Irene R. Garcia
Vigil service for Irene R. Garcia, 80, will be 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Garcia died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at her home in Las Cruces, N.M.
She was born Oct. 19, 1920, at Dodge City, the daughter of Cayetano and Rafaela (Padilla) Rodriguez. She grew up in Dodge City, graduating from high school there.
A Garden City resident since 1942, moving from Dodge City, she had lived in Las Cruces for seven years. She assisted migrants in the early 1960s and helped several people prepare for their citizenship.
Mrs. Garcia was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City where she served on the pastoral council and was a cursillista since July 1970 and also belonged to Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral in Las Cruces.
She was a member of the American G.I. Forum Women's Auxiliary, Head Start from 1971 to 1975, Garden City High School Board from 1985 to 1987, and also belonged to several community committees and organizations. She enjoyed attending the Senior Center in Las Cruces, keeping up with current events and spending time with her family.
On Sept. 22, 1943, she married Dionisio C. Garcia at Dodge City. He died Oct. 16, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by three sons, Chuck Garcia, Albuquerque, N.M., Dennis Garcia, Tucson, Ariz., and Philip Garcia, Sacramento, Calif.; seven daughters, Geri Duran, Garden City, Marcella Garcia, Dallas, Sylvia Nungarary, Carrollton, Texas, Zante "Lisa" Garcia, Arlington, Texas, Virginia Jaramillo, Rio Rancho, N.M., Christina Padilla and Maria Elena Perez, both of Las Cruces; six brothers, Salvador Rodriguez and Eziquel Rodriguez, both of Dodge City, Cecil Rodriguez, Nickerson, Gonzalo Rodriguez, Kansas City, David Rodriguez, Glennville, Ill., and Maurice Rodriguez, San Bernadino, Calif.; three sisters, Enedina Rodriguez, Garden City, Rita Gomez, Dodge City, and Maria Paz Cervantes, Sacramento; 24 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the D.C. and Irene Garcia Memorial Scholarship Fund at Garden City Community College, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Lois E. Graham
Lois E. Graham, 76, of Collinsville, Okla., died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Collinsville.
She was born March 1, 1925, at Mitchell, Neb., the daughter of Ralph and Nellie Armstrong.
Mrs. Graham had lived in Syracuse and Lakin before moving to Collinsville.
She is survived by seven children, the Rev. Clyde Graham, Darby, Mont., William Graham, Horace, N.D., Bertha See, Collinsville, Margo Puls, Lexington, Neb., Ruth Kleeman, Lakin, Hobart Graham, Penrose, Colo., and Elsie Graham, Albuquerque, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jeanne Mueller, Kendall, and Lorita Hime, Oskaloosa; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Clifford Allan Graham; a granddaughter; and three brothers, Ralph, Hobart and Marion Armstrong.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Holly, Colo., with the Rev. Rod Collins officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and prior to the service Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Owasso (Okla.) Baptist Children's Home or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral chapel.
Earl "Slugger" Slawson
Memorial service for Earl "Slugger" Slawson, 85, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Richmond Graham officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.
Mr. Slawson died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born May 22, 1916, at Highberry, Mo., the son of Frank and Maude (Sanders) Slawson. The family moved to Garden City in 1928. He attended schools in Missouri and also attended a country school south of Garden City.
While serving in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945, he received the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal. After the service, he returned to Garden City.
Mr. Slawson worked for George Morton for a number of years before working for Dave Stroman for nine years, retiring in 1978. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, belonged to the Eagles Lodge for more than 20 years, and was a member of the Rodeo Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. He enjoyed camping, hiking, traveling, boating and the rodeo, especially roping.
On Aug. 28, 1971, he married Nell Payne at Hutchinson. She survives. He is also survived by four daughters, Wanda Christian and Lorene Farmer, both of Garden City, Patricia Prindle, Lubbock, Texas, and LaVerne, Redding, Calif.; four sisters, Vivian Becker and Opal Becker, both of Garden City, Ila Mae Durrant, Oakley, and Dorothy, Phoenix; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Garden Valley Retirement Village, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Virginia M. Flannagan
SCOTT CITY - A private family service for Virginia M. Flannagan, 91, was Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial was in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mrs. Flannagan died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
She was born Aug. 15, 1909, at Tulsa, Okla., the daughter of William T. and Minnie Mae (Wetzel) Parrott. She graduated from Tulsa University.
A homemaker, she had resided in Scott City since 1948. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, El Quartelejo Study Club, American Association of University Women, American Legion Auxiliary and Sunflower Unit EHU and was an honorary member of Pi Gamma Mu fraternity.
On Oct. 11, 1933, she married John J. Flannagan at Independence. He died Sept. 16, 1999, at Scott City. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a son, William Joseph Flannagan.
She is survived by a son, John Thomas Flannagan, Overland Park; four grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
Opal M. Oliver Hildreth
ULYSSES - Funeral for Opal M. Oliver Hildreth, 86, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Assembly of God Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Mike Holman officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.
Mrs. Hildreth died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born March 3, 1915, at Haven, the daughter of Frank and Hazel Mary (Moore) Dunsworth.
A resident of southwest Kansas since 1925, she had lived in Stanton, Grant, Haskell and Kearny counties. She was a homemaker and owned several rental properties.
Mrs. Hildreth attended Pleasant Prairie Church of God, Satanta, and was a member of First Assembly of God Church, Ulysses.
On July 28, 1935, she married Sylvester Oliver at Johnson City. He died Nov. 29, 1957. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Jim, Frank, Carl, Ewell and Alva Dunsworth; two sisters, Ida Lighty and Elva Jarvis; an infant sister; and a great-grandson.
She married James P. Hildreth on June 22, 1958, at Ulysses. He survives. Other survivors are two sons, Elmer and Leland Oliver, both of Dayton, Texas; three daughters, Darlene Dickson, Lakin, Betty Brent, Ulysses, and Velda Holsten, Ensign; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to First Assembly of God Church, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
M/Sgt. Dean H. Witt
PIERCEVILLE - Graveside service for M/Sgt. Dean H. Witt, 69, of Wichita, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Gary Meeks officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Mr. Witt died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Born in Pierceville on April 16, 1932, to Hugo and Valarie (Benecke) Witt, he grew up there. He graduated from Pierceville High School and attended Garden City Community College.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years, retiring as a master sergeant in 1972. He worked for Jim's Import in Wichita from 1974 to 1999. A Wichita resident since 1959, he enjoyed computers and racing stock cars, motorcycles and radio-controlled boats.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Witt; two sons, Richard W. Witt and Gary Lee Witt, both of Wichita; two brothers, Walter M. Witt and Carroll L. Witt, both of Pierceville; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson.
Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 tonight and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Dean Witt Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Colgin Tanner Lohman
Funeral for Colgin Tanner Lohman, infant son of Chad Thomas and Christine Michelle (Hance) Lohman of Manhattan, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Isidore Catholic Student Center, Manhattan, with the Rev. Keith Weber officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lyons Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Herington.
Colgin died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Mercy Health Center in Manhattan.
He was born June 19, 2001, at Manhattan.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Michael and Marie Hance, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Butch and Debbie Knight, former Garden City residents now living in Herington, and Tom and Jane Lohman, Stuttgart, Germany; and his great-grandparents, Gene and Betty Myers of Hope, Eugene and Cleo Lohman, Aviston, Ill., Clara Niemann, Breese, Ill., and Dennis and Minnie Hance, Berrien Springs, Mich.
Visitation hours are from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, Manhattan, and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the student center.
