Florence V. Smith
Funeral for Florence V. Smith, 92, of Emporia, was 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Church, Emporia, with the Rev. Gary Gooszen officiating. Burial was in Patio Garden Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.
Mrs. Smith died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Newman Memorial County Hospital in Emporia.
She was born Jan. 17, 1909, in rural Overbrook, the daughter of Willard B. and Wilda Van Horn.
On Feb. 17, 1930, she married E.W. Smith at Enid, Okla. They operated the Daily Reminder, a newspaper they founded in 1933, for 42 years in Emporia, retiring in 1975.
Mrs. Smith was a member of First Congregational Church, where she belonged to the Morse-Storrs Circle and the Congregational Womens Fellowship. She was also a member of the Zenith Study Club and Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Van Smith, Garden City; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Mary Virginia Buller.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.
Frances Leticia Toledo Gonzalez
Funeral for Frances Leticia Toledo Gonzalez, 48, of Garden City, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the service conducted by the Garden City congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Gonzalez died Friday, June 15, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Oct. 4, 1952, in Mexico, Distrito Federal, the daughter of Raul Ignacio Toledo and Esperanzita Cossio.
A Garden City resident since 1976, moving from Ulysses where she had lived for four years, she was a homemaker and a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
On May 5, 1987, she married Geronimo Gonzalez at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by three sons, Alex Strampher, Kearney, Neb., Geronimo Gonzalez Jr. and Thomas Gonzalez, both of the home; two daughters, Mary Strampher and Carla Toledo, both of Garden City; a brother, Gerado Toledo, Mexico; two sisters, Cynthia Gonzalez, Garden City, and Maria Elena Toledo, Mexico; three grandchildren; and several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Esperanza; and two brothers.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials to the Frances Gonzalez Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Mohamed Samy
Muslim burial and funeral for Mohamed Samy, 69, of Kuwait, will take place Tuesday in Cairo, Egypt.
Mr. Samy died Saturday, June 16, 2001, in Kuwait City, Kuwait.
He was born Feb. 28, 1932, at Alexandria, Egypt.
Mr. Samy was the Secretary of Ministry of Public Health for the Kuwait National Government.
He is survived by his wife, Hamida Algezar Samy, of the home; a son, Amro M. Samy, who is the general manager of Southwind in Garden City; and a grandson of Augusta.

June C. DeFreese
June C. DeFreese, 76, of Garden City, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born May 20, 1925, at Ness City, the daughter of Chester L. and Opal C. (Martin) Rose. She attended schools in Pierceville and Garden City.
In 1957, she returned to Garden City after living in Seattle. She worked as a clerk at Walls IGA here for 35 years and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church of Garden City. Her special interests were sewing, crocheting, reading and cooking.
On April 4, 1963, she married Arlie A. DeFreese at Lakin. He survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Virginia Wolford, Chatsworth, Calif.; two sons, Robert Hallmark, Everett, Wash., and Harold Hallmark, Garden City; a stepson, Arlie A. DeFreese Jr., Garden City; a brother, Carl Rose, Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Maxine Thornton, Laguna Beach, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and two brothers.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fellowship Baptist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Michael McVey officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the family there from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials are suggested to the church or the American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Roy Hampson
DIGHTON - Roy Hampson, 94, of Dighton, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Lane County Long Term Care Unit in Dighton.
He was born Dec. 19, 1906, in Lane County, the son of Ralph and Mary Margaret (Page) Hampson.
A lifetime resident of Lane County, he was a farmer and stockman. His special interests were woodworking, fishing, pheasant hunting, and hunting for and polishing rocks.
On Jan. 4, 1933, he married Alice Catherine Melia at Ashland. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Alvin Hampson, Nikiski, Alaska; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Floyd Hampson and Ralph Hampson; and one grandchild.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the church or the J.O.Y. Center, both in care of the funeral home.
Clyde C. Smith
CIMARRON - Funeral for Clyde C. Smith, 89, of Cimarron, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Church of the Nazarene, Cimarron, with the Rev. James Bond officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Trinity Manor Nursing Home, Dodge City, where he had been a resident.
He was born April 22, 1912, in Stafford County, the son of Frank Edner and Effie D. (Blackburn) Smith. His childhood and school days were spent in the Kansas communities of Stafford and Bucklin and in Hooker, Okla.
While a manager of Kroger Grocery at Newton, he met Esther V. Goodale. They were married Dec. 25, 1938, at Coldwater and moved from Newton to Finney County, near Kalvesta, in 1939.
Mr. Smith was a farmer and stockman who took great pride in his work and loved farming. He had farmed and fed cattle near Kalvesta since 1940. In 1967, he pioneered pivot sprinkler irrigation near Cimarron in Gray County. In his retiring years, he farmed and had a cattle herd at Detroit, Texas. He had been a member of World Wide Church of God since 1952.
Survivors include his wife, Cimarron; two sons, Thomas A. Smith, Ingalls, and John P. Smith, Cimarron; four daughters, Peggy Toland, Mary Hoskinson and Nancy Davis, all of Cimarron, and Helen Shriver, Mountainburg, Ark.; three brothers, Ralph W. Smith, Kalvesta, Stanton F. Smith and Laverne E. Smith, both of Kingsland, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, James C. Smith, Cecil B. Smith, Glenn T. Smith, Edner B. Smith, John B. Smith and Paul O. Smith; and two sisters, Mildred Hopkins and Lula Hanson.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Montezuma Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church in Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Manor Adult Care Center at Dodge City or the Shepherd Center of Cimarron, both in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
Mary Kathleen Seals
SYRACUSE - Funeral Mass for Mary Kathleen Seals, 76, of Aurora, Colo., will be 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Aurora. Graveside service, with open casket viewing, will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Helms officiating.
Mrs. Seals died of cancer Friday, June 15, 2001, at her home in Aurora.
She was born Sept. 24, 1924, at Flagstaff, Ariz., the daughter of David and Beth (Hardin) O'Brien. She graduated from Flagstaff High School in 1942 and went on to graduate from Phoenix Nursing College to become a registered nurse.
On April 18, 1946, she married Lt. Col. Walter J. Seals, previously of the Coolidge area, at Roswell Air Force Base in New Mexico. Prior to moving to Aurora, she and her husband traveled the world with the military.
After her retirement, Mrs. Seals did volunteer work for the Catholic Community Charities, as well as other charity work. She as an avid gardener, pianist and fan of the Colorado Rockies baseball team and loved nursing.
Her husband died Sept. 17, 1991. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and two daughters, Marye Elizabeth Seals, in 1988, and Kathleen Anne Seals, in 1956.
Survivors include three sons, David Seals, Rapid City, S.D., Steven Seals, Wichita, and James D. Seals, Aurora; two daughters, Jacqueline Jones, Aurora, and Patricia O'Brien, Canyon City, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a niece, Joyce Coleman of Coolidge.
