Leona P. (Kuhlmann) Sonderegger
Leona P. (Kuhlmann) Sonderegger, 89, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born April 16, 1911, at Lydia, the daughter of William H. and Katherine (Coerber) Kuhlmann, and grew up in the Lydia area. She graduated from high school in Leoti, and also graduated from Dague Business College in Wichita.
On Aug. 20, 1939, she married Paul J. Sonderegger at Lydia. They moved to Washington, D.C., and lived there until 1945. They then moved back to the farm in Wichita County where they lived until moving to Garden City in 1961.
A homemaker and farm wife, Mrs. Sonderegger also enjoyed working as a bookkeeper at McAllister Lumber, Sy Harmon Hardware and Bill King Hardware. She also enjoyed handiwork, crocheting afghans and especially enjoyed traveling.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, was an ordained elder at the church, and belonged to the Presbyterian Women, Business and Professional Women, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the American Association of Retired Persons. She volunteered as a gray lady at the Red Cross, volunteered at St. Catherine Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include two sons, Ray Sonderegger, Leoti, and Glen W. Sonderegger, Garden City; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died May 28, 1965; her parents; a son, Donald Lee Sonderegger; and two infant sisters.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Edward Garvin Ply
SYRACUSE - Edward Garvin Ply, 72, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at his home in Syracuse.
He was born March 29, 1928, at Olathe, Colo., the son of Floyd Ply and Ella Shook. He attended Syracuse schools and received his GED certificate while serving in the U.S. Air Force.
A Syracuse resident for more than 50 years, he retired in 1993 as an equipment operator for the Hamilton County Road Department where he had worked for 16 years. He had also worked for Herndon Grocery, Palmer Amoco Service Station and did construction work. Mr. Ply loved animals, collected duck figurines, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and eating Kentucky Fried Chicken.
He is survived by his life mate of 26 years, Maxine J. Ralstin of Syracuse; two daughters, Melinda Ply, Pensacola, Fla., and Michelle Baier, Guttenburg, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Vivian Ply, Lamar, Colo.; a grandson; a granddaughter; three nieces; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, Ella (Shook) Conley; his stepfather, Vernon Conley; a brother, Duane Ply; and a sister, Mary Frances Robertson.
There will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the Hamilton County Meals on Wheels Program, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home & Monuments, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.
Augustine H. Gonzales Jr.
HUGOTON - Augustine H. Gonzales Jr., 66, of Hugoton, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Dec. 8, 1934, at Tavaila, Texas, the son of Augustine Sr. and Romana (Hernandez) Gonzales.
On Aug. 14, 1953, he married Trinidad H. Hernandez at Tavaila. They moved from Brownfield, Texas, to Hugoton in 1976. He was a grain elevator operator for Cargill Grain at Moscow and a member of Monte Santo Church in Hugoton.
He is survived by his wife; four sons, Johnny Gonzales and Manuel Gonzales, both of Hugoton; Richard Gonzales, Branson, Mo., and Augustine Gonzales, Wamego; three daughters, Linda Tapia, Brownfield, Sylvia Jones, Bucklin, and Mary Ellen Juartz, Hugoton; a sister, Juanita Villarel, Corpus Christi, Texas; 21 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; one sister; a daughter, Beatrice Gonzales; and a grandson.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Monte Santo Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Jorge Tinoco officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.
Helen Marie Lofland
ULYSSES - Helen Marie Lofland, 84, of Ulysses, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder, Colo.
She was born March 24, 1916, in Ford County, the daughter of Lee and Gladys (Vincent) Rundell. After graduating from Stafford High School in 1933, she taught school for three years.
On Sept. 18, 1938, she married Kenneth Lofland in Stafford County, where they lived until moving to Grant County in 1947.
Mrs. Lofland was involved in 4-H clubs, owned a flower shop for 12 years, and wrote a book of her memories, "Down Memory Lane." She enjoyed reading, crafts, ceramics, traveling, antiques, and writing cards and letters of encouragement. She was a member of Church of Christ in Ulysses and taught 2- and 3-year-olds in Sunday school for 50 years.
The oldest of seven children, she was preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters, Anna Lee, Harold Rundell, Evelyn Rundell, Jay Rundell, Edna Rundell and Dorothy Hathaway. Her husband died in 1983.
She is survived by a son, Ron Lofland, Ulysses; two daughters, Judy Winger and Karen Sue Treschl, both of Longmont, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Naomi Rundell and Gwen Rundell; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of Christ, Ulysses. A second service is planned for 3 p.m. Thursday at Church of Christ, Stafford, with Warren Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in Stafford Peace Creek Cemetery.

Charles A. Brinkmeyer
Charles A. Brinkmeyer, 89, of Hutchinson, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Westy Community Care Home in Westmoreland.
He was born Dec. 24, 1911, at Bogue, the son of Arthur Lee and Nettie (Morse) Brinkmeyer. He graduated from Holcomb High School.
A longtime resident of Garden City and Hutchinson, he was the retired owner of Brinkmeyer Fruit Market in South Hutchinson and had also farmed in Finney County. He returned to South Hutchinson in 1991 and had lived in Westmoreland since December 2000.
Mr. Brinkmeyer was a member of South Hutchinson United Methodist Church and a former member of South Hutchinson Lions Club.
On Oct. 12, 1941, he married Joye Edna Smith at South Hutchinson. She died May 14, 2000. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Brinkmeyer.
He is survived by three daughters, Joan Schweer, Olsburg, Juanita Regehr Christensen, Thornton, Colo., and Charlene Neill, Pagosa Springs, Colo.; a brother, Arthur Brinkmeyer, and a sister, Helen Hoyt Blackman, both of Garden City; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Halstead Cemetery.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the mortuary, 1219 N. Main St., Hutchinson, KS 67501.
Barbara Sue Harbour
ULYSSES - Barbara Sue Harbour, 53, of Ulysses, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Rose Medical Center in Denver.
She was born April 17, 1947, at Garden City, the daughter of Harold Keith and Millie Jane (Simpson) McManaman.
A bank teller for a number of years, she had worked at the Grant County Bank and Southwest Bank, and also did bookkeeping for Faulkner's and the Ulysses Co-op. She was a member of Shelton Memorial Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, both at Ulysses.
On Feb. 24, 1989, she married Gene Harbour at Ulysses. He survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Melissa Jackson, Enid, Okla.; a stepson, David Harbour, and a stepdaughter, Nicole Law, both of Ulysses; two sisters, Nancy Badders, Pratt, and her twin sister, Donna Frydendall, Ulysses; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Revs. Bill Harrold and Sam Bynum officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Icy Lee Bentley
A memorial service for Icy Lee Bentley, 72, is planned for 11 a.m. Friday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Bentley died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Larned Healthcare and Living Center.
She was born Aug. 31, 1928, at Canadian, Texas, the daughter of Julius Leland and Ruth (Bilton) Hill. A resident of Larned, formerly of Garden City, she was a homemaker and belonged to the Christian faith.
She married Eugene Howard Bentley. He died Jan. 7, 1984. She was also preceded in death by a son, George Wayne Bentley.
She is survived by a daughter, Janét Romaker, Canyon City, Colo.; a brother, John Hill, Garland, Texas; and five grandchildren.
