Ruby Faye Carter
SYRACUSE - Ruby Faye Carter, 82, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., following a short illness.
She was born Sept. 21, 1918, at Syracuse, the daughter of Phinas Earl and Millie Irene (Platz) Dunn. She graduated from Syracuse High School.
On Jan. 1, 1938, she married Arthur E. Carter at the home of his father, Murray Carter, in rural Syracuse. A homemaker, she had lived most of her life on their farm four miles west of Syracuse before relocating to their present home in Syracuse in 1976. From 1937 to 1946, she and her husband traveled extensively and worked for Stanolind Oil & Gas Co. in the western and southern states.
Mrs. Carter was a member of Syracuse Presbyterian Church and volunteered for the Budget Shop in Syracuse as well as other community and church projects. She enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, gardening, collecting books and antiques, and spending time with her family.
Her husband died Oct. 21, 1986. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Emmett M. Dunn and C. Milton Dunn; a sister, Ida I. Dunn; and a granddaughter.
She is survived by a son, Lance Ray Carter, Colorado Springs; two daughters, Valerie E. Carter-Cole, Littleton, Colo., and Delores I. Eyer, San Antonio; two sisters, Leah M. Olson, Pocatilla, Idaho, and Betty L. Dunn, Mayer, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law including Doris Carter of Syracuse; nephews, nieces and cousins; and four grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. MDT Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Bob Goebel officiating. Graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery. The graveside service will be followed by a reception for family and friends at the church.
Visitation hours are from 1 to 8 p.m. MDT Sunday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.
Marion Kenley "Ken" Cromer
ELKHART - Funeral for Marion Kenley "Ken" Cromer, 53, of Elkhart, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Church of God, Elkhart, followed by graveside service in Elkhart Cemetery.
Mr. Cromer died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita.
He was born Sept. 16, 1947, at Russellville, Ala.
Survivors include his mother, Lola (Barry) Cromer, Watervliet, Mich.; two brothers, Barry Cromer, Watervliet, and Randy Cromer, Coloma, Mich.; a son, Aaron Cromer, Elkhart; a daughter, Terra (Cromer) Orth, Elkhart; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Sonny Cromer.

Stephen Edward Rettig
Stephen Edward Rettig, 55, a former Garden City resident, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at his home in Salina.
He was born July 23, 1945, at Wichita.
Mr. Rettig was the MIS operations manager for UMB NBA Bank in Salina. He had previously worked for First National Bank of Great Bend, Garden National Bank of Garden City and for the Santa Fe Railroad.
A Salina resident since 1982, he was a member and usher of First Southern Baptist Church at Salina, belonged to Big Brothers, Big Sisters, the Garden City Jaycees and the Salina Twirlers, and had served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by two daughters, Jaunita J. Justice, Carneys Point, N.J., and Natasha M. Behner, Salina; a brother, Richard A. Rettig, a sister, Laura M. Rettig, and his father, Ross E. Rettig, all of Wellington; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Constance J. Tarrant; and a sister, Linda Rettig.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at First Southern Baptist Church, Salina, with the Rev. Glenn Davis officiating. A reception dinner will follow the memorial service. Friends wishing to provide food items to the family should bring them to the church Monday for the dinner.

Isidro Gomez-Nunez
DEERFIELD - Isidro Gomez-Nunez, 68, of Deerfield, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
He was born Nov. 6, 1932, at Rancho Colorado, Dr. Belizaro Dominquez, Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Jose DeLuz and Carolina (Nunez) Gomez-Mendoza.
A resident of the United States for 40 years, he had lived in Deerfield since 1986, moving from Pueblo, Colo. He worked in the beef products division of IBP.
He is survived by his wife, Consuelo Najera-Gomez of Cienegia, DeLoya, Chihuahua; six children, Manvela Gomez DeBalderrama, Cienega, DeLoya, Chihuahua, Christina Gomez DeChacon and Umbelina Gomez DeMedina, both of Chihuahua, Jorge Gomez Najera and Maria Elia Gomez Najera, both of Pueblo, and Rosa Gomez Najera, Adams, Okla.; seven brothers and sisters, Blas Gomez Nunez, Pueblo, Lydia Gomez DeMunoz, Rudolfo Gomez Nunez, Andres Gomez Nunez, Chon Gomez Nunez, Rafaela Gomez Nunez and Kathalina Gomez Nunez, all of Chihuahua; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, four brothers and one sister.
Funeral and burial will take place in Cienega DeLoya, Dr. Belizaro Dominquez, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
Melba Marie McLain
SUBLETTE - Melba Marie McLain, 80, of San Antonio, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., after battling chronic respiratory conditions for six years.
She was born Aug. 30, 1920, at Darrouzzett, Texas, the daughter of Percy J. and Mary Allen (Hagler) Ghenn.
After graduation in 1940, she began teaching English in Spade, Texas before moving to Woodward, Okla., in 1942 to take a job in a bank. She returned to banking in 1953, with a position at Haskell County State Bank in Sublette. She retired in 1983 and moved to Dodge City. She moved to Texas in 1995 after the death of her sister, Nelda.
Mrs. McLain was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sublette and the Hubbard Museum of American West. She enjoyed family gatherings.
On Jan. 21, 1944, she married F.M. Dale McLain at Woodward. He died Jan. 21, 1994.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan Dale Hubbard, Palm Desert, Calif.; a son, Lloyd McLain, Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Bessie Allen, Borger, Texas; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with the Rev. Dick Robbins officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.

Dulcinea "Candy" Cruz
Vigil service for Dulcinea "Candy" Cruz, 98, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Cruz died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born March 7, 1903, at Pasamonte, N.M., the daughter of Frank and Isabel (Martinez) Leal, and grew up in New Mexico.
On July 28, 1925, she married Arturo Cruz at Pasamonte. They moved from Clayton, N.M., to Garden City in 1956. He died July 12, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; an infant daughter; a son, George Cruz; a brother; three sisters; and four grandchildren.
Mrs. Cruz was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She volunteered many hours at the hospital and nursing homes while living in Clayton. A homemaker, she enjoyed cooking, sewing, praying and taking care of people.
She is survived by five sons, Henry Cruz, Tony Cruz, Arthur Cruz and John Cruz, all of Garden City, and Earnest, Amarillo, Texas; a daughter, Florinda Servantez, Garden City; two sisters, Nellie Archuletta and Victoria Barela, both of Trinidad, Colo.; 32 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary School, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Walter J. "Bud" Wedel
COOLIDGE - Walter J. "Bud" Wedel, 76, of Coolidge and formerly of Sublette, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born Nov. 9, 1924, at Moundridge, the son of Henry and Nora Mildred (Harsh) Wedel. The family moved to Syracuse when he was 6.
On Aug. 18, 1947, he married Elda Elaine Hurley at Lakin. They moved from Syracuse to Liberal in 1956 and to Sublette in 1961. After her death on Nov. 16, 1986, he moved to Coolidge to care for his ailing mother.
Mr. Wedel worked for Northern Natural Gas Co. as an oiler and shift foreman, and also owned and operated Wedel's General Repair in Sublette from 1968 to 1986. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Holly, Colo., and served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart. He enjoyed his family activities, researching family history, gardening, flowers, farming with his brother, and helping others.
On June 4, 1989, he married Letha Faye (Donaldson) Kimbell at Syracuse. She survives. He is also survived by a great-grandson, Trey Shelby Sandbothe, of the home; two sons, Donald Ray Wedel, Newton, and Ronald Dean Wedel, Hungary; two daughters, Elda Marie Watson, Manhattan, and Patricia "Patty" Sunderland, Satanta; a stepson, John Kimbell, Westfork, Ark.; three stepdaughters, Alice Babcock, Garden City, Carol Bewley, Las Animas, Colo., and Nancy Wagner, Driftwood, Texas; a brother, Robert "Bob" Wedel, Coolidge; four sisters, Ethel Brown, Garden City, Kathryn Dale, Colorado Springs, Colo., Mildred Nusser, Kansas, Okla., and Anne Ping, McClouth; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette, with President Eugene Thornburgh officiating.
