HUGOTON - Roberto Sosa, 71, Hugoton, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton, is handling arrangements.
E.I. "Shorty" Warden
LAKIN - E.I. "Shorty" Warden, 81, of Lakin, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Dec. 3, 1919, at Eads, Colo., the son of Elra Edwin and Marian (Smith) Warden. He grew up and attended schools at Eads. After graduating from high school, he worked at various jobs including at Chiles Campbell Filling Station in Eads.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945, serving as staff sergeant in the CO A 27th Infantry. He fought in Guadalcanal, the Northern Solomons and Luzon. While serving, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, a Bronze Service Star and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. After the service, he returned to Eads.
Mr. Warden lived in Eads until moving to Lakin in 1953. He worked as a meter inspector for Colorado Interstate Gas Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of First Christian Church of Eads, and enjoyed sports, golfing and playing bingo.
For years, he donated his summers announcing and score keeping for Lakin Recreation ball programs and was also the announcer for the Deerfield Spartan's football team. He also served as a scout for the Garden City Community College basketball team.
On Nov. 29, 1941, he married Jean Abrams at Tribune. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Trenton Warden, Deerfield, Neil Warden, Albuquerque, N.M., and Leigh Warden, Grand Junction, Colo.; a daughter, Pamela McBride, Garden City; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two granddaughters.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Lakin, with the Rev. David Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. today and Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
Flossie F. Jennings
Flossie F. Jennings, 94, passed away April 6, 2001 at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. She was born March 28, 1907 in Tussy, Oklahoma to Charles and Rozetta Morris Pierce. Ms. Jennings had been a resident of Sylvia and Turon since 1943. She was a homemaker who was married to James D. Jennings on Jan. 13, 1923, in Royal, Oklahoma. He passed away on July 24, 1981.
Ms. Jennings belonged to the Turon Community Church, CWF, American Legion Aux., Art Club, Senior Citizen Group, Eastern Star - all of Turon.
Survivors include: daughters; Betty C. Childs, Sterling, Linda K. Yost, Garden City, sister; June Walker, Pauis Valley, Oklahoma; foster son; Bill Clark, Belton, MIssouri, grandchildren; Kevin Childs, Sterling, Rhonda Chadwick, Hutchinson, Bill and Mike Jennings, Hutchinson, Lori Walter, Dighton, Dana Bullock, Garden City and 15 great grandchildren.
Service will be at 11 a.m., Tues., April 10, 2001 at Memorial Park Cemetery
in Hutchinson. Officiating will be the Rev. Mervin Yost. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery
in Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m., Monday, at Sillin Funeral Home in Sterling. Memorial will be to Sterling Presbyterian Manor, care of the funeral home.
Jimmie L. Nichols
Funeral for Jimmie L. Nichols, 62, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Nichols died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at his home in Garden City.
He was born April 30, 1938, at Garden City, the son of Velmer and Esther Anna (Degenhardt) Nichols. He grew up in the Garden City and Copeland areas, attended schools in Copeland and graduated from Copeland High School.
Mr. Nichols lived in California for about six years during the 1960s before returning to Garden City where he worked for 25 years as a truck driver at Hitch Feeders. He enjoyed fishing and camping.
On Nov. 18, 1963, he married Carole Douglas in Kansas. On April 11, 1975, he and Cynthia Rich were married in New Mexico. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Raymond D. Nichols, Waterloo, Iowa, and Roger P. Nichols, Lansing; two daughters, Kelly Dobson, Pensacola, Fla., and Elizabeth K. Nichols, of the home; three brothers, Joe Nichols, Garden City, Bev Nichols, Holcomb, and Melvin Nichols, address unknown; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Pete Nichols and Leroy Nichols; and an infant sister.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Center of Independent Living, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
W.D. "Willard" Bodam
ULYSSES - W.D. "Willard" Bodam, 88, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.
He was born March 21, 1913, at Lakin, the son of Jacob Cleveland and Olive (McCollough) Bodam. He was a graduate of Lakin High School.
A Garden City resident since 1952, he moved to Ulysses in October 2000. He served five years in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been employed as an agent for the Santa Fe Railroad for 27 years until his retirement.
Mr. Bodam served on the Senior Citizen Board at Garden City and coordinated weekly bridge games for the Senior Center of Finney County. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and American Legion Post No. 9, both at Garden City.
On May 31, 1936, he married Athene Hoyt at Lakin. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Phyllis Jean Harkness, Friend, Virginia Louise Johnson, Garden City, and Cynthia Anne Armstrong, Ulysses; a brother, Myron Dwight Bodam, Pueblo, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by twin daughters, Athene and Marie; and a brother, Hugh Rell Bodam.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Garden City. Mitch Williams, branch president, will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakin Cemetery.

John W. Louk
John W. Louk, 91, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 4, 1909, at Quincy in Woodson County, the son of Charles Wesley Jr. and Hattie Ann (Naylor) Louk. He attended school in Woodson County.
The family lived on a farm south of Kendall from 1943 until moving to Syracuse in 1956. A farmer, he had also worked a variety of other jobs.
On Sept. 25, 1935, he married Lyla May Deck at Yates Center. She preceded him in death as did his parents; a brother, Vernon Louk; three sisters, Hazel Urton, Elizabeth Darlin and Grace Puckett; a son, Billy Raymond Louk; a daughter, Nancy Carol Louk; and a great-grandson.
Mr. Louk had lived at Terrace Garden Care Center for 14 months. He enjoyed reading western books, gardening and maintaining his orchard, and was known as a "master salvager."
He is survived by four sons, Alve Louk, Manhattan, Melvin Louk and Gale Louk, both of Garden City, and Gilbert Louk, Emporia; two daughters, Vera Plowman, Summersville, Mo., and Nyla Simon, Syracuse; two sisters, Billye Finlay, Kendall, and Beatrice Crumrine, Yates Center; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. MST Saturday in Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. Rod Collins officiating.
Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST Friday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to Terrace Garden Care Center or Syracuse Wesleyan Church, both in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.
Walter A. "Sarge" Foreman
Walter A. "Sarge" Foreman, 86, of Garden City, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born June 6, 1914, in Finney County, the son of Absolem Craig and Mary Margaret (Zigler) Foreman. He attended country schools in Finney County.
A lifetime resident of Finney County, Mr. Foreman worked in farming for several years before becoming the owner and operator of Walter Foreman Trucking Co.
He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Veterans of the Vietnam War, Eagles Lodge and the Kansas Motor Carriers Association, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946.
Survivors include his brother, Mac Foreman, Garden City; and his sister, Maude Hawkins, Junction City, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and five sisters.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Richmond Graham officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the VFW of Garden City, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
