Gary Lynn Ochs
ULYSSES - Former longtime Ulysses resident Gary Lynn Ochs, 45, of Moriarty, N.M., died Monday, June 18, 2001, on a well drilling job in Edgwood, N.M.
He was born Jan. 31, 1956, at Lakin, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ochs.
Mr. Ochs worked on irrigation wells and home wells around Ulysses until moving to Moriarty in 1999. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ulysses and became a member of First Baptist Church of Moriarty after moving there. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, liked to watch football, and enjoyed working and being with people.
He is survived by a daughter, Gara Lee, Lecoma, Mo.; three grandchildren; a brother, Rick Lee, Hobbs, N.M.; and two sisters, Tina Rule, Clay Center, and Rachael Ochs. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Dennis Mason officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses, and from 10:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the family, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
Rea J. "June" Arwine
Funeral for Rea J. "June" Arwine, 61, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Southern Baptist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Arwine died Monday, June 18, 2001, at her home in Garden City.
She was born Aug. 26, 1939, at Enid, Okla., the daughter of Shelby H. and Frances Maxine (Stites) Bourne. The family moved to Texas City, Texas, when she was a child. She lived in various places before moving to Garden City in 1952. She graduated from Garden City High School in 1958.
Mrs. Arwine was a cook at Herb's Carry Out for 18 years, retiring in 1999. She enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking, reading and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
On July 20, 1962, she married Joseph D. Arwine at Albuquerque, N.M. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Joseph D. Arwine II, Waynesville, N.C., and Robert R. Arwine, Garden City; two daughters, Michelle Lee Silk, Bella Vista, Ark., and Deanna Sue Hill, Bennington; a brother, William O. "Bill" Bourne, Cleveland, Texas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Harold S. Stickney
Vigil service for Harold S. Stickney, 94, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by the church rosary and the Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with Bishop Ronald Gilmore and the Rev. Joseph Bahr as co-celebrants. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Stickney died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 19, 1907, on a farm in Barton County, the son of Halsey and Julia (Sullivan) Stickney. He graduated from Hoisington High School in 1925.
Mr. Stickney was a farmer, a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and was a plumbing and electrical contractor. He had lived in Garden City since 1963, moving from Claflin.
A current member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, he was a permanent deacon for the Dodge City Diocese and served at St. Mary's Catholic Church where he officiated at many marriages, baptisms and other services.
He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus having served as Grand Knight in the Hoisington, Claflin and Garden City councils. He was a founding member of the Senior Center of Finney County and of the Emmaus House where he served on the board of directors from its inception until June 2000.
A longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Vista Tax Aid, Birthright and Lifeline, he also served as a delegate to the Silver Haired Legislature and was the author of many letters to the editor on various causes.
On Feb. 21, 1928, he married Florence E. Hickey at Olmitz. She survives. He is also survived by five daughters, Patricia Van Sickel, Topeka, Marilyn Smith, San Diego, Kathleen McMillan, Garden City, Lois Kimminau, Tucson, Ariz., and Elizabeth Parker, Douglasville, Ga.; four sons, Charles Stickney, Colorado Springs, Colo., Richard Stickney, Garden City, Terrence Stickney, Tribune, and Michael Stickney, Stratford, Conn.; two sisters, Mary Strand, Wisconsin, and Lucille Oliver, Virginia; a brother, Arthur Stickney, California; 52 grandchildren; 108 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Stickney; four brothers; and one sister.
Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the Emmaus House, St. Mary School Endowment Fund or St. Dominic School Endowment Fund, all in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Sadie Becker
SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Sadie Becker, 90, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Mennonite Church, Pence. Franklin Koehn, minister, will officiate. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Lone Tree Church Cemetery, Galva.
Mrs. Becker died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born April 20, 1911, at Galva, the daughter of John and Eva Koehn.
A resident of the Monument and Marienthal areas from 1949 until moving to Moundridge in 1984, she moved to Scott City in March 2001. She was a homemaker and belonged to the Church Of God in Christ Mennonite, Scott City.
On Feb. 14, 1931, she married Marvin Clayton Becker at Galva. He died June 10, 1991, at Moundridge. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Survivors include two sons, Vernon D. Becker, Eugene, Ore., and Eldon L. Becker, Westminster, Colo.; three daughters, Roselyn M. Bry, Eagle, Colo., Grace N. Martens, Marienthal, and Loretta J. Schneider, Midland, Texas; four sisters, Gladys Wenger, Moundridge, Hazel Unruh, Versailles, Mo., Rose Yost and Evelyn Dyck, both of Hesston; 16 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Moundridge Manor, in care of the funeral home.
Nancy Lee Fry
LEOTI - Nancy Lee Fry, 77, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was born July 18, 1923, at Garden City, the daughter of George Robert and Edith Ellen (Clark) Sharp.
A Leoti resident since 1973, moving from Kinsley, she was the registrar of deeds in Wichita County from 1973 until her retirement in December 2000.
Mrs. Fry was a member of the United Methodist Church and the VFW Auxiliary, both at Leoti.
On March 18, 1943, she married Charles Fry at Denver. He died Nov. 12, 1986, at Leoti.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Robert Fry, Hutchinson, and Kenneth Wayne Fry, Ford; a daughter, Donna Fry, Colorado Springs; a brother, George Robert "Bud" Sharp Jr., Bethel Park, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Don Koehn officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to Pikes Peak Hospice or the Leoti Emergency Medical Technicians, both in care of the funeral home.
Anthony F. "Tony" Geier
Anthony F. "Tony" Geier, 93, a longtime Garden City businessman, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 7, 1907, in Graf, Russia, the son of Peter and Katherine (Bach) Geier.
A Garden City resident since 1925, moving from Colorado, in 1936 he started Geier Electric which he operated until his retirement in 1989.
Mr. Geier was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a longtime member of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce which awarded him the 1995 Award of Merit certificate.
He was a lifetime member of the National Electrical Contractors Association, the Lions Club and the Elks Lodge, was an honorary member of the Finney County Senior Citizens Association, and belonged to the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.
A lover of music, Mr. Geier was an enthusiastic polka dancer and belonged to the Sunflower Polka Club of Hays, Polka of America and the Midwestern Polka Club of Wichita.
On Sept. 7, 1936, he married Josephine Lavenstein at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Larry Geier and Alan Geier, both of Garden City, and Dan Geier, Katy, Texas; four daughters, Sister Jolene Geier, Great Bend, Barbara Jean Schartz, Dodge City, Lola Wilson, Littlefield, Texas, and Katherine Rhodes, Wichita; two brothers, Florian Geier, Garden City, and Alex Geier, California; two sisters, Catherine Geier, Garden City, and Ann Herrman, LaCrosse; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Vigil service will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by the church rosary and the Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Carlos Garcia-Pena as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
