Ariana Lea DeLeon
ULYSSES - Ariana Lea DeLeon, the infant daughter of Alex and Lilia (Yvarra) DeLeon of Ulysses, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses. She was born earlier that day in Ulysses.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her siblings, Alex Jr., Aaron Nicholas and Allison Khandi DeLeon; and her grandparents, Oliver and Cruz DeLeon, Garden City, and Candido and Odelia Yvarra, Ulysses.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday in Ulysses Cemetery, with the Rev. Berry Durkee officiating.
Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, is in charge of arrangements.
Ralph E. Patterson
Funeral for Ralph E. Patterson, 84, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with Dr. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Patterson died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born April 14, 1917, at Byers, the son of Charles E. and Luella C. (Fleenor) Patterson.
A Garden City resident since 1945, moving from Sublette, he was a farmer and also worked with Butler Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1982.
Mr. Patterson was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
On Aug. 6, 1941, he married Virginia Irene Robinson at Little Rock, Ark. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Dale E. Patterson, and a daughter, Carolyn J. McLinn, both of Garden City; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lester.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or Boy Scout Troop No. 108, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Leona M. "Blondie" Dreiling
Daughters of Isabella rosary for Leona M. "Blondie" Dreiling, 83, of Las Vegas and formerly of Hays, will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, followed by parish vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, with the Rev. Michael Suchnicki officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.
Mrs. Dreiling died Friday, June 22, 2001, at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas.
She was born Aug. 27, 1917, at Victoria, the daughter of John and Catherine (Schmidtberger) Rupp.
She and her husband, Ed Dreiling, were longtime owners of the Coachman's Restaurant until 1972. He died May 31, 1974. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Clarence, Danny, Elmer and Edward Rupp; and two sisters, Albina and Albertina Rupp.
Mrs. Dreiling was a member of Daughters of Isabella and a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, both at Hays.
She is survived by two sons, Ed Dreiling, Las Vegas, and Dale Dreiling, Boise, Idaho; three daughters, Donna Wills, Las Vegas, Sandy Crookshanks, Tyler, Texas, and Vicki Hull, Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Linus Rupp, Bushton; five sisters, Irene Huff of Russell, O'linda Schantz, Colorado Springs, Colo., Sally Sullivan, Garden City, Alice Wasinger, Hutchinson, and Albertina Rome, Hays; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 20th and Pine, Hays, KS 67601.
Marjorie Mae "Marge" Whittington
Johnson CITY - Marjorie Mae "Marge" Whittington, 72, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at her home in Johnson City.
She was born March 31, 1929, at Johnson City, the daughter of Forrest O. "Foxy" and Emma Louise "Momo" Walker. A lifetime resident of Johnson City, she graduated from Johnson High School in 1947.
Mrs. Whittington had worked at Emery's Drug, Johnson State Bank, at the ASCS office for 32 years, Z's Clothes and most recently at the County Fair Restaurant.
For more than 45 years, she was involved with the Girl Scouts, serving as a board member for the Tumbleweed Girl Scout Council in Garden City, a was a current leader for the local Daisy Girl Scouts.
A lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Johnson City, she was a member of the UMW, received many awards for her church work with the children and played in the Bell Choir at the church.
For more than 50 years, she belonged to Rebekah Lodge, serving as past Noble Grand and treasurer for many years, and of the Futorum Club. She was vice-president of the Stanton County Hospital Auxiliary and served on the Stanton County Recreation Board. She enjoyed crafts, gardening, painting landscapes, animals, and time with her family.
On Aug. 29, 1948, she married Enid Whittington at Johnson City. He died Aug. 8, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her father.
She is survived by her mother, Johnson City; a son, Vance Whittington, Rye, Colo.; a daughter, Cindy Batterton, Manter; a brother, Forrest L. Walker, Johnson City; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. CDT Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. The service will be preceded by a flower card reading at 9 a.m. Graveside committal service will be in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City, followed by a family luncheon at the church.
Visitation hours at the church are from 4 to 6 CDT tonight for the family; friends and family may call from 6 to 8 tonight and 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. David L. Whitehurst
Vigil service for David L. Whitehurst, 56, will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Revs. Carlos Garcia-Pena and Gregory Legge as celebrants. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Whitehurst died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at his home in Garden City.
He was born May 15, 1945, at Long Beach, Calif., the son of Lynn Estean and Matilda (Werth) Whitehurst. The family moved to Garden City when he was 4. He attended St. Mary Catholic Church and graduated from Garden City High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy before returning to Garden City where he worked for Garden City Laundry, Kamen Supply and Stanion Wholesale before going to work for USD No. 457. He started with the school in 1973 and became head custodian. In 1981, he became the maintenance plumber.
Mr. Whitehurst was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed collecting Coke items and rocks, traveling, especially to California to see the beaches and ships, and playing cribbage, Scrabble and Yahtzee. He enjoyed woodworking and teaching the craft to his grandchildren. His last project was building an altar for his house blessing and later donating it to Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, Colo.
On Dec. 28, 1971, he married Betty Graeff at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by five daughters, Ann Michelle Whitehurst, Constance Marie Kells and Linda Ann Duvall, all of Garden City, Teresa Sue Shearmire, Springfield, Mo., and Rose Marie Whitehurst, Deerfield; three brothers, Ronald Whitehurst and Gary Whitehurst, both of Garden City, and Fred Whitehurst, Denver; three sisters, Mary Creeden and Sue Pearson, both of Garden City, and Coleen Rupp, Holcomb; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Ann Whitehurst.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the David L. Whitehurst Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Gilford C. Myers
Gilford C. Myers, 89, a former Garden City resident, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Granbury, Texas.
He was born Dec. 27, 1911, the son of Franklin and Mabel Myers. He grew up in Garden City and graduated from Garden City High School.
Mr. Myers owned several businesses in Dodge City, including Myers Ice Cream, Myers Nursery, Myers Boat and Bait, and Myers Mobile Home Park before moving to Fort Worth, Texas, and later to Granbury.
He was a member of the Lions Club at Dodge City and Lions International. He served as president and vice president of the Kansas Wildlife Federation.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma (Kramer) Myers; three sons, Evan Myers, Kansas City, Mo., Phil Myers, Granbury, and Ray Myers, Eldorado Hills, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Kurt.
Cremation has taken place. A private family service took place in Granbury, with a graveside service later in Acton (Texas) Cemetery.
