A tomboy, she loved farm life. She started working with her father at an early age, and became an expert at handling a team of horses. Her father had no tractor so planting and harvesting was done with the horse team.
Shortly after graduating from high school, she married Lawrence Lundy Paddack of Lakin. They had two sons, Laurence Keith "Larry" in 1937, and Glenn Douglas in 1939.
Mr. Paddack moved the family to Stevenson, Wash., in order to be closer to treatment for his chronic osteomyelitis in one leg which he had suffered from since his teen-age years. In 1949, she moved with the boys to Denver, working as office manager for Empire Petroleum, a position highly compensated for a woman in the 1950s. She was able to own and lease trucks for hauling petroleum products in addition to her duties at Empire Petroleum. In 1956, she joined a team of employees at Empire Petroleum and started the Denver deHaas Asphalt Company. She sold her interest in the early 1960s, but continued to work there until she retired in 1984, at the age of 69.
