Miriam "Mimi" Calder Dunn
Miriam "Mimi" Calder Dunn, 78, a former Garden City resident, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in Castle Rock, Colo.
She was born Nov. 10, 1922, at Colorado Springs, Colo., the daughter of William IV and Ruth (Gile) Calder. She graduated in 1941 from Andover Academy in Andover, Mass., and then attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
A longtime resident of Liberal, she moved to Castle Rock in June 1999. She had worked at the LaCarta Hallmark store for a few years and was a homemaker. Her memberships included Chapter FA P.E.O., Aurora Club and the First Presbyterian Church of Liberal.
On Aug. 21, 1942, she married James McCann Dunn Jr. at Tulsa, Okla. He died Nov. 10, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Ashley, Naperville, Ill., Katherine Fisher, Topeka, and Elizabeth Goodwin, Castle Rock; a brother, Richard Calder, Tulsa; and nine grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is planned for April.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Metro Denver, in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal, KS 67901.
Mabel O. Little
Mabel O. Little, 90, of Los Lunas, N.M., and formerly of Garden City, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M.
She was born April 23, 1910, at Haviland, the daughter of Newton Jasper and Mary Olive (Todd) Smith. She grew up in Haviland and attended schools there.
On June 30, 1929, she married Loyd W. Little at Haviland. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Greensburg. They later moved to Holcomb, then to Deerfield in 1962 and to Pierceville in 1972. In 1985, they moved to Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City where they lived until moving to Sterling in 1996. He died Nov. 9, 1996. Mrs. Little moved to Los Lunas in 1997. She enjoyed quilting and taking care of her family.
She is survived by four sons, Glenn Little, Sterling, Virgil Little, Camas Valley, Ore., Marion Little, Lawton, Okla., and Vernon Little, Vernal, Utah; five daughters, Audrey Dixon, Wellington, Arlene Jacob, Sterling, Mary Belle Mays, Napavine, Wash., Bethal Little, Los Lunas, and Charlotte Moore, Highland Ranch, Colo.; 30 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Harold Roy Little; a daughter, Georgia Scantlin; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; three brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with Dr. Glen Holman officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home.
Floyd Everett Houdyshell
HUGOTON - Funeral for Floyd Everett Houdyshell, 76, will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by the VETS Group.
Mr. Houdyshell died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident east of Hugoton on Kansas Highway 51.
He was born April 1, 1924, at Greensburg, the son of Albert C. and Mary Virginia (Moreland) Houdyshell Sr.
On Jan. 30, 1947, he married Lila Jean Fraim at Liberal. They moved from Liberal to Hugoton in 1967. Mr. Houdyshell was a mechanic for Panhandle Eastern for 32 years before retiring. He was a member of the Latter Day Saints Church and VFW, both at Hugoton, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Everett Duane Houdyshell, Gillette, Wyo.; three daughters, Mary Margarett Gallegos, Hugoton, Elva Marie Neuharth, Minatare, Neb., and Janice Sue Hastert, Ottawa; two brothers, Guy Houdyshell, Belton, Texas, and Albert C. Houdyshell Jr., Keys, Okla.; a sister, Agnes Davis, Guymon, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Leona Justice; and four brothers, Lawrence Houdyshell, Glenn Houdyshell, Ralph Houdyshell and Lloyd Houdyshell.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Sofia Acevedo (Martinez) Limon
SATANTA - Vigil service for Sofia Acevedo (Martinez) Limon, 85, will be 7 tonight at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Satanta. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Louis Trung Hoang officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.
Mrs. Limon died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Satanta District Hospital.
She was born July 19, 1915, at Mercedes, Texas, the daughter of Blas and Maria (Acevedo) Martinez.
On March 15, 1942, she married E.P. Limon at Weslaco, Texas. They moved from Chicago to Satanta in 1955.
A homemaker, she enjoyed cooking, especially making homemade tortillas. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, crocheting, giving her handmade gifts to her family members and sewing for them. In the Satanta community, she was known as "Grammie." She and her husband enjoyed taking their grandchildren with them on trips.
Mrs. Limon was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the Stitch And Chatter Club, and the Altar Society, all at Satanta.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Rick Limon, Satanta, Les Limon, El Dorado, and Emilio Limon, of Anthony; two daughters, Maria Edna Smith and Juanita Lau, both of Satanta; a brother, Manuel Martinez, Chicago; a sister, Blasa Martinez, Weslaco; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Dale L. Birney
Dale L. Birney, 66, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach, Mo.
He was born Dec. 2, 1934, at Sublette, the son of Earl and Juel (Nelson) Birney.
A resident of Sunrise Beach, Mo., moving from Garden City in 1996, he chartered Birney & Company in Garden City where he worked as a certified public accountant before retiring in 1996.
Mr. Birney belonged to the Ozark Chapel United Methodist Church and Osage Community Elks Lodge No. 2705, both at Laurie, Mo. He was on the board of directors of the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants from 1978 to 1982 and from 1987 to 1991, serving as president in 1989-90.
He was a former member of the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce, serving as its president in 1982, was a member of the American Institute of CPA's from 1971 to the present, belonged to American Legion Zack Wheat Post No. 624 of Sunrise Beach, and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
On July 14, 1957, he married Kathleen "Kitty" Dunham. She survives. He is also survived by a son, David R. Birney, Hutchinson; two daughters, Kathy Figger, of Hudson, and Karen Scheopner, Topeka; a brother, R. Max Birney, Golden, Colo.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Uel Lee Birney and Russell Birney.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James Lawley officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Memorials are suggested to the Ozark Chapel United Methodist Church, Garden City First United Methodist Church or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Robert "Hugh" Hampton
ULYSSES - Robert "Hugh" Hampton, 73, of Downs, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Extended Care Facility in Grand Island, Neb.
He was born May 23, 1927, in Grant County, the son of Ray and Ruth (Turner) Hampton.
A lifelong mechanic in Ulysses, Holcomb, Deerfield and Garden City, he retired in 1986 and moved to Downs to be close to fishing which he enjoyed while his health allowed.
Mr. Hampton was a member of American Legion Post No. 9 and VFW Post No. 2279 and a former member of the Moose Lodge, all at Garden City. He served in the U.S. Army.
In June 1950, he married Millie Mader Miller. They divorced in 1966.
He is survived by an adopted daughter, Connie Jo Miller Streeter, Garden City; a son, Steven Hugh Hampton, Downs; a daughter, Roberta "Bobbie" Riojas, Garden City; two sisters, Martha Gilliam, Hot Springs, Ark., and Nina Thacker, Jones, Okla.; a brother, Frank Hampton, Downs; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ray "Skeet" Hampton; and two sisters, Lela Eaton and Marjorie Hampton.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Ulysses Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Ulysses American Legion Post No. 79.
