Leo M. Metzen
GARDEN PLAIN - Rosary for Leo M. Metzen of Garden Plain will be at 7:30 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Garden Plain. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Reinkemeyer officiating. Burial will be at St. Anthony Cemetery.
Mr. Metzen, 90, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Wichita.
He was born Sept. 12, 1910, at St. Marks, the son of Joseph J. and Anna (Roths) Metzen. He was a farmer and stockman and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He married Agnes C. Bayer on June 6, 1939, at Wichita.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Melvin N. Metzen of Scott City; a daughter, Frances Treichel, Alton, Ill.; a brother, Eugene Metzen, Mayfield; three sisters, Bertha Nollenberger, Medford, Okla., Mildred Zoglmann, Garden Plain, and Bernetta Berndsen, Douglass; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends may call until 6 tonight. Arrangements are being handled by Wulf-Ast Mortuary, Garden Plain.
Bonnie Lucile Nickle
NEVADA, Mo. - Bonnie Lucile Nickle, 81, Nevada, Mo., died June 7, 2001, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada.
Mrs. Nickle was born on June 9, 1919, at Dighton, the daughter of John Alfred and Myrtle Cricket (Myers) Holmes.
She graduated from Dighton High School and Fort Hays State College. She was a schoolteacher, having taught at various schools in Kansas including Dighton, Cunningham, Hardtner and Montezuma.
After her retirement, she worked as a secretary for Streiff Chiropractic in Liberal and gave private piano lessons. She was a Liberal resident until 1994 when she moved to Nevada. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Mrs. Nickle is survived by three daughters, Janet Largent, Garden City, Frances West, Nevada, and Nancy Schupman, Springfield, Colo.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Leatha Bradstreet; and a brother, John A. Holmes.
She was cremated and the ashes returned to Dighton for burial.
A memorial service will be June 17 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Nevada, with George Brown presiding. Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
Arthur Dean "Bud" Fillpot
SATANTA - Arthur Dean "Bud" Fillpot, 61, Satanta, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
He was born June 6, 1940, at Satanta, the son of Floyd and Thelma V. (Snow) Fillpot.
He married Louisa Hoyt.
He worked for the Haskell County Road Department as a maintainer operator.
He loved his family and grandkids and going to family reunions. His hobbies were working part-time as a handyman. In his early life, he loved to hunt. He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include: one son, Bob of Rolla; four daughters, Connie Fillpot, Garden City, Karen York, Satanta, Michelle Fillpot, Stillwater, Okla., and Jennifer Green, El Reno, Okla.; a brother, Dennis of North Carolina; five sisters, Sue Weber, Satanta, Virginia Collins, Holland, Mich., Mary Ann Donaldson, Marfa, Texas, Judy Hobbs, Springfield, Mo., and Helen Brown, Tahlequah, Okla.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many young people who considered Bud as their honorary uncle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Bonnie Fillpot; four brothers, Charles, Melvin, Robert and Darrell Fillpot.
A memorial has been established for Diabetes research. Memorials may be left at the Shopping Stop True Value, Satanta, or mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Ray Tweed presiding. Burial will be in the Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Clifford Stapleton
SUBLETTE - Clifford Stapleton, 78, Sublette, died early Thursday morning, June 7, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center, Liberal.
Born on Feb. 27, 1923, in his parents' Seward County home, he was the son of Ralph B. and Myrtle (Dawson) Stapleton.
He married Alda Mae Webb on May 27, 1945, at her parents home in Stevens County.
Mr. Stapleton came to Haskell County when he was 3 1/2 years old. He was a farmer and truck driver. He never met a stranger and enjoyed going to Hoskinson Implement and Sublette Co-op for coffee. He enjoyed RV camping, flying airplanes and fishing. He was a scout leader and took the group to the Blackhills, Spanish Peaks and Yellowstone. He enjoyed driving a cattle truck cross country. He went to Washington D.C. during the Ag movement. He drove an activity bus for the Sublette High School. He enjoyed eating out at local cafe's and visiting.
He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Sublette, American Ag Association, Sandhill Racing Association in Garden City, and was a former member of the Flying Farmers.
Survivors include his wife, Alda Mae Stapleton of Sublette; four sons, Roy Van, Liberal, Randall, Haysville, Rodney, Mullinville and Rick, Dodge City; a daughter, Rita Andsager, Hutchinson; two sisters, Francis Trahern, Wichita, and Dorothy Lynch, Hugoton; a sister-in-law, Sarah Stapleton, Sublette; 10 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold Stapleton; and a sister, Fern Axton.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene, Sublette, with the Revs. William Thomas and Andy Shimkos presiding. Burial will be in the Banner Cemetery
in Sublette.
Friends may call until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Elsie Opal Schmidt
HUGOTON - Elsie Opal Schmidt, 95, Hugoton, died Thursday, June 7, 2001.
Mrs. Schmidt was born on July 19, 1905, at Celina, Tenn., the daughter of Bob and Sarah (Conkin) Rich. She moved with her family to Fort Gibson, Okla., soon after her birth, and then to Kansas.
She attended Banner School through seventh grade and graduated from Tyrone High School in 1923 as valedictorian of her class. A favorite school memory was playing guard on a championship basketball team.
She married Henry B. Schmidt on Sept. 9, 1923, at Hugoton. He died in 1981.
Mrs. Schmidt was a member of the Hugoton United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and maintained her Christian commitment throughout her life.
Survivors include four sons, James and Gerald, both of rural Hugoton, Richard, Duncan, Okla., and Gary, Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Nel Holmes presiding. Burial will be at the Hugoton Cemetery
under the direction of Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.
