Vicente Carmen Bribiesca
Vicente Carmen Bribiesca, 91, of Garden City died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital.
Bribiesca was born July, 19, 1909 in Penjamo, Mexico to Ygnacio and Emilia (Hernandez) Bribiesca.
He moved to Garden City in 1929 and lived here since. Bribiesca was a longtime employee of the city. After his retirement in 1976 he enjoyed gardening and yard work. Bribiesca was also a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church.
On Feb. 18, 1933, he married Luz Medina in Garden City. She died in 1952. In Mexico on Feb. 8, 1956, he married Theresa Mendoza, she survives.
Bribiesca is also survived by 10 sons, Stephen Bribiesca of Pomona, Calif., Jesse Bribiesca, Sr. of Hutchinson, Ramon Bribiesca of Baldwin Park, Calif., Louis Bribiesca of Anaheim, Calif., Albert and Reginald Bribiesca of Downey, Calif., Vicente Bribiesca, Jr. of Garden City, Abel Bribiesca of Garden City, Carlos Bribiesca of Holcomb and Ernesto Bribiesca of Garden City; two daughters, Alvina Bribiesca of Anaheim, Calif., and Martha Bribiesca of Garden City; one brother, Thomas Bribiesca of Los Angeles; two sisters, Ruth Fematt of Commerce, Calif., and Remedius Ledesma of Garden City; and 25 grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with the Rev. Joseph Bahr presiding. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery.
A vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Dominic with rosary following.
Visitation will be from 12 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
William E. Beaton
SCOTT CITY - William E. Beaton, 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
The son of William Fairchild and Rada Burnice (Barger) Beaton, he was born Jan. 22, 1920, in a sod house in southeast Scott County where his father had homesteaded.
A lifetime resident of Scott County, having moved into Scott City in 1975, he was a farmer. He was member of Eagles Lodge No. 3124 at Garden City, and a former member of the Scott County Fair Board, Scott Co-op Board, Farm Bureau Board and Soil Conservation Board, all at Scott City.
On May 23, 1947, he married Arlene June Beeson at Syracuse. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Linda Savolt, Garden City, and Beverly Brown, Overland Park; four sons, William L. Beaton, John C. Beaton and Tom Beaton, all of Scott City, and Dennis C. Beaton, Greeley, Colo.; a niece; a nephew; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Beatrice Wilson and Irene Otte; a niece; and a nephew.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials to the William E. Beaton Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Marcus A. Meng
Marcus A. Meng, 83, of Dodge City, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Western Plains Regional Hospital in Dodge City.
He was born Dec. 12, 1917, in rural Kingman County, the son of Otto A. and Helena (Lipke) Meng. He attended college at Kansas State University and Emporia State University.
A former Finney County resident, he moved to Dodge City in 1980. He was a retired farmer and was owner of Durr-Meng Lincoln Mercury in Dodge City during the 1950s.
Mr. Meng was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral and a 50-year member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 2955, both at Dodge City. He enjoyed cars, bowling, hunting, fishing, traveling in his motorhome and spending time at his winter home at Lake Livingston in Texas.
On June 17, 1940, he married Martha Lee Trail at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Marc Jr., Eucha, Okla., Mike and Greg, both of Garden City; three daughters, Mary Gayle Gard, Littleton, Colo., Linda Loewen, Wichita, and Judi Johnsey, Danville, Ark.; 24 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, George and Ellis; and two sisters, Agnes Hewes and Mary Lou Gifford.
Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Burkhart Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Dodge City, with the Rev. John R. Strasser officiating. Burial will be in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City.

Ivan D. "Dave" Anderson
Ivan D. "Dave" Anderson, 53, a former Garden City resident, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Guadalupe County Hospital in Santa Rosa, N.M.
He was born Feb. 20, 1947, at Webb City, Okla., the son of Herman Edward and Edith (Smith) Anderson Jr. He attended schools in Garden City, Kit Carson, Colo., and Deerfield.
After his schooling, he joined the U.S. Army and became a career man in the Army, mainly working in the wire-guided missile system department. After his discharge in 1993, he worked as a truck driver and in construction.
Mr. Anderson had recently moved from New Mexico to Shidler, Okla. His special interests were computers, woodworking, electronics and mechanics.
On Aug. 21, 1968, he married Vicki A. Phillips at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Theresa L. Anderson-Canada and Laura D. Edge, both of Jesup, Ga.; a son, Timothy D. Anderson, Chaparral, N.M.; a stepdaughter, Sindy Richardson, Cordele, Ga.; eight brothers, William Anderson, White Fish, Mont., Jimmie Anderson, Alamogordo, N.M., Ronald Anderson, Wiggins, Colo., Tommy Anderson and Kenneth Anderson, both of Lakin, Richard Anderson, Holcomb, George Anderson, Garden City, and Gordon Anderson, Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Susan Graves, Topeka; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Bobby Anderson and Jerry Anderson.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery
with graveside rites conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Fred Charles Smith
SUBLETTE - Fred Charles Smith, 60, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at his home in Sublette.
He was born May 9, 1940, at Liberal, the son of LaVerne C. and Edith Margaret (Gillette) Smith.
A lifetime resident of Sublette, he was a farmer and a former transportation supervisor for USD 374 for several years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Sublette and belonged to the Sublette Jaycees for several years.
Survivors include a son, Scott B. Smith, Sublette; a daughter, Diana Kay Metzler, DeBeque, Colo.; two grandchildren; and several aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Banner Cemetery, Sublette, with the Rev. Mary Al Titus officiating.

Virginia Mae Matthis
Virginia Mae Matthis, 71, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at her home in Bella Vista, Ark.
Born Jan. 15, 1929, at Seminole, Okla., she was the daughter of Cecil John Semler and Effie Sarah Sullivan-Semler. After the death of her parents, she made her home with her aunt, Celia Jean Semler-Bryant, in Liberal.
She attended schools in Liberal and attended Mount Carmel Academy in Wichita. As a young girl, she sang and danced, and she later was a choir member and soloist on radio station KFH and at her church. She continued to be soloist with church groups and sang for social functions until she had throat surgery.
She and her first husband, Raymond D. Headrick, had three children. Her love for children led her to work with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Methodist Youth Fellowship, Civil Air Patrol and other organizations in which her children were active.
At one time, she worked for Garden National Bank in Garden City and for Boeing in Huntsville, Ala. She was a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville. Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Bella Vista in 1996.
She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Matthis Jr.; two daughters, Cynthia L. Headrick-Heer, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Celia D. Headrick-Blair, Wichita; a son, Craig A. Headrick, Huntsville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hiwasse (Ark.) Church of the Nazarene, with burial in Bella Vista Memorial Cemetery.

Jackson W. Black
ULYSSES - Funeral for Jackson W. Black, 78, will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Ulysses, with the Revs. Dennis Zimmerman and Floyd Daharsh officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.
Mr. Black died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Dec. 25, 1921, at Russell, the son of H.O. and Katheryn (Schmitt) Black.
A Ulysses resident since 1972, he was an exploration supervisor for Amoco for 34 years, retiring in 1980. During World War II, he served in the 8th Air Force as a flight engineer and a gunner on a B-17.
Mr. Black was a lifetime member of VFW 6240 of Russell, American Legion Post No. 79 of Ulysses, and St. John's Episcopal Church of Ulysses. He loved to fish and hunt and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He married Loretta Zorn, who preceded him in death on July 20, 1970. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Black and "Junior" Black.
On July 5, 1975, he married Marilyn Hands-Hacker at Ulysses. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Janet Currie, Canyon, Texas; four stepsons, Raymond Hacker Jr., Chandler, Ariz., Clifford Hacker, Emporia, Frosty Hacker, Chandler, Okla., and Chuck Hacker, Ulysses; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Grimes, Ulysses; four sisters, Eva Lee Layton, Riverside, Calif., Shirley Schmidt, Farmington, N.M., Donnie Darrell, Springfield, Mo., and Patty Balloun, Russell; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.
