William L. "Bill" Lewis
Funeral for William L. "Bill" Lewis, 78, of Garden City, will be 5 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating. A family committal service will follow on Sunday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Lewis died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born May 3, 1922, at Watonga, Okla., the son of E. Woolsie and Mary (Weldon) Lewis. He graduated from high school in Greenfield, Okla., and received his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University. He later received his master's degree in agriculture economics from Kansas State University.
During World War II, he served in Japan with the 43rd Weather Wing of the U.S. Air Force.
In 1947, he moved to Garden City, where he married Margaret Lawrence on June 29, 1947. He was a longtime farmer in Finney County, and owned the Five Points Nursery in Garden City.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Garden City, where he served as an ordained deacon and an elder. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 246 and Elks Lodge No. 1404, and was a school board member for USD 457 from 1963 to 1972. He enjoyed traveling and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Dorothy Mowery, Hutchinson, Mary Wolf, Overland Park, Pattie McGurk, Great Bend, and Jane Clark, Oklahoma City; his brother, Edward Lewis, Garden City; eight grandchildren; and one step-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Virginia J. Singer
Funeral for Virginia J. Singer, 87, of Garden City, will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery
in Garden City.
Mrs. Singer died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born Nov. 3, 1913, in Richfield to James Burt and Neva (Farmer) Marshall. After attending school in the Richfield area, she helped her family run a motel in Manter. She later moved to Scott City, and then, to LaJunta, Colo., where she managed a gas station.
She married Cloyce C. Singer on Sept. 16, 1942, in Syracuse. He died July 31, 1971.
In 1976 she moved to Garden City, where she worked as a receptionist at the Finney County Historical Society Museum. She enjoyed crafts and collecting dolls, and her special interest was making corsages out of pheasant feathers. She was also a member of First Christian Church of Garden City.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Della Pierce, Garden City; her brother, Jim Marshall, Richland, Wash.; three grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Daniel J. Singer and Robert Marshall Singer; and two brothers, Jack Marshall and Bob Marshall.
Memorials are suggested to the Finney County Historical Society Museum, in care of the funeral home. Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Henry A. Depperschmidt
Vigil service for Henry A. Depperschmidt, 87, will be 8 p.m. Friday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Depperschmidt died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born Jan. 4, 1914, at Park, the son of John and Agnes (Kreutzer) Depperschmidt, and grew up there.
A Garden City resident since 1952, he worked as a salesman for Machine Supply Co. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, John J. Haskell VFW Post No. 2279 and Eagles Lodge No. 3124 and served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant during World War II. He enjoyed playing golf and bowling.
On March 30, 1959, he married Ann M. Schadegg Schaefer at Garden City. She died July 28, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Norman Schaefer; two brothers, Paul Depperschmidt and Phillip Depperschmidt; three sisters, Cleo Fitzgerald, Martha Zerr and Christine Depperschmidt; two half brothers, Alex Depperschmidt and Serphine Depperschmidt; and two half sisters, Mary Wittman and Rosa Zimmerman.
He is survived by a daughter, Rita Lancaster, Kinsley; a brother, Gus Depperschmidt, Oakley; three sisters, Bertha Owens and Betty Kaiser, both of Denver, and Catherine Goetz, Dodge City; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Edwards County Health Care Foundation or St. Dominic School Endowment, both in care of the funeral home.
Betty Alberta Rebeck
ELKHART - Funeral for Betty Alberta Rebeck, 80, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest Southern Baptist Church, Elkhart, with Terrell Giddons officiating. Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery.
Mrs. Rebeck died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Elkhart.
She was born April 1, 1920, at Matamoras, Pa., the daughter of Burton and Frances (Rogers) Swingle.
Mrs. Rebeck served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
She is survived by two sons, Phillip Lee Adams, Oklahoma City, and Burton Kent Adams, Winter Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Betty Frances Schultz, Port Jervis, N.Y., Donna Margaret DeLaune, Henderson, Texas, and Penny Forbes; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Joy Schulze
ELKHART - Graveside service for Joy Schulze, 62, was to be today in Elkhart Cemetery, with the Rev. Dave Kraus officiating.
Mrs. Schulze died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Sharon, Conn.
She was born March 27, 1938, at Pontiac, Mich. On July 22, 1969, she married Thomas Schulze at Tucson, Ariz.
Mrs. Schulze enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing bingo and fishing.
She is survived by two daughters, Lisa Harmon, Dillsburg, Pa., and Linda Caggee, Elkhart; a stepdaughter, Marie Romero, Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Donna Wallen, Millbrook, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and three nieces.

Patrick R. Hockett
SATANTA - Patrick R. Hockett, 37, a former Satanta resident, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at his home in Neosho, Mo.
Born March 2, 1964, at Hays, to Elwin and Betty (Reimer) Hockett, he attended Satanta High School.
Mr. Hockett was self-employed.
On March 4, 2000, he married Heather Labaron at Grove, Okla. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Ryan Hockett, Joplin, Mo.; his mother and stepfather, Betty and Thayne Wright, Satanta; his stepmother, Hillie Hockett, Miami, Fla.; a brother, Kelly Hockett, Sacramento, Calif.; and his grandparents, Juanita Love, and Art and Velma Hockett, all of Satanta.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Happy Agers Center, Satanta, with the Rev. Larry Myers officiating.
Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette, is in charge of arrangements.
William Franklin Amrine
Graveside service for William Franklin Amrine, 91, of Brighton, Colo., was 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City.
Mr. Amrine, also known as Bud and Shorty, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at the home of his niece and nephew, Judy and Ed Hazen of Brighton, whom he had lived with since Aug. 24, 1999.
He was born June 12, 1909, the son of William D. and Gertrude E. Amrine.
A longtime resident of Finney County, he lived for more than 35 years at his home on Burnside Drive in Garden City. He had worked for John Crist and his sons, Raymond and Leland Crist, of Holcomb.
Mr. Amrine was a master sergeant during World War II and was a member of the American Legion in Garden City.
In 1962, he married Alice Homer. She preceded him in death as did his parents; a sister, Minerva Fine; a nephew, James Fine; and a niece, Betty Jones.
He is survived by his nieces, Patricia Cleere, Shawnee, Okla., Nellie Dunagan, California, Ida White, Arizona, and Judy Hazen of Brighton; his nephews, David Fine, Earl Fine and Jack Fine, all of Kansas; several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; a stepdaughter, Grace Wallace, Kansas; and a number of stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.
