Clara Gilbert
LAKIN - Graveside service for Clara Gilbert, 98, was to be 11 this morning in Lakin Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating.
Mrs. Gilbert died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
Born Nov. 23, 1902, in Harrison County, W.Va., she was the daughter of Ellis and Rosa (Ford) Ashcroft.
She taught school in the 1920s in a one-room schoolhouse in West Virginia and had been a Lakin resident since 1949, moving from Rocky Ford, Colo.
A homemaker, Mrs. Gilbert had served as treasurer of the Kearny County Senior Center for 13 years.
She enjoyed playing cards and teaching her grandchildren how to play various card games.
She also liked traveling, camping and working in her yard, and doing needlework with an emphasis on cross-stitching and crocheting.
On June 6, 1931, she married Forrest I. Gilbert at LaJunta, Colo.
He died June 3, 1968, at Lakin.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Clellan Gilbert; a stepson, Boyd Gilbert; two brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include a son, Lowell Gilbert, Douglas, Wyo.; two daughters, Grace Johnson, Pueblo, Colo., and Helen Corbett, Garden City; two stepdaughters, Lorena Liebelt, Corcelles, Switzerland, and Ruth McDonald, Commerce, Ga.; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the Kearny County Senior Center, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.
Archie Smith
MONTEZUMA - Archie Smith, 76, of Montezuma, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Satanta District Hospital.
He was born Oct. 16, 1924, at Montezuma, the son of Henry X. and Minnie (Dirks) Smith.
A farmer, he was a member of the Soybean Club, an honorary member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and belonged to Synonon of California.
He had lived in Sublette for one year before moving into the Satanta Long Term Care Unit.
In 1944, he married Edna Viola Friesen at Montezuma.
She survives.
He is also survived by a son, L. Gene Smith, Garden City; a brother, David Smith, Montezuma; two sisters, Irene Koehn, Sublette, and Agnes Unruh, Montezuma; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sharlene Lynette Miller; three brothers, Dewey, John and Albert Smith; and two sisters, Lena Yost and Lizzie Koehn.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Church, Montezuma, with the Revs. Lyn Hansen and Ervey Unruh officiating.
Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery, Montezuma.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Montezuma Funeral Home.

Iva Merrill Nix Stanley
HUGOTON - Iva Merrill Nix Stanley, 79, of Hugoton, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Medicine Lodge.
She was born July 5, 1921, in Stevens County, the daughter of Austin and Ella (Landess) Florence.
On Nov. 28, 1953, she married Homer G. Nix. He died Feb. 4, 1991.
She married Charles M. Stanley on Aug. 8, 1992. He died June 19, 1997.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Tom, Ernest and Kenneth Florence; and two sisters, Alta Farmer and Bernice Cox.
A homemaker, Mrs. Stanley had worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., as an operator, until retiring in 1958.
She was a member of Assembly Of God Church, Hugoton.
She is survived by three daughters, Joyce Foulkrod and Rita Jean Kirk, both of Medicine Lodge, and Linda Ramey, Orlando, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Ramona Martinez, Liberal; two sisters, Eva Vollmer, Hugoton, and Bonnie Rusick, Pueblo, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Assembly Of God Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating.
Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Friday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.

Leon Eugene "Twitch" Smith
SCOTT CITY - Memorial service for Leon Eugene "Twitch" Smith, 84, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Camp Lakeside Chapel in Scott County, with the Rev. Jeff Arnold officiating.
Mr. Smith died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
He was born May 4, 1916, at Healy, the son of Paul Bliss and Myrtle Ruby (Nolte) Smith.
He graduated from Healy High School in 1934, and then worked as a truck driver.
After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he worked at a service station in Dighton and then became a self-employed painting contractor.
He later worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation.
He moved to Scott City, living at Scott State Park for 20 years before moving into Scott City.
Mr. Smith was a member of Community Christian Church and the VFW, both at Scott City.
His special interest was fishing and the activities around Scott State Park.
On Dec. 4, 1948, he married Eva M. Teeters in Benton County, Ark. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Paul Smith, Portland, Ore., and Eugene Smith, Scott City; a daughter, O'Della Kelley, Bothell, Wash.; three brothers, Guy Smith, Dighton, James Smith, Wichita, and Thayne Smith, Wagner, Okla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Fred, Marvin, Milo and Rod; and an infant sister.

Charles Addison Stimatze Sr.
SYRACUSE - Charles Addison Stimatze Sr., 87, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.
He was born Nov. 30, 1913, in Stafford County, the son of John and Jennie (Bowker) Stimatze.
A Byers resident from 1913 until moving to Syracuse in 1929, he attended school in rural Stafford County.
He had married Thelma Herren of Syracuse.
Mr. Stimatze worked for more than 30 years as a highway maintenance and heavy equipment operator for the Kansas Department of Transportation, retiring Nov. 16, 1976, and had also farmed.
He was a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and Elks Lodge.
He loved attending senior citizen dances and driving his pickup.
Survivors include two daughters, Jennie Beard, Gladstone, N.M., and Patricia Tope, Syracuse; two sons, Roy Stimatze, Pratt, and Charles Stimatze Jr., Syracuse; a nephew; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Conway, Melvin and Roy Stimatze; two sisters, Roena Rehmers and Wauneta Phillips; an infant sister; and twin great-grandsons.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. MDT Thursday in Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. Rod Collins officiating.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MDT today and Wednesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse.
