Carolyn "Sue" Gies
Funeral for Carolyn "Sue" Gies, 61, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Dick Odum officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Gies died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Aug. 11, 1939, at Collinsville, Okla., the daughter of Kenneth and Dora (Mathews) Maxwell. When she was young, the family moved to Garden City where she graduated from Garden City High School and Garden City Community College.
A homemaker, Mrs. Gies was also the vice president of Grain Belt Electric. She was a member of First Baptist Church, ESA Sorority, Target Coffee Club and the Archeological Society. She enjoyed reading, archeology and visiting museums of natural history.
On Nov. 20, 1960, she married John A. Gies at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Allen Gies, Little Rock, Ark., and William Gies, St. Paul, Minn.; a daughter, Annette Ramsey, Garden City; her mother, Garden City; and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Barbara Page.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Lou Denton
SUBLETTE - Funeral for Lou Denton, 61, of Kismet, will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Kismet United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Vernon Maelzer and J. Weegie Williams officiating. Burial will be in Kismet Cemetery.
Mrs. Denton died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Born March 4, 1939, at Springfield, Mo., the daughter of Ben O. and Ellen (Ringgenberg) Johnson, she graduated from Bios ?D' Arc (Mo.) High School in 1957.
Mrs. Denton moved to Liberal in 1957 and to Kismet in 1963. She was a fieldperson and material handler for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company at the Liberal Station for 19 years, retiring in April 1994. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Kismet Town Kryers.
On Feb. 2, 1958, she married Howard J. "Bud" Denton at Clayton, N.M. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Rick Denton, Sublette, and Mark Denton, Alva, Okla.; two daughters, Debbie Anthony, Shallowater, Texas, and Shawna Marcellus, Liberal; a brother, Roy Johnson, Hot Springs Village, Ark.; a sister, Betty Furber, Liberal; eight grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Johnson; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Alcorn and Dortha May Johnson.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Mortuary, Liberal. Memorials are suggested to the Lupus Foundation, in care of the mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln St., Liberal, KS 67905.
Doc Hoang
Funeral for Doc Hoang, 69, will take place Thursday at the Buddhist Temple in Garden City. Inurnment is planned for later in the family plot in Vietnam.
Mr. Hoang died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Hai Hung, Vietnam, the son of Tuan and My Thi Vu Hoang.
He served in the Vietnam military for many years before moving to Garden City in 1997. He was a member of the Buddhist faith.
Survivors include his wife, his children, and many friends and relatives.
There will be no visitation. Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, is in charge of arrangements.
Emilia Vergara de Vazquez
SYRACUSE - Vigil service, rosary and flower card reading for Emilia Vergara de Vazquez, 65, will be 7 MST tonight at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Syracuse. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. MST Friday at the church. Burial will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.
Mrs. Vazquez died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at her home in Syracuse.
She was born Jan. 6, 1936, at Aguaje Gran Morelos, Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Jesus Antonio and Herlinda (Lopez) Vergara. She attended school in Mexico.
Mrs. Vazquez had lived in the United States for five years. A homemaker, she enjoyed gardening.
On Dec. 15, 1955, she married Miguel Vazquez in Mexico. He survives. She is also survived by six sons, Miguel Angel Vazquez and Mario Vazquez, both of Syracuse, Octavio Vazquez and Alfonso Vazquez, both of Tribune, Martin Vazquez, Leoti, and Alonso Vazquez, Denver; five daughters, Lidia Antonia Vazquez, Maria del Refugio Vazquez, Maria Reyes Benitez and Elvira Solano, all of Syracuse, and Herlinda Valetta, Tribune; four brothers, Jose Vergara and Elias Vergara, both of Casa Grandes, Chihuahua, Baltazar Vergara, El Valle, Chihuahua, and Leopoldo Vergara, Tijuana, Baha, Calif.; a sister, Maria del Rosario Vergara, Chihuahua, Chihuahua; 16 grandsons; 11 granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and five great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her father, in 1950, and her mother, in 1960.

Florence C. Walker
DIGHTON - Funeral for Florence C. Walker, 98, will be 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Walker died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.
She was born Jan. 16, 1902, at Wellington, the daughter of Ira Milton and Margaret Anna (Clark) Robertson. When she was 6 months old, the family moved to Woodward, Okla.
On Dec. 24, 1924, she married Jay C. Walker at Woodward. They then moved to Dighton where she was a homemaker and farm wife. He died June 27, 1962. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.
Mrs. Walker was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and belonged to all church organizations and offices, and all offices of Order of Eastern Star No. 241. She enjoyed traveling, knitting and quilting.
She is survived by a son, Jay C. Walker Jr., Dighton; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
A.G. Bontke
Funeral for A.G. Bontke, 78, of Kress, Texas, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Plainview, Texas, with the Rev. Gerald Boerger officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park.
Mr. Bontke died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home in Kress.
He was born March 30, 1922, at Malone in Hill County, Texas, and moved to Kress when he was young. On May 19, 1946, he married Emma Boedeker at Plainview.
Mr. Bontke was a farmer, retiring in 1980. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a member and past elder of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and a former member of the Board of Directors of Kress Farmers Elevator.
He is survived by three daughters, Carlyn Kunkel, Garden City, Shirley Bontke and Dianna Campbell, both of Kress; two brothers, L.C. Bontke, Bella Vista, Ark., and Ernest Bontke, Ford; three sisters, Agusta Bontke, Amarillo, Texas, Minnie Self, Claude, Texas, and Ruth Young, Kress; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Bontke Jr. and Max Bontke.

Leo F. "Slim" McMahon Sr.
Vigil service for Leo F. "Slim" McMahon Sr., 90, of Pampa, Texas, was to be 7 p.m. Sunday at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, Pampa. Funeral Mass was to be 4 p.m. today at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Pampa, with the Rev. Francisco Perez officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Atlantic (Iowa) Cemetery, with Msgr. Lawrence Beeson officiating.
Mr. McMahon, a former Garden City resident, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Amarillo, Texas.
He was born Feb. 20, 1910, at Anita, Iowa.
A resident of Pampa since 1978, moving from Garden City, he had lived in Massena, Iowa for most of his life. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and receiving a Purple Heart.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Selma (Michealson) McMahon, who died in 1988. Survivors include five daughters, Terry Woodward, Rose Keys and Christine Stephenson, all of Pampa, Mary Cruz, Dodge City, and Kathy McMillan, Garden City; two sons, Leo McMahon Jr., Amarillo, and Stephen Michael McMahon, Garden City; a brother, Leland McMahon, Danville, Va.; 20 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Arlie Ilene Cox
HUGOTON - Arlie Ilene Cox, 77, of Hugoton, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit.
She was born Aug. 13, 1923, at Hugoton, the daughter of Ora Kirk and Bertha (Bell) Nelson. A lifetime resident of Hugoton, she worked in the office of Enron Gas Co.
She is survived by a son, Frank Cox, Amarillo, Texas; a brother, Ora Kirk Nelson Jr., Redding, Calif.; and two sisters, Verla Belle Rosel, Hugoton, and Delda Mae Chance, Little Rock, Ark. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Frazer.
There will be no service or visitation. Cremation has taken place, with inurnment to be conducted later.
