The Rev. Leonard Samuel Cowan
The Rev. Leonard Samuel Cowan, 96, of Wichita, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, in Wichita.
He was born June 18, 1915, in Beaver County, Okla., the son of Thaddeus McKelvey and Christine (Thompson) Cowan. He graduated from Beaver High School in 1933, and from Southwestern College in Winfield and Boston Theological Seminary in Massachusetts.
In 1942, he was appointed an associate minister for the First Methodist Church in Garden City. He then met and married Elizabeth Sample. She died July 1, 2000.
He had served Lakin Methodist Church, Woodland Methodist in Wichita, First Methodist in Garden City and Newton, and St. Paul's Methodist in Wichita. In 1956, he was invited to tour the Holy Land for seven weeks with Bishop Dawson and other young ministers.
He became executive minister of the Wichita Council of Churches in 1965. During his 10 years, he organized many projects including the Prison Ministry, Indian Service Center, Operation Clothesline, Halfway Houses for adults and youth, Senior Services and Meals on Wheels, United Interfaith Commission on Mass Media (UNICOMM), a bilingual newspaper and ministry with Spanish church services and a medical clinic. In the late 1970s, he led the way toward the change of the name of Wichita Council of Churches to Inter-Faith Ministries.
He became executive minister of the United Methodist Urban Ministries in 1976, which collaborated on Give-A-Life, UNICOMM, Crisis Center and Jail Ministries.
Working for prisoner rehabilitation, he was opposed to the death penalty even through his friends, the Herbert Clutter family of Holcomb, were murdered during his Garden City ministry.
After retiring in 1980, he became minister of visitation at the First United Methodist Church in Wichita, where he continued for 15 years visiting shut-ins, hospitals and prisons and performing weddings and funerals. As a volunteer, he worked until very recently in the Sedgwick County Jail Ministry.
He is survived by a son, Robert Cowan, New York; two daughters, Carole Cowan, Newburgh, N.Y., and Cathy Cowan, Seattle; two brothers, Ted Cowan, Enid, Okla., and Calvin Cowan, Grand Junction, Colo.; two sisters, Pauline Ohmart, Enid, and Esther Winchester, Derby.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Wichita.

Josefina-Garcia Tinoco
HUGOTON - Josefina-Garcia Tinoco, 73, of Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso, Texas.
A homemaker, she was born Aug. 16, 1928, at Morelia, the daughter of Crescencio and Margarita (Vargas) Garcia.
She is survived by seven sons, Jose, Jorge, Santiago, Juan, Sergio, Martin and Arturo Tinoco, all of Hugoton; two daughters, Maria De Jesus Gomez, of Morelia, and Maria DeLos Angeles Alfaro, Hugoton; three brothers, Jose Guadalupe Garcia, Cecilio Garcia and Lino Garcia, all of Hugoton; 26 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Santiago Tinoco, and her parents.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Monte Santo Pentecostal Holiness Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Jorge Tinoco officiating. Burial will be in Moscow Cemetery, Moscow.
Visitation will take place at the church.
Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.
Barbara Jean Kisel DeMain
LAKIN - Vigil service for Barbara Jean Kisel DeMain, 56, of Rhome, Texas, will be 7 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms as celebrant.
Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mrs. DeMain died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Baylor Medical Center in Grapevine, Texas.
She was born June 14, 1945, at Pueblo, Colo., the daughter of Ollie and Mary (Zakrysek) Kisel. She graduated from Lakin High School in 1963 and attended Emily Griffin Opportunity School in Denver.
Mrs. DeMain was an administrative assistant with the Nokia Corp. in Fort Worth, Texas. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church in Keller, Texas.
On July 24, 1965, she married Joe DeMain at Lakin. He survives. She is also survived by two daughters, Kathleen Conner, Newark, Texas, and Susan DeMain, Grandbury, Texas; a son, Joe DeMain, Lake Tawakoni, Texas; her father and stepmother, Ollie and Thelma Kisel, Lakin; a sister, Carol Grauberger, Lakin; a brother, James Kisel, South Bend, Ind.; four grandchildren; six great-nieces; and two great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother.
Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.
Tianna Marie Rodriquez
LEOTI - Vigil service for Tianna Marie Rodriquez, 21-month-old daughter of Abel Torres and Susan Marie Rodriguez of Leoti, was 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leoti. Funeral was to be 10 this morning at the church, with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial was to be in Leoti Cemetery.
Tianna died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
She was born Sept. 4, 1999, at Jetmore and had lived in Leoti.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rodriquez, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Torres, and Irene Salas, all of Leoti; and her great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Greg Rodriquez, Mr. and Mrs. Isabel Salas, and Mr. and Mrs. Lioninico Torres, all of Leoti.

Lawrence Owen Saloga
Lawrence Owen Saloga, 53, of Pratt, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, in a construction accident in Topeka that also claimed the lives of two of his co-workers.
He was born Aug. 6, 1948, at Larned, the son of Emil Saloga and Ruth Anderson Saloga McDaniel.
A Pratt resident since 1963, moving from St. John, he was a construction mechanic with Emerson Construction Co., Topeka, and had previously worked in Pratt as an oil field construction mechanic. He was a member of the Eagles at Hobbs, N.M., and the VFW at Pratt, and had served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970.
On Feb. 12, 1983, he married Kathy L. Pearce at Pratt. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Misty Hall, Wichita, Trish Thomas, Lovington, N.M., and Kellie Saloga, Levelland, Texas; five brothers, Gilbert, of Hobbs, Darrel, Payson, Ariz., Eugene, Garden City, Marvin, Roosevelt, Utah, and Leland, Odessa, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt, with the Rev. Harold Wilcox officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt, with Fort Riley Army Military Honors conducted.

Patricia "Patsy" Hopkins
Patricia "Patsy" Hopkins, 77, a former Garden City resident, died Friday, July 6, 2001.
She was born Jan. 26, 1924, at Nogales, Ariz.
During World War II, she met and married Capt. Dan Hopkins. After the war, they made their home in Garden City where they raised their three children, Robert, Nancy Carol and Stephen, all graduates of Garden City High School.
Mrs. Hopkins was an active civic worker and a member of the Community Church, PEO and other organizations in Garden City.
In addition to her three children, she is survived by seven grandchildren.
