Ethan A. Quakenbush
SUBLETTE - Ethan A. Quakenbush, 81, of Sublette, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at Satanta District Hospital.
He was born April 30, 1919, in Edwards County, the son of Charles Alfred and Bernice Irene (Ratliff) Quakenbush. The family came to Finney County when he was 18 months old. He returned to Haskell County after World War II where he served in the Alaskan Command.
On Dec. 20, 1945, he and Laura C. Miller were married in Garden City. They attended Kansas State University together after which he served as an Extension agent in Pratt County and Harvey County. They returned to Haskell County in 1951 where he enjoyed farming and raising cattle. After his retirement in 1976, they moved to Sublette.
Mr. Quakenbush was a member of Sublette United Methodist Church, American Legion and Masonic Lodge in Garden City, and a former member of the Sublette Soil Conservation Board, Farm Bureau and Farm Bureau Board at Sublette. He enjoyed gardening and bird watching.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mary Lynn Deborski, Midland, Mich.; and Marsha Rich, Lawrence; two sisters, Roberta Niquette, Grand Junction, Colo., and Shirley Burnside, Buffalo, Okla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Eugene Quakenbush and Donald Quakenbush.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Sublette, with the Rev. Mary Al Titus officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Sublette American Legion Post No. 205.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
Pearl V. Alpers
ULYSSES - Pearl V. Alpers, 100, of Dodge City, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Trinity Manor in Dodge City.
She was born Oct. 16, 1900, in Delaware County, Okla., the daughter of Stephen and Minerva (Brannan) Medley. She grew up in Delaware County.
A Dodge City resident since 1917, she was a homemaker and had worked at the Harvey House in Dodge City. She belonged to First Christian Church.
In 1919, she married Clyde Boner at Dodge City. He died in 1926. She married Henry E. "Speck" Alpers in 1927. He died in 1956.
Survivors include four sons, Arthur Alpers and C.A. "Bud" Boner, both of San Francisco, Johnny Alpers, Dodge City, and Melvin Boner, East Wenatche, Wash.; four daughters, Dora May Broberg, Midvale, Utah, June Meyer, Ulysses, Patsy Robertson, Montezuma, and Lorene Smith, San Francisco; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with Nolan Head officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Narcissa B. Martinez
Vigil service for Narcissa B. Martinez, 82, will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Martinez died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Oct. 29, 1918, in Orange County, Texas, the daughter of Mariano and Jacinta (Padilla) Barrientez.
A Texas resident until moving to Garden City in 1969, she was a homemaker. She belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church, and enjoyed listening to music and spending time with her family.
In 1935, she married Lucas Martinez in Texas. He died April 15, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three sons, two daughters, five granddaughters, four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include three sons, Jesus Martinez, Wichita, Juan Martinez, Garden City, and Alberto Martinez, Larned; four daughters, Maria "Romana" DeLaRosa, Walla Walla, Wash., Maria Guebara, Deerfield, Sylema Montemayor, Garden City, and Emily Delgado, Roswell, N.M.; three brothers, Julian Barrientez, Cruz Barrientez and Domingo Barrientez, and two sisters, Margarita Guerra and Martina Vicente, all of Texas; 35 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Narcissa Martinez Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Angelena B. "Lena" Acosta
Vigil service for Angelena B. "Lena" Acosta, 81, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Acosta died Friday, April 20, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Aug. 9, 1919, at Garden City, the daughter of Herman and Fernanda (Ayala) Bernal. She attended Garden City schools.
A lifetime resident of Garden City, she worked most of her life in the dry cleaning business, working as a presser for Raley's Cleaners and Streeter Cleaners, and had worked as a seamstress for Streeter Cleaners for 20 years. At one time, she also worked as a custodian and paraprofessional for the Garden City schools.
Mrs. Acosta was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, St. Mary Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella, Our Lady of Perpetual Help. She enjoyed sewing, and spending time with her family and grandsons.
On Jan. 12, 1944, she married Domingo H. Acosta at Garden City. He died Aug. 6, 1984. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Domingo Bernal, Jesus Bernal, Jose Bernal and Raymond Bernal; and two sisters, Carmen Medina and Guadalupe Hernandez.
She is survived by a son, John R. Acosta, Garden City; and three grandsons.

Jennie Marie Reese
COPELAND - Jennie Marie Reese, 95, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at her home in Copeland.
She was born April 2, 1906, at Kinsley, the daughter of Charles E. and Jennie (Sterling) Sommerville. The family moved to Copeland in 1912.
On March 9, 1923, she married Victor E. Reese at Meade. He died Nov. 16, 1978. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Sterling Raymond Reese; a daughter, Virginia Wagner; a grandson; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Jim Sommerville, Sam Sommerville and Charles Sterling Sommerville; and two sisters, Maude Sommerville and Esther Eslinger.
In 1971, Mrs. Reese moved to Dodge City where she lived for 19 years before moving in August 1990 to Canon City, Colo. She returned to Copeland in September 2000.
A homemaker, she enjoyed being involved in her family's many activities. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting afghans, ceramics, collecting Avon bottles, playing table games and cards, and watching television in the evening.
Mrs. Reese was a member of the United Methodist Church, Friday Afternoon Club and Rebekah Lodge, all at Copeland.
She is survived by five sons, Robert Reese, Sunnyvale, Calif., Vic G. Reese, Bakersfield, Calif., Ron Reese, Copeland, Jerry Reese, Garden City, and Roger Reese, Canon City; two daughters, Betty Hartnett, Ensign, and Barbara Downing, Copeland; 36 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Copeland, with the Revs. Warren Cico and Larry Donelson officiating. Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery.

Eufelia Escalada
Vigil service for Eufelia Escalada, 96, will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Escalada died Friday, April 20, 2001, at her home in Garden City.
She was born May 23, 1904, at Tucumcari, N.M., the daughter of David and Mary (Montona) Quintana. She lived in various places in Colorado as a child before moving with her family in 1926 to Garden City where she has lived since.
On Feb. 14, 1927, she married Phillip Escalada Sr. at Garden City. He died Sept. 18, 1951. She was also preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; three sons, Larry Escalada, Tony Escalada and Phil Escalada; two brothers; and one sister.
A homemaker, Mrs. Escalada also worked as a housekeeper and a nanny for many years and had worked in the sugar beet fields in her younger years. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, growing flowers, antique shopping, garage sales and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, a life member of the VFW Auxiliary, and was the last Gold Star Mother of the VFW Auxiliary in Garden City.
She is survived by three sons, George Escalada, San Jose, Calif., Jesse Escalada Sr. and John Escalada, both of Wichita; two daughters, Margaret Escalada, Garden City, and Jane Rodriguez, Lynn Center, Ill.; a sister, Rebecca Mariz, Arvada, Colo.; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
