Mary Joanne Westerhaus
Mary Joanne Westerhaus, 48, of Houston, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Texas Medical Center in Houston.
She was born March 23, 1953, at Hutchinson, the daughter of John J. and Cathryn (Young) Westerhaus Sr.
She grew up in Garden City, attended grade school through high school here and then attended Garden City Community College where she was elected to Who's Who in American Junior Colleges. She then transferred to Emporia State University where she received a bachelor's degree in 1975. In 1978, she received a master's degree in biological oceanography from Texas A & M University at College Station, Texas.
For the last years of her life, she had been employed by the City of Houston Parks and Wildlife as assistant specifications analyst. She was a member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church at Houston and Chi Omega sorority. She enjoyed playing the piano, the arts and reading.
Survivors include her mother, Garden City; a brother, John J. Westerhaus, Dallas; an uncle; and an aunt. She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Larry Steadman officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Texas Medical Center of Houston, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Larry Obholz Sr.
LAKIN - Funeral for Larry Obholz Sr., 60, of Dallas and formerly of Liberal, was May 29 in Dallas.
He died Saturday, May 26, 2001.
Born Nov. 13, 1940, at Dodge City, he was the son of Jack and Geraldine Obholz.
Mr. Obholz was the owner and operator of Obholz Meat, was in partnership with C&O Rathole, and most recently was with Air Supply at Dallas.
On May 9, 1957, he married Patricia J. Jacobs. She survives. He is also survived by four children, Debbie Wallis, Richardson, Texas, Pam Obholz, Ruidiso, N.M., Larry Obholz Jr., Liberal, and Vicki Rine, Carrollton, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and five brothers and sisters, Janice Caldwell, Lakin, Jamey Obholz, John Obholz and Kathy Allen, all of Liberal, and Gary Bruce Obholz, Wichita.
Eastgate Funeral Home, Garland, Texas, was in charge of arrangements.
Lena (Jantz) Wedel
COPELAND - Lena (Jantz) Wedel, 92, of Copeland, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident since 1993.
She was born July 28, 1908, in Hamilton County, the daughter of Henry M. and Eva (Unruh) Jantz.
On Jan. 14, 1931, she married Orlan J. Wedel in McPherson County. They moved from McPherson County to the Copeland community in 1936.
Mrs. Wedel was a member of Salem Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Copeland.
Survivors include two sons, Delton, Detroit, Texas, and Lynn, Murray, Ky.; three daughters, Dorothy Yost and Lorraine Valdez, both of Copeland, and Eileen Nightingale, Youngton, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Marlin; a grandson; four sisters, Mamie Nightingale, Martha Unruh, Lenora Harms and Viola Helm; and five brothers, Edwin, Leland, Leon, Clement and Lewvirn.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland. Verle Yost, Roger Yost and Cyrus Wedel, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery, Copeland.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
Cleo E. Scriven
Funeral for Cleo E. Scriven, 87, a longtime resident of southeast Colorado and Lamar, Colo., was 2 p.m. May 26 at Lamar Christian Church. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Lamar.
Mrs. Scriven died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Prowers Medical Center in Lamar.
She was born March 31, 1914, at Greensburg, and moved with her family to a farm southeast of Lamar in 1915.
On Nov. 19, 1934, she married Joseph M. Scriven at Lamar.
She is survived by her husband of Sandhaven Nursing Home, Lamar; five sons and one daughter, Lester Scriven and Allen Scriven, both of Lamar, Ileen Scriven, Irving, Texas, Cleon Scriven of Dallas, Daniel Scriven, Las Animas, Colo., and Dee Wayne Scriven, Garden City; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Iona (Gamble) Steadman; an infant granddaughter, Pamela Dawn Scriven; a sister, Elsie Koch; and two brothers, Melvin Steadman and Harlow Steadman.

Gladys Magana
Vigil service for Gladys Magana, 22, will be 7 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by Spanish rosary. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Revs. James E. Baker and Carlos Garcia-Pena, S.J. officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
She died Friday, June 1, 2001, from injuries suffered in a fire at her home at 2224 W. Kansas Ave., No. 3, in Garden City, which also took the lives of her two sons, Saul David and Jesus Magana, and a brother, Ricardo Barragan.
Born Nov. 8, 1978, at Tulare, Calif., she was the daughter of Eduardo Sotelo and Lidia Lopez. The family moved to Garden City in 1981 and she attended Alta Brown and Victor Ornelas elementary schools and St. Mary Catholic School.
In May 1997, she married David Magana at Garden City.
She received her GED from Flinthill Job Corp in Manhattan in January 2001. She was employed as a certified nurse assistant at Sitters and More, and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed cooking, dancing and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her mother, Lidia Sotelo-Lopez, of the home; her father, Milwaukee, Wis.; a brother, Saul Sotelo-Lopez, of the home; her grandparents, Adelina Lopez, Garden City, and Luis and Josefina (Valencia) Sotelo, Michocan, Mexico; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Ruben Lopez.

Saul David Magana

Born May 19, 1996, at Garden City, he was the son of David and Gladys (Sotelo) Magana. The family lived in Sioux City, Iowa, for about a year before returning to Garden City in 1999. He attended preschool in Manhattan while his mother attended the Flinthill Job Corp. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
He is survived by his father, Mexico; his grandparents, Lidia Sotelo-Lopez, Garden City, Eduardo Sotelo, Milwaukee, Wis., and Jesus and Socorro Magana, Jalisco, Mexico; his great-grandparents, Adelina Lopez, Garden City, and Trinidad Alvarez and Maria Cardenas, Jalisco; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Ruben Lopez.
