Elmer W. Haas Jr.
Elmer W. Haas Jr., 84, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born March 4, 1916, at Stafford, the son of Elmer Wadsworth and Bertha Louise (Gorman) Haas.
When he was 9, the family moved to Finney County.
He attended country schools in Finney County and attended Garden City High School.
In his younger years, Mr. Haas worked in a machine shop, at the sugar beet plant and as a truck driver.
He later became a farmer in the Plymell area of Finney County.
His special interests were dancing, woodworking, hunting and fishing.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Garden City, served on the property board and as an elder of the church, and belonged to the Senior Center of Finney County.
On Nov. 6, 1940, he married Charlotte Staley at Garden City.
She died May 7, 1966.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wallace Haas and Glenn Haas; and a sister, Frances Haas.
On Jan. 23, 1971, he married Bernice M. Simpson at Garden City.
She survives.
He is also survived by two stepsons, Terry Simpson, Wichita, and Noel Simpson, Garden City; a stepdaughter, Sandra Russell, McPherson; seven stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
Memorials are suggested to the church or Lutheran Hour, both in care of the funeral home.
Theresa Ellen Taylor
Theresa Ellen Taylor, 59, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla.
A native of Garden City, she graduated from Garden City Junior College.
She lived her adult life in Lanham, Md., and retired to Ocala, Fla., after working as an insurance claims supervisor.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Sherman, Ocala; two sons, James and Kevin, both of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Sister Mary Ellen, Dominican of Great Bend, Rose Ann Lawrence, Burtonsville, Md., and Leona Dater, Spokane, Wash.; two brothers, Silver Dater, Lenexa, and Ed Dater, Oklahoma City; two grandchildren; and 16 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter; her father, August Dater; and a sister, Esther Dater.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, to St. Jude's Catholic Community Church of Ocala, 443 Marion Oaks Drive, Ocala, FL 34473, or to the donor's choice.
Roberts Funeral Home, Ocala, is in charge of arrangements.
Earl Proffitt
Funeral for Earl Proffitt, 89, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald Carter officiating.
Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside honors conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.
Mr. Proffitt died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Evergreen Gardens Assisted Living Center in Garden City.
He was born Oct. 8, 1911, at Coolidge, the son of Luther Edgar and Lena (Cook) Proffitt.
A resident of Garden City since 1943, moving from Goodland, he had been a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Garden City for many years, retiring in 1973.
He had previously worked for the Garden City Herald newspaper, was a projectionist for the old Ritz Theater in Garden City and for the U.S. Army during World War II, and was also known as a handyman.
Mr. Proffitt was a member of First Christian Church, where he was a greeter emeritus, a deacon, a member of the Kum Duble Sunday School class, and was involved with the historical committee and the video ministry.
He was a former member of the Eagles Lodge and the Woodmen of the World, and belonged to the American Association of Retired Persons and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
On May 12, 1943, he married Vola M. Livengood at Garden City.
She died April 15, 2000, at Garden City.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, a sister and a grandson.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald E. Proffitt and Boyd L. Proffitt, both of Garden City, and Donald V. Proffitt, Wichita; three daughters, Vicki L. Proffitt, Garden City, Karen A. James, Gunnison, Colo., and Sandra K. Proffitt, Dodge City; a sister, Ruth Buehler, Great Bend; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Jarred Keith Grice
ULYSSES - Funeral for Jarred Keith Grice, 18, will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mennonite Brethren Church, Ulysses, with the Revs. Mike Holman and Paul Stetz officiating.
Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.
Mr. Grice died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was born Dec. 15, 1981, at Ulysses, the son of Forrest K. and Anita Kay (Russell) Grice.
He was a 2000 graduate of Ulysses High School, was a member of the high school wrestling team, Art Club, Deep Six Band, and First Assembly of God Church, and had won several art awards from Fort Hays State University.
Mr. Grice was a freshman at Dodge City Community College, attending on an art scholarship.
He enjoyed doing yard work for his grandparents, hunting, jet skiing and snow boarding.
He had worked at Duckwalls and Williams Gas Pipeline, both at Ulysses.
He is survived by his parents, Ulysses; a brother, Heath Grice, and a sister, Kimberlee Grice, both of Wichita; his grandparents, Keith and Dona Grice, Ulysses; and Maurice and Mollie Russell, Beaver, Okla.; his great-grandfather, Joe Whitworth, Fresno, Calif.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Margaret Russell Lee.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses.
