Caron Mae Benavidez
HUGOTON - Caron Mae Benavidez, 40, of Hugoton, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.
She was born July 14, 1960, at Pampa, Texas, the daughter of Howard Maynard and Betty Jean (Popejoy) Hayes.
Mrs. Benavidez had been a Hugoton resident for 28 years, moving from Liberal. A homemaker, she had worked as a waitress at the Jet. She attended Bethel Friends Church in Hugoton and supported the girls' softball team.
On March 9, 1985, she married Robin Steve Benavidez at Hugoton. He survives. She is also survived by two daughters, Mandi Towner, Hugoton, and Summer Benavidez, of the home; a brother, Craig Hayes, Denver; three sisters, Cheryl Cabello, Denver, Carla Freeman, Meade, and Connie Hayes, Hugoton; her mother, Hugoton; and one grandchild. Her father died March 23, 1993.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bethel Friends Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Eric Mason officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Memorials to the Benavidez family may be sent in care of Citizens State Bank.

Walter Bockelman
DIGHTON - Walter Bockelman, 94, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Lane County Long Term Care in Dighton.
He was born Dec. 14, 1915, at Alma, Mo., the son of August Henry and Dorothea (Ehmke) Bockelman. He attended Walnut Valley School in Lane County and the Lane County Community High School.
Mr. Bockelman had been a lifelong farmer/stockman in Lane County with the exception of a short time when he returned to Missouri to work on area farms. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He enjoyed gardening and being with his grandchildren.
On Sept. 29, 1940, he married Pauline Meineka at Concordia, Mo. She died Dec. 11, 1994.
He is survived by a son, Dale Lee Bockelman, Dighton; two daughters, Betty Jane Jones, Miami, Okla., and Mary Lou Borell, Dighton; two brothers, Earl Bockelman, Lakin, and Theodore Bockelman, Dighton; a sister, Louise Bockelman, Scott City; and three grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton, with the Rev. John Riebhoff officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Lutheran Church Missionary Fund, in care of the funeral home.
Robert E. Bruner
LAKIN - Robert E. Bruner, 67, of Lakin, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
He was born March 26, 1933, at Lakin, the son of William Edgar and Mable Geneva (Armstrong) Bruner. A lifetime resident of Lakin and Kendall, he graduated from Lakin High School in 1951.
Mr. Bruner had worked as a mechanic for IBP for several years, and had previously worked for KN Energy, Wakefield Drilling and Cheyenne Drilling Co., and had also been engaged in farming.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lakin and had helped teach Sunday School classes and participated in the church choir at one time. He belonged to the Men's Bible Study group, helped with Boy Scouts and helped coach Little League baseball. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955.
He enjoyed collecting and selling aluminum cans, model airplanes, fishing, reading, playing cards and board games, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
On May 28, 1955, he married Tillie Nissim at Glendale, Calif. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Robert W. Bruner, Wichita; a daughter, Barbara Fanning, southwest Kearny County; two sisters, Geneva Mable Osborn, Lakin, and Sara Jane Thomaczek, Arlington, Texas; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Bruner and Edgar Bruner.
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Lakin, with the Revs. David Bolz and Juanita Wiseman officiating. Private family burial will take place later in Lakin.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.
Kewen C. Childers
ULYSSES - Kewen C. Childers, 84, of Ulysses, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.
He was born July 25, 1916, at Amarillo, Texas, the son of Kewen and Mora Belle (Clayton) Childers.
A former resident of Booneville, Ark., he moved to Ulysses in 1955. He was involved in farming, worked as a mechanic and retired after working with REA. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Ione, Ark.
On July 31, 1937, he married Margaret Verlyne (Tarpley) Childers at Tucumcari, N.M. She died April 6, 1995. He was also preceded in death by three brothers.
Survivors include four sons, Orville Wayne Childers, Waukegan, Ill., Stanley Richard Childers, Wichita, Leon Dale Childers, Iola, and Donald Lynn Childers, Ulysses; a daughter, Mora Jean Hammer, Ulysses; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Rose M. Naab
Vigil service for Rose M. Naab, 97, will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Naab died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born Nov. 7, 1903, at Modoc, the daughter of Mike and Angelina (Biel) Paul.
A Finney County resident since 1941, moving from Kinsley, she had lived in Garden City since 1974. She was a homemaker and belonged to St. Dominic Catholic Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors.
On Sept. 22, 1925, she married Joseph J. Naab at Marienthal. He died in December 1953 at Garden City. She was also preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
She is survived by four sons, Harold Naab and Ronald Naab, both of Garden City, Charles Naab, Liberal, and George Naab, Georgetown, Texas; a daughter, Illene Cockriel, Garden City; a brother, Harry Paul, Marienthal; three sisters, Blanche Brungardt, Garden City, Helen Pelnar, Holcomb, and Christina Ulbrich, Hutchinson; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 1 to 8 p.m. today and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Meda W. Whittington
Johnson CITY - Funeral for Meda W. Whittington, 91, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating. Burial will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.
Whittington died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson City.
She was born May 24, 1909, at Meg, Ark., the daughter of Charles and Emma (Inman) Hall.
On Aug. 13, 1925, she married A.E. Whittington at Cecil, Ark. They moved to Johnson City in 1946 so he could pastor at Pilgrim Holiness Church. They moved several years later and served at a number of churches in Kansas before returning to Johnson City to retire in 1962.
Whittington had worked at the Stanton County Hospital in the laundry and dietary departments, and was a member of Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church. A licensed minister, she had been a Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years.
She is survived by a son, Erman Whittington, Alton, Mo.; three daughters, Ruth Armstrong, Ulysses, Vivian Fisher, Johnson City, and Glenda McVey, Balko, Okla.; two sisters, Lois Burton, Branch, Ark., and Lillian Mayfield, Fort Smith, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1969. She was also preceded in death by a son, Enid Whittington; four brothers; and one great-grandson.
