Alice E. Wallace
SCOTT CITY - Alice E. Wallace, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born May 9, 1923, in Harper County, the daughter of Julius A. and Belle I. (McAtee) Forpahl.
A homemaker, she had been a Scott City resident since 1998, moving from Leoti. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary at Dighton and Alcoholics Anonymous.
On Aug. 3, 1963, she married Donald Wallace at Dighton. He died Nov. 4, 1995, at Leoti. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Survivors include a son, Douglas Wallace, Larned; three daughters, Diana Loveall, Salina, Darlene Friesen, Hutchinson, and Denise Frye, Olathe; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. today and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County Home Health Care Foundation or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.
Edith L. Scheer
INGALLS - Funeral for Edith L. Scheer, 89, of the rural Ewing/Orchard community in Nebraska, was 10:30 a.m. Jan. 19 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Omaha, Neb., with the Rev. Philip Heuser officiating. Burial followed in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery.
Mrs. Scheer died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Mercy Care Center in Omaha, where she had been a resident for 3 1/2 years.
She was born March 12, 1911, near Odell, Neb., the daughter of Charles and Mary (Shaver) Finch.
On June 8, 1936, she married Melvin F. Scheer. They spent their lives in the Ewing/Orchard community involved in farming. She taught country school for seven years in several Gage county districts, with her first school, directly after high school, being with 30 students in all grades. She also taught Sunday School, served as a 4-H leader for many years, and enjoyed time with her family.
She is survived by two sons, Dennis Scheer, Elkhorn, Neb., and Neal Scheer, Ingalls; a daughter, Faye Sitzman, Council Bluffs, Iowa; two sisters-in-law; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Jane Eyer and Mary McKinney; four brothers, Bob Finch, Lyman Finch, Roy Finch and Ward Finch; and a son, Lee Scheer.
Ashburn Funeral Home, Plainview, Neb., was in charge of arrangements.
Annabell Belknap
Annabell Belknap, 75, of Garden City, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born July 25, 1925, at McPherson, the daughter of William Thomas and Amanda A. (Kirkbride) Berry. She grew up in Hutchinson and attended schools there.
A Garden City resident since 1942, she was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church. She enjoyed growing flowers and plants, and also enjoyed birds and fish.
On Sept. 16, 1943, she married Lee H. Belknap at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by three sons, Gerald Lee Belknap, Jimmie Leon Belknap and Donald Eugene Belknap, all of Garden City; two daughters, Joan Fay Silva, Leoti, and Anita Ann Delinger, Deerfield; a brother, Charles Berry, and two sisters, Mary Robertson and Samantha Klein, all of Hutchinson; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson; and nine brothers and sisters.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Roy L. Opie
Graveside service for Roy L. Opie, 82, was to be 3 p.m. today in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating.
Mr. Opie died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born March 21, 1918, at High Point, Mo., the son of Laymond and Stella (Scott) Opie.
A farmer, he had been a Garden City resident since 1981, moving from Lakin. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lakin and the Senior Center of Finney County.
On July 25, 1948, he married Agnes Classen. She died Feb. 1, 1987.
He is survived by a sister, Stella G. Enloe, Russellville, Mo.; a stepsister, Dorothy Childress, Garden City; and his caregiver, Cynthia Robordy, Great Bend.
Memorials are suggested to the Broncbuster Athletic Association, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.
Margarito "Maggie" Ortiz Sr.
LEOTI - Margarito "Maggie" Ortiz Sr., 79, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Long Beach (Calif.) Hospital.
He was born June 15, 1921, at Las Vegas, N.M., the son of Libardo and Dolores Ortiz. A farmer, he had been a Long Beach resident since 1985, moving from Leoti.
Mr. Ortiz was of the Catholic faith, was a member of the American G.I. Forum in Leoti and Garden City, belonged to the Mexican American Ministries and the Leoti VFW, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
In 1953, he married Annie Montoya. She died in 1957. He married Jennie Rodriguez in 1969. She died in 1982. He was also preceded in death by two sons.
He is survived by his wife, Francesca Suarez, whom he married in 1988; six sons, Manuel Barraza and Richard Barraza, both of Houston, Isaac Barraza, Lubbock, Texas, Lawrence Barraza, Rocky Ford, Colo., Tony Barraza, Garden City, and Margarito Ortiz Jr., Atascadero, Calif.; a daughter, Jovita Ortiz DeLeon, Pueblo, Colo.; 26 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leoti. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery
with full military honors conducted.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials to the Margarito Ortiz Sr. Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Estel Lavaun Mahuron
Estel Lavaun Mahuron, 79, of Wichita, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in Wichita.
Born in Finney County on June 22, 1921, she was the daughter of Peter T. and Nelle Naomi (Hughes) Smith.
On May 31, 1941, she married J.P. Mahuron at Kansas City, Mo. A seamstress, she also assisted her husband at Hammond Organ Studio in Garden City prior to their retirement. She enjoyed painting porcelain dolls.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Lavaun Smith, Russell; a sister, Orvillene Williams, Garden City; two granddaughters, four great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1993.
Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to KSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Pet Trust, Trotter Hall, 1700 Denison Ave., Manhattan, KS 66506.
Broadway Mortuary, Wichita, was in charge of arrangements.
Rosemary Fleming Hauser
Rosemary Fleming Hauser, 72, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at her home in Charlottesville, Va. The cause of her death was related to the breast cancer with which she had lived for more than a decade. She died in the care of the Hospice of the Piedmont.
She was born in Garden City on June 28, 1928, the daughter of Arthur M. and Edith Ann Fleming. She graduated from Garden City High School in 1946, attended Colorado Women's College in Denver in 1946-47, and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in fine arts education from Phillips University in Enid, Okla.
She taught elementary school in Lahoma, Okla., in 1950-51 and served as a secretary and administrative assistant of First Baptist Church of Chicago from 1952 to 1956. In 1958-59 when she lived with her parents at 702 N. Third St. in Garden City, she taught at Hutchison Elementary School, where she herself had been a student in the 1930s.
Mrs. Hauser's life and vocation was her family. Whether in her commitment to the League of Women Voters, to the faculty and students of the University of Virginia where her husband taught for many years, or to friends and colleagues beyond Charlottesville, her nurturing spirit was at work.
She served the LWV in various ways, and so too the students whom were welcome at her family's table, no less so than the many academic and diplomatic dignitaries from around the world. And in a commitment to her Garden City roots, she maintained a round robin letter with many of her high school classmates from 1946 to the day of her death.
She had visited the U.K., the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Japan, Malaysia and India, where she spent many years with her family.
She is survived by Walter Hauser, her husband of 51 years; a daughter, Sheila Hauser of Crozet, Va.; a son, Michael Hauser, Durham, N.C.; three grandchildren; her sister, Edith Chandler, Topeka; her brother, Jonathan B. Fleming, Mineral Point, Wis.; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; cousins; and many nieces and nephews.
A remembrance of her life is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 290 Rugby Road in Charlottesville.
Friends in Garden City who wish to honor Mrs. Hauser's memory may do so with contributions to Lee Richardson Zoo, which was a joy to her and her family over many years.
