Fred H. Newberry Jr.

Fred H. Newberry Jr., 81, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 29, 1920, at Ingalls, to Fred H. Sr. and Eda S. (Templeton) Newberry, and attended schools there. The family moved to Kingman for a short time. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1940 to 1946, he moved to Garden City.

Mr. Newberry worked as an elevator operator for the Garden City Co-op, retiring in 1985. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church, and enjoyed handyman work, gardening and yard work.

On Nov. 17, 1952, he married Billie Cunningham at Clayton, N.M. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Larry David Newberry, Hays, Fred H. Newberry III, Garden City, and Leslie Duane Newberry, Independence; three daughters, Kaylinn A. Stalford, East Stroudsburg, Pa., Brenda J. Laudick and Laura M. Thomason, both of Lakin; a brother, LeVon Newberry, Derby; two sisters, Ellen Haynes, Riverside, Calif., and Lyla Chappell, Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Lee Dale Newberry; a granddaughter; three brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Kent Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Orley V. Gleason

Funeral for Orley V. Gleason, 86, a longtime Goodland resident, will be 10:30 a.m. MT Thursday at First Christian Church, Goodland, with the Rev. Loren Strait officiating. Burial will follow in Goodland Cemetery.

Mr. Gleason died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Goodland Regional Medical Center where he had been a patient since Friday.

He was born Jan. 20, 1915, at Florence, the son of O.V. and Ola (Fitch) Gleason. When he was 3, the family moved from Florence to Bristol, Colo., traveling by covered wagon for 30 days. He grew up in the area of Lamar, Colo., graduating from Lamar Union High School in 1932.

When he was 17, he started working for Marx Master Bakeries and later worked for numerous bakeries throughout his life, owning a bakery in Englewood, Colo., working in a bakery in Victorville, Calif., and eventually buying the High Plains Bakery in Goodland in 1964 and running it until its closing in 1976.

After working for Great Western Sugar Co. for five years, he found his way back to making and decorating cakes, which he did for another 10 years at his home in Goodland. A well-known baker, he was in the business for more than 60 years.

Mr. Gleason was a member of First Christian Church of Goodland where he was a board member and deacon, and received an honorary deacon emeritus pin. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, singing songs and laughing with all at family gatherings.

In 1935, he married his first wife with whom he had a son, Ralph.

He met Theola F. "Frankie" Hosler at Victorville and the two moved to Lamar. After marrying on Aug. 20, 1952, at Raton, N.M., they had two children, Bruce and Linda. She died Sept. 22, 1994. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Floyd L. Osban and Roy W. Osban; a sister, Chloe M. Osban; and a grandson.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Gleason, Goodland, and Ralph Gleason, Iowa Park, Texas; a daughter, Linda Murray, Garden City; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 MT tonight at Koons Chapel, Goodland, and at the church before the service. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 211 N. Main St., Goodland, KS 67735-1555.

Justice Wayne Griffin

WICHITA - Funeral service for Justice Wayne Griffin, 19 month old son of Troy and Jill Griffin will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Evangelical Free Church, Wichita.

Justice Wayne Griffin died Monday, June 11, 2001. He was born Oct. 21, 1999, at Wichita.

Other survivors include a sister, Macey; grandparents, Richard and Ava Morrison, Wichita, Morris and Debbie Griffin, Andover, Leon and Martha Boor, Garden City, and Jim Minnis, Canon City, Colo.; and three aunts, Angela Stone of Garden City and Leah Davis and Wendy Wilson, both of Wichita.

Justice was preceded in death by an uncle, Tab Gribble.

Visitation with the family will be until 8 tonight at Downing and Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, Wichita.

A memorial has been established with the Justice Griffin Memorial Fund in care of Cessna Employees Credit Union, P.O. Box 7704, Wichita, KS 67277-7704.

Fermin Madera

Vigil service for Fermin Madera, 26, of Garden City, will be 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Carlos Garcia-Pena officiating. Private family burial will take place later in Minillas, Jalisco, Mexico.

Mr. Madera died Monday, June 11, 2001, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Copeland in Gray County.

He was born Aug. 14, 1974, at Mezquitic, Jalisco, Mexico, to Luis Miguel and Concepcion (Guzman) Madera, and grew up in Mexico.

A Garden City resident since 1997, he worked for Smith Sand Co. and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing and watching soccer.

On April 28, 1999, he married Amparo Cabral in Mexico. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Edgar Madera, of the home; his parents, Mexico; two brothers, Jose Manuel Madera and Alvaro Madera, both of Garden City; and two sisters, Celia Madera, Mexico, and Laticia Madera, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Fermin Madera Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Richard E. Wing

Richard E. Wing, 61, Garden City, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

Mr. Wing was born Nov. 7, 1939, at Garden City, the son of Earl and Minnie (Wittman) Wing. He was a self-employed contractor.

He lived most of his life in Garden City, and served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. He married Susan Miller on Feb. 12, 1994, at Garden City.

He enjoyed hunting, riding motorcycles and classic cars. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, High Plains Archery Club and Sand and Sage Pistol Club.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter Sonya Uthe of Garden City; two stepdaughters, Dana Miller, Baltimore, and Stacey Miller, Hays; his mother of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother Dennis Wing of Deckers, Colo.; a sister, Louise Fight, Ft. Smith, Ark.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. James E. Baker presiding. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St., Garden City, KS 67846.

Luis H. Garcia

Funeral service for Luis H. Garcia will be at 7:30 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Carlos Garcia-Pena presiding. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Garcia, 88, Garden City, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

He was born Sept. 30, 1912, at Mendoza, Texas, the son of Jorge and Elijia (Guiterrez) Garcia.

He was married to Cipriana T. Trevino in 1943 at McKinney, Texas.

Mr. Garcia grew up in Texas and farmed in Texas before moving to Garden City in 1963. He worked as the janitor at City Hall in Garden City. After he retired, he worked part time as a janitor at the Trailways Bus Depot.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, pets and birds, and his family activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers, five sisters and one great-grandson.

Survivors include a daughter, Juanita Gonzalez of Garden City, a son, Phillip Garcia of Grand Junction, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
