Elva Jean Latas
Funeral for Elva Jean Latas, 76, of Larned, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned, with the Rev. Charles Grant officiating. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery.
Mrs. Latas died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at the Healthcare and Living Center in Larned.
She was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Pawnee County, the daughter of Preston S. and Lora Hazel (Pate) Blackburn.
A longtime resident of Larned, she had been a school teacher at Frankville School in Ness County and at Zook for three years, at Radium for eight years and in Pawnee Rock for 30 years.
Mrs. Latas attended the Methodist Church, and was a member of the Fort Larned Belles, the Tertulia Club and the Retired Teachers Association. With traveling as one of her hobbies, she had been to Europe and to several World Fairs.
On Dec. 24, 1952, she married Arlie Eugene Latas at Syracuse. He died Nov. 8, 1982. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Raymond, Joe, Wayne, Keith and Olsa Lee; and two nephews.
Survivors include two nieces, Belva Rosenau, Garden City, and Bonnie Gregory, Wichita; eight great-nieces and nephews; and three great-great-nieces.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Rozel, in care of the funeral home, Box 124, Larned, KS 67550-0124.
George Frick
George Frick, 91, of Wheeler, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
He was born June 20, 1910, near Loveland, Colo., to George Sr. and Anna Elizabeth (Christel) Frick, the third of 10 children. He was baptized Aug. 14, 1910, at First Congregational Church in Loveland, attended schools in and around Loveland, and was confirmed in the Congregational Church on April 10, 1927.
Mr. Frick was employed as a farm laborer for five years around the Loveland area. He married Helen Schauer on Aug. 7, 1932, at Loveland. They moved to Cheyenne County in March 1933, and had lived and farmed north of Wheeler until ill health required them to move in April 2001. He enjoyed farming, especially seeing the crops grow and harvest time. He also enjoyed livestock and had cattle until the last few years.
Mr. Frick was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church. His hobbies included traveling, gardening, genealogy and collecting caps, having more than 400 in his collection. He also enjoyed reading and visiting with friends.
In addition to his wife of Garden City, he is survived by a daughter, Verlene Kunz, Garden City; a granddaughter; a grandson; a great-grandson; and two sisters, Lydia Boxberger, Longmont, Colo., and Eleanor Rogers, Chula Vista, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jacob; and six sisters, Marie Sterkel, Lottie Kiehn, Sarah Jett, Esther Brungardt, Ruth Fystrom and Linda Brown.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church, St. Francis. Officiant will be the Rev. Stanley Lillich, Mr. Frick's great-nephew.
Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church in St. Francis or St. Catherine's Hospice Services in Garden City, in care of Knadels Funeral Home in St. Francis or Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
Esther Evers Mai
Esther Evers Mai, 91, a former Garden City resident, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Atriums Retirement Center in Overland Park. She had resided in Overland Park for five years.
She was born Aug. 20, 1909, in Otoe County, Neb., the daughter of Dietrick and Eda (Jagnow) Evers. She graduated from Garden City High School and Dague Business College in Wichita.
She worked for Swift & Company before marrying Pete Mai on April 8, 1935, at Garden City. They then had farming and ranching interests in southwestern Finney County. He died Sept. 17, 1977. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Freda Schroeder; and three brothers, John, Ernest and Alvin Evers.
Mrs. Mai was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Garden City and an associate member of Faith Lutheran Church in Prairie Village.
She is survived by two daughters, Judy Colebank, Prairie Village, and Betty Byer, Stafford; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or Faith Lutheran Church, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Stanley S. Grimsley
Stanley S. Grimsley, 63, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Sunday, July 1, 2001.
He was born Nov. 18, 1937, at Liberal, the son of James F. and Marie J. (Brooks) Grimsley.
A retired master chief aviation electrician, he served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years and also served during the Vietnam War. He retired recently from Lockheed Martin Systems Support and Training Services as a NAESU coordinator and a quality assurance inspector. During his retirement, he attended the Tidewater Community College Culinary Arts Program and enjoyed cooking for his family and friends.
On July 14, 1967, he married Denyce Davis of Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Guy Allen, Virginia Beach, and Gus Andrew, Roanoke, Va.; his mother, Satanta; two brothers, Larry J., Hays, and Micheal J., Garden City; and five sisters, Nancy Keihl, Shelburn, Wash., Mary Oliver, Satanta, Karen Moore, Bonny Lake, Wash., Janice Turrentine, Deerfield, and Sherri Fortin, Lakin. He was preceded in death by his father.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel in Virginia Beach. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors conducted.

Mary Elaine Wiebe
SCOTT CITY - Mary Elaine Wiebe, 55, Chanute, died Friday, July 6, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Dec. 25, 1945, at Scott City, the daughter of George and Mary Ellen (Fenton) Bennett. Growing up in Scott City, she attended schools there, graduated from high school in 1962, and attended junior college in Scott City and Chanute.
On May 7, 1965, she married Jesse L. Wiebe in Raton, N.M., and they moved to southeast Kansas in the fall of 1967. He died Sept. 17, 1991. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Blaw; and her parents.
Survivors include her children, Clifford Wiebe and Jeana Morris, both of Humboldt, and John Wiebe, Chanute; a grandson; five brothers, Ralph, Harold, Robert, James and Terry Bennett; and two sisters, Marjorie Bennett and Catherine Gregg.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is planned for 7 p.m. Monday at the Wesleyan Church, Chanute.
Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel, Chanute, is in charge of arrangements.
Forrest Lee "Bud" Smith
SYRACUSE - Forrest Lee "Bud" Smith, 81, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.
He was born Oct. 13, 1919, in Kingman County, the son of Kenneth John and Lillie Agnes (Schonlau) Smith. He attended Mount Pleasant School near Kingman.
He moved to the Coolidge area in 1939. On March 1, 1941, he married Helen Margaret "Margie" Gerard at Kingman. They lived and farmed north of Coolidge until their retirement. In June 1998, they moved to Syracuse. She died Oct. 8, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marrion Smith; and a granddaughter.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Towner (Colo.) Lions Club and Coolidge IOOF, an active member of the Coolidge Alumni and Friends, and was a 4-H leader and avid supporter of the 4-H program. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends, doing puzzles, big game hunting, and being involved with the community.
Survivors include two sons, John Smith, Olympia, Wash., and Forrest L. "Bud" Smith Jr., Coolidge; nine daughters, Mary Jane Malmgren, Des Moines, Iowa, Sally McLaughlin and Carol Hatcher, both of Kansas City, Jean Frye, Tampa, Fla., Rose Cook, Garden City, Patty LeCompte, Tucson, Ariz., Kathy Michel, Hartshorn, Mo., Cynthia "Cindy" Smith, Stratton, Colo., and Karen McLaughlin, Belton, Mo.; a brother, Joe Smith, Pretty Prairie; a sister, Edith Denison, Kingman; a brother-in-law; three sisters-in-law; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Coolidge High School Gym, with the Rev. Mike Lewis officiating. Graveside committal service will follow in Coolidge Cemetery. The family will then return to the gym for lunch.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MDT today through Friday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. The family will gather at the Sunflower Square, 805 N. Sumner St. in Syracuse, from 2 to 6 p.m. MDT Friday to greet friends.

Earl McMenomy
Vigil service for Earl McMenomy, 66, will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. McMenomy died Monday, July 9, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Dec. 11, 1934, at Fort Scott, the son of Melvin E. and Gladys Pearl (Osborn) McMenomy. He attended his first eight years of school in Fort Scott before moving to Garden City. The family moved to Tulsa, Okla., for a short time before returning to Garden City where he graduated from Garden City High School.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he moved to Tulsa for a number of years. He returned to Garden City where he worked as a bookkeeper for Appelhans Oil Co., and later as a night clerk at the Continental Inn.
Mr. McMenomy was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed reading and he especially enjoyed being involved with the activities of the church.
He is survived by three sisters, Doris Warner and Earlene Appelhans, both of Garden City, and Jean Allen, Tulsa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
