm Farnsworth, Ponca City, Okla.; a brother, Dale Helm, Ovilla, Texas; a sister, Essie Ford, Ponca City; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Special Olympics, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Fayetta V. "Pab" Lowry
HUGOTON - Funeral for Fayetta V. "Pab" Lowry, 82, of Hugoton, will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Assembly of God Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Miss Lowry died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita.
She was born in Stafford County, the daughter of Roy "Slim" and Opal (Williamson) Lowry.
Miss Lowry was a bus driver for about 20 years for Hugoton schools, enjoying the children she took to school. She also enjoyed playing bingo, and was a member of Assembly of God Church and the VFW Auxiliary, both at Hugoton.
Survivors include a brother, Cleston C. Lowry, Hugoton; two sisters, Wanna Maxwell, Wichita, and Eula I. Smith, Copeland; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Cedric Lowry.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, and at the church from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
Floyd W. Shipley
Floyd W. Shipley, 68, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Aug. 28, 1933, at Orion, the son of Warren F. and Ethel Mae (Jenkins) Shipley. The family lived in Washington, Oregon and Idaho before moving to Garden City in 1941. In 1945, they moved to Lakin.
Mr. Shipley served in the U.S. Army from 1950 until retiring in 1972 as a Staff Sergeant, E-6. While in the service, he served one tour during the Korean War and two tours in Vietnam. He served in Greenland, Germany and various places in the United States.
After the service, he moved to Garden City and worked at IBP for 15 years, retiring in 1995. He enjoyed watching western movies, reading, camping, fishing, hunting, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
On July 13, 1952, he married Dorothy E. Wishon at Raton, N.M. She died Feb. 15, 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Frieda Hamblin and Virginia Curzman.
Survivors include two sons, Warren F. Shipley II, Garden City, and Frank E. Shipley, Calhan, Colo.; two daughters, Teresa M. Craig, Wichita, and Terry A. Gunderson, Glenwood, Iowa; three brothers, Kenneth Shipley, Benton City, Wash., Boyd Shipley, Gig Harbor, Wash., and Dale Shipley, Roseburg, Ore.; three sisters, Geneva Slate, Elkhart, Alma Wright, Wasilla, Alaska, and Juanita Friend, Nanpa, Idaho; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
