Ruth Walker
Graveside service for Ruth Walker, 88, was 3 p.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating.
Miss Walker died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Feb. 6, 1912, at Lowry City, Mo., the daughter of Charley D. and Lilly Pearl (Greenwell) Walker. A Garden City resident since 1958, moving from Kingman, she worked in Garden City as a social worker for the State of Kansas.
Miss Walker was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Senior Center of Finney County, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Business Professional Women and belonged to a bridge club, all in Garden City.
She is survived by two sisters, Berniece Minert, Dunning, Neb., and Martha F. Mullins, Garden City; and 12 nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City.
Marie Simmons
SUBLETTE - Funeral for Marie Simmons, 98, of Garden City and formerly of Sublette, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Sublette, with the Rev. Mary Al Titus officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.
Mrs. Simmons died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at her granddaughter's home in rural Copeland.
She was born Aug. 9, 1902, at Floral, the daughter of Milton and Gertrude Janella (Rogers) Kirkpatrick. She moved to Ford County in 1908, to Haskell County in May 1928, into Sublette in 1973, and to Garden City in the spring of 1993.
Mrs. Simmons was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Haskell County Garden Club and a former member of several civic clubs in Sublette.
On Oct. 22, 1920, she married Edward Albert Simmons at Windthorst. He died June 7, 1973. She was also preceded in death by a son, Edward Albert "Eddie" Simmons Jr., on Dec. 27, 1938; a daughter, Jeane Rixon; a son-in-law; six brothers, Richard Kirkpatrick, Fred Kirkpatrick, Ralph Kirkpatrick, Lynn Kirkpatrick, Wayne Kirkpatrick and James Kirkpatrick; and a sister, Lucille Davidson.
She is survived by two daughters, June Lawder, Peyton, Colo., and Doris Kleysteuber, Garden City; a son-in-law, Paul Rixon, Sublette; a brother, Allen Kirkpatrick, Havana; a sister, Daisy Smith, Nevada, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Alvin Mohr
SUBLETTE - Funeral for Alvin Mohr, 75, of WaKeeney, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, WaKeeney, with the Rev. Randy Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in WaKeeney City Cemetery.
Mr. Mohr died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney.
He was born May 9, 1925, in Trego County, the son of Jacob and Bertha (Struss) Mohr. He graduated from Trego Community High School, WaKeeney, in 1942.
A retired farmer, he had been an employee of the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service since 1953, retiring this year. A lifetime resident of WaKeeney, he was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge No. 3774, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
On April 18, 1948, he married Frieda Dietz at Zion Lutheran Church in rural WaKeeney. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Tom Mohr and Richard Mohr, both of WaKeeney, and Randy Mohr, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Janice Sultzer, Hays, and Nancy Farmer, Sublette; two brothers, Martin Mohr, Collyer, and Ernie Mohr, WaKeeney; two sisters, Carolyn Schoenthaler, WaKeeney, and Wilma Dietz, Ogallah; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson and a sister, Marie Lahman.

Helen Marie Koerperich
Helen Marie Koerperich, 87, of Garden City, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita.
Mrs. Koerperich was born in Leipzig, Germany on Jan. 22, 1913, to Bernard and Marie (Pierdzioch) Jaster. Her family immigrated to Dresden, Kan., in 1923.
On Sept. 10, 1930, she married Bernard Koerperich in Selden. She was a resident of Selden until 1992 when she moved to Garden City.
Mrs. Koerperich was a homemaker who loved spending time with her eight children, 43 grandchildren and 68 great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed crocheting, reading, painting and gardening.
She did not have an opportunity to complete her formal education until 1976 when she received her high school equivalency diploma. That same year she was recognized as an Honorary Alumni of Selden-Class of 1932. She continued her education with outreach classes through Colby Community College earning 29 credits in art.
Mrs. Koerperich was a member of St. Mary's Church, St. Jude's Altar Society and Senior Citizens RSVP.
She is survived by four sons, Richard Koerperich of Selden, Edward Koerperich of Newport Beach, Calif., James Koerperich of Garden City, and Ronald Koerperich of Topeka; four daughters, Agnes Swank and Bernadette Austin, both of Garden City, Leona Rogers of Belleville, and Judy Sloan of Pawhuska, Okla.; one brother, John Jaster of Chico, Calif.; 43 grandchildren; and 68 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; one brother, Bernard Jaster; a son-in-law; and six grandchildren.
A vigil service was 5 p.m. Dec. 17 at Pauls Funeral Home in Selden. Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Dec. 18 at Sacred Heart Church in Selden with the Revs. James Hoover, Bill Surmeier, James Baker and Daryl Olmstead and Sister Marilyn Wall officiating. Burial followed in Selden Cemetery.

Thomas E. "Tom" Hicks
Funeral for Thomas E. "Tom" Hicks, 82, of Liberal, was 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Liberal, with the Rev. Phil Shull officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Mr. Hicks, a former Garden City resident, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born Nov. 4, 1918, at Brownsville, Tenn., the son of Thomas C. and Mattie L. (Tapp) Hicks. After graduating high school at Brownsville, he entered management training with Krager's and was promoted to store manager almost immediately.
He entered the U.S. Army in which he served in Africa, Italy and Sicily. Upon returning home, he went to work for the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in Brownsville and Memphis, Tenn., and later transferred to Abilene, Texas.
In February 1943, he married Mildred R. McPherson at Brownsville. He and his family moved to Liberal in May 1960 and he worked for Sheperd Service. He later owned and operated the GE Appliance Store and had a sub-Post Office in the store. He also opened stores in Garden City and Wellington. He later began the Tom Hicks Appliance Store which he operated for many years.
For several years, Mr. Hicks built several apartment houses in Liberal. In 1984, he began Tom Hicks BBQ Pit Fine Food which he operated for about 10 years before selling. He then began selling barbecue pits to others and training the owners.
Mr. Hicks served as president of the Liberal Rotary Club, was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, served as president of the Methodist Men, and he and his wife served as sponsors of the MYF for many years, and he was active with the chamber of commerce.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Dr. Thomas E. Hicks Jr., Emporia; a daughter, Pam Hicks, Garden City; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, two sisters and one son.

Donald W. Hapes
Donald W. Hapes, 67, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, in Garden City.
He was born here on March 4, 1933, the son of Thomas Edward and Pauline (Plankenhorn) Hapes. After graduating from Garden City High School, he started working with the family business, Hapes Truck Line Inc., and then began Don Hapes Trucking Inc.
A lifetime resident of Garden City, he was a member of the Kansas Motor Carriers Association. In his earlier years he enjoyed flying and later he enjoyed fishing, hunting and his grandchildren's activities.
On March 1, 1951, he married Irene B. Bennett at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Donnie Hapes and Doug Hapes, and two daughters, Susan Snyder and Sandra Christian, all of Garden City; his mother, Medford, Ore.; a brother, Arlen Hapes, Garden City; a sister, Karen Lee, Medford; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will be later in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Heart Hospital, in care of the funeral home.
