Laura Fern Royer
SYRACUSE - Funeral for Laura Fern Royer, 88, of Syracuse, will be 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday at the Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerrel officiating. Graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.
Mrs. Royer died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.
She was born Sept. 23, 1912, at Syracuse, the daughter of William Ellis and Louise (Ruggles) Patton. She attended Syracuse High School, graduating in 1929.
Mrs. Royer had been a lifetime resident of Syracuse, with the exception of 1925 to 1927 when the family lived in Yumatilla, Fla. She took over her father's family business, Patton Insurance Agency in Syracuse, which she operated for more than 50 years before retiring in 1977. She also worked for the World War II Selective Service for Hamilton County and served as the Syracuse City Treasurer for 38 years.
She was a past chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, was Hamilton County delegate to the Silver Haired Legislature, and a member of Syracuse Methodist Church where she belonged to the church choir for more than 60 years.
Mrs. Royer also belonged to the Methodist Wesleyan Guild, was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star, where she was a past worthy matron, and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Hamilton County Swimming Pool Board, Hamilton County Extended Care Facility Board and the Mental Health Board. She enjoyed singing, gardening, playing bridge, reading and spending time with her family.
She married Raymond Morris Royer in October 1945.
Survivors include her twin son and daughter, William Morris Royer, Arcadia, Calif., and Patricia Popejoy, Johnson City; a granddaughter; two stepgrandsons; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Don Patton; and two sisters, Lois Patton and Winifred Wilkerson.
Visitation hours are until 7 MDT tonight at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to Hamilton County Hospital or Hamilton County Extended Care Facility, both in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1263.
Dorothy Elizabeth Hesser
COPELAND - Dorothy Elizabeth Hesser, 80, of Copeland, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit, where she had been a resident since October 2000.
She was born April 18, 1921, at Anthony, the daughter of James Ernest and Velma (Prowse) Seifert.
On July 29, 1945, she married L.W. "Bill" Hesser at Anthony. They moved from Anthony to Copeland in 1951. He died March 27, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Charles Seifert.
Mrs. Hesser taught school in Bluff City, worked for the Copeland News for many years and worked at Copeland Grocery Store. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and VFW Auxiliary, both at Copeland. She enjoyed doing crafts, embroidery work and crocheting, and giving her handmade gifts to her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen K. Martin, Sublette, and Barbara A. Roberts, Mullinville; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Copeland, with the Revs. Warren Cico and Dan Pearce officiating. Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to Copeland Santa Fe Senior Center, Copeland Cemetery

Leo Francis Englert
Leo Francis Englert, 88, Pueblo, Colo., died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001.
He was born Dec. 19, 1912, at home in a sod house near Ingalls.
The only one of the five Englert children who received a high school education, he then taught in country schools in Finney and Hamilton counties.
In December 1933, he married Agatha Ohmes at Garden City. They and four of their five children moved to a ranch on the outskirts of Ramah, Colo., in 1947. He endured the 1930s Dust Bowl on farms in southwestern Kansas and the high plains of eastern Colorado.
Mr. Englert is best known for his work for the Soil Conservation Service, working with farmers around the Colorado communities of Simla and Agate to preserve and protect their land by putting to use contour plowing and other conservation measures.
After retiring from the Soil Conservation Service, he volunteered as a driver for senior citizens groups in Simla and Pueblo.
He was a member of Ramah Lions Club, the Eagles and the Knights of Columbus. His interests included gardening, woodworking, auctions and garage sales, and he never passed up a chance to play a game of cards.
He is survived by two sons, Thad Englert, Estancia, N.M., and Timothy Englert, Lafayette, Colo.; two daughters, Rosetta Land, Pueblo, and Mary Ann Sheridan, Simla; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral is planned for Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Calhan, Colo. Burial will be in Ramah Cemetery.

John A. "Bus" Pelnar
HOLCOMB - John A. "Bus" Pelnar, 84, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Finney County, the son of John E. and Sarah E. (Craig) Pelnar.
A lifetime resident of Finney County, he had been a meter repairman for Wheatland Electric.
Mr. Pelnar was a charter member of the Holcomb City Council, a lifetime member of John J. Haskell VFW Post No. 2279 and was instrumental in developing the John Pelnar Underground Overhead Metering School. He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran serving with the 457th Air Service Squadron.
On Nov. 3, 1945, he married Helen I. Paul at Lakin. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Kenneth D. Pelnar, Garden City; two daughters, Paula Nevin, Holcomb, and Debbi Harris, Lakin; two brothers, Les Pelnar, Sublette, and George Pelnar, McPherson; a sister, Marjorie Deaton, Protection; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jacob and Robert Pelnar; and two sisters, Myrtle Pelnar and Josephine Cunningham.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with Chaplain Shannon Borchert officiating. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Center for Basic Cancer Research, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Mildred J. Hands
Mildred J. Hands, 75, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born April 1, 1926, in Gray County, the daughter of Albert and Cecil Thomas Algrim.
A lifetime resident of the Garden City area, she was a farmer and a homemaker. She belonged to First Christian Church of Garden City and the Senior Center of Finney County.
On April 13, 1946, she married Raymond Hands at Deerfield. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Rick Hands, Garden City; three daughters, Karen Reece, Rocky Ford, Colo., Celia Stansbury, Richmond, Va., and Rhona Hands, New Orleans; a brother, Irwin Algrim, Garden City; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Clifton Algrim; and a sister, Lorene Montgomery.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Nellie A. Regnier
DIGHTON - Former Dighton resident Nellie A. Regnier, 83, of Watonga, Okla.,, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, in Oklahoma City.
She was born Aug. 21, 1917, at Schiller, Ill., the daughter of Bernard and Martha (Kowalski) Millershaski.
On July 1, 1939, she married Ira M. Turner at Dodge City. He died in 1973. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Robert M. Turner; and a brother, Raymond Millershaski.
On June 9, 1955, she married Firmin E. Regnier at Kingman. He died March 12, 1988.
Mrs. Regnier worked as a department store clerk and waitress. She had lived in Dodge City and Hutchinson, resided in Dighton for more than 40 years, and moved to Watonga in 1996.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth J. Turner, San Antonio; two daughters, Susan M. Sinclair, Watonga, and Kay McEachern, Ulysses; two brothers, Donald and Richard Millershaski, both of Ingalls; three sisters, Albena Cofer and Rosana Kinkelaar, both of Dodge City, and Julia Pelton, Wichita; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Watonga, with the Rev. David A. Cowden as celebrant. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery
at Watonga.
