Bobby D. Kindsvater
Bobby D. Kindsvater, 68, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born April 7, 1933, at Minneola, the son of William and Ellen Nora (Foss) Kindsvater.
A Garden City resident since 1998, moving from Albuquerque, N.M., he had been a communications specialist and cryptographer for Sandia National Laboratories. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict.
Survivors include four brothers, Donald, Idabel, Okla., Ron, Garden City, Larry, Belen, N.M., and Gary, Wichita; and two sisters, Vera Mayberry, West Plains, Mo., and Betty Raff, Lompoc, Calif.
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in the chapel at Garden Valley Retirement Village, with the Rev. Richmond Graham officiating.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Garden Valley Retirement Village, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.
John W. Dickerson
John W. Dickerson, 74, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born Jan. 25, 1927, at Meade, the son of Frederick and Pearl (Henry) Dickerson. He graduated from Meade High School in 1945, from the University of Kansas in 1949 and from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley in 1952.
Mr. Dickerson was a teacher and coach at Burlington, Colo., and at Goodland before moving to Garden City in 1952. He taught at Garden City High School and served as head football coach from 1952 until 1967. He later served as assistant superintendent of Garden City schools and assistant to the president at Garden City Community College.
He was a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, served on the vestry of the church, belonged to Southwind Country Club, was a past exalted ruler of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks and was an organizer of the University of Kansas Golf Tournament in Garden City.
He served as president of the Kansas Coaches Association, Garden City Rotary Club, Kansas Association of Community College Business Officials and the Kansas Association of Educational Negotiators. He enjoyed traveling and playing golf.
On Aug. 20, 1950, he married Natalie Spasovich at Chicago. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Laurie Holmes, Dexter; a son, Michael Dickerson, Olathe; his mother, Meade; two brothers, Fred J. Dickerson, Eagle Rock, Mo., and James Dickerson, Fowler, Ill.; a sister, Florence McMichael, Evansville, Ind.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Don Martin officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, Emmaus House or Garden City Community College Endowment Association, all in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Adrian T. "Ade" Redel
Adrian T. "Ade" Redel, 78, of Oakley, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born Nov. 10, 1922, at Vienna, Mo., the son of George James and Agnes Frances (Bade) Redel.
A retired naval officer and pilot, he had been a resident of the Oakley area for 30 years, moving from Norfolk, Va. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Oakley, was a third degree Knights of Columbus at Oakley Council 2866, and belonged to Oakley VFW Post No. 2981 and Oakley VFW Taps Club.
On Oct. 19, 1950, he married Rose Gerstner at Hays. She survives. He is also survived by four daughters, Sharon E. Harrell, Virginia Beach, Va., Jody Neuman, Garden City, Adrienne Carrica, Chanhassen, Minn., and Janet Ptacek, Dakota Dunes, S.D.; three brothers, Owen, Jefferson, Mo., Connie, St. Louis, and James, Vienna; five sisters, Margaret Jones, St. Louis, Marcella Redel, Arlington, Va., Virginia Redel, Vienna, Mary Agnes Hefferly, Birmingham, Ala., and Jane Sordyl, Springfield, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, George, and his parents.
Rosary and wake service will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Oakley. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Oakley, with military graveside rites conducted by Oakley VFW and American Legion.

Jonathon Avila
SYRACUSE - Jonathon Avila, 6-month-old son of Jose Alejandro Avila and Lydia Gonzalez of Syracuse, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, in a boating accident at John Martin Reservoir in Colorado. The accident also took the life of his grandmother, Angela Avila.
Jonathon was born Dec. 15, 2000, at Lakin.
Rosary and vigil service will be 7 p.m. MDT Sunday at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Syracuse. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. MDT Monday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms officiating. Burial will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.

Angela (Lara) Avila
SYRACUSE - Angela (Lara) Avila, 50, of Syracuse, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, in a boating accident at John Martin Reservoir in Colorado. The accident also took the life of her grandson, Jonathon Avila.
She was born May 9, 1951, at Urireo, Municipio de Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico, the daughter of Salud Lara and Carmen Guzman.
On June 13, 1970, she married Isiddro Avila in Urireo. He survives.
A resident of the United States since December 2000, she was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, making tamales and crocheting.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Efrain Avila, Tribune, Jose Alejandro Avila and Isidro Avila, both of Syracuse; four daughters, Maria Carmen Avila and Maria De Los Angles Rosala, both of Urireo, Maria Salud Ibarra, Syracuse, and Maria Teresa Lara, California; and numerous grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Jose Avila.

Vanessa Cano
SYRACUSE - Vanessa Cano, 6-year-old daughter of Alejandro and Flor Violeta Cano of Syracuse, is missing and presumed dead as the result of a boating accident Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at John Martin Reservoir in Colorado. The accident also took the life of her sister, Sonia Cano.
Vanessa was born Feb. 2, 1995, in Ciudad, Juarez, Mexico.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Alejandro Cano, Syracuse.

Sonia Cano
SYRACUSE - Sonia Cano, 18-month-old daughter of Alejandro and Flor Violeta Cano of Syracuse, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, in a boating accident at John Martin Reservoir in Colorado. Her sister, Vanessa Cano, 6, is still missing and presumed drowned.
Sonia was born Dec. 8, 1999, at Lakin.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Alejandro Cano, Syracuse.

Vernon Coates
Graveside service for Vernon Coates, 68, will be 2 p.m. Friday in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.
Mr. Coates died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 30, 1932, in Garden City, the son of Henry R. and Nellie S. (Tope) Coates.
A lifetime Garden City resident, he worked as a farm laborer.
Survivors include three brothers, Leonard and Dennis, both of Garden City, and Bob, Wiley, Colo.; and two sisters, Freda Norman and Jeanie Montgomery, both of Phoenix. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Jim, Don and Ron Coates.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
