Agatha M. Gruben
SCOTT CITY - Funeral services for Agatha M. Gruben, 96, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mrs. Gruben died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
She was born Jan. 3, 1904, in a half dugout and half sod house on the family homestead in the Valley Township of Scott County, the daughter of Clyde and Hattie (Beal) Rictor.
A lifetime resident of Scott County, she was a teacher in several small school houses in Scott County and was a homemaker in her later years.
Mrs. Gruben was a member of the Garden Club, HGL Club, Homemakers EHU and Kansas Kolorful Arts and was a Girl Scout leader.
On April 22, 1925, she married Ervin Gruben in Scott County. He died March 6, 1995, in Scott City. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ervie and Mildred; and a brother, Ross.
She is survived by a brother, Guy Chapin, Kingsley; two sisters, Mabel Campbell, Scott City, and Emily Coryell, Flagler, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County VIP Center or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.
Virginia E. "Peggy" Pinnick
ULYSSES - Virginia E. "Peggy" Pinnick, 84, a longtime resident of Ulysses, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at her home in Yuma, Ariz.
She was born Feb. 10, 1916, at Fort Smith, Ark., the daughter of Jay S. and Grace (Shafer) Parker. She grew up in Hill City, attended Kansas State University and was a lifetime member of Alpha Delta Pi.
A Ulysses resident since 1946, she had worked for Stubbs and Wesley Law Firm in Ulysses and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses and the Priscilla Club, and served on the board of directors at Grant County Bank. She had enjoyed the last several years spending time at her home in Yuma.
On Sept. 26, 1936, she married Floyd V. Pinnick at Manhattan. He survives. Other survivors are two sons, Thomas J. Pinnick, Ulysses, and Dr. Robert V. Pinnick, Bend, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Edna G. Hesler
CIMARRON - Graveside service for Edna G. Hesler, 97, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Cimarron Cemetery, with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating.
Mrs. Hesler died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron.
She was born Sept. 22, 1903, at Lorraine, the daughter of Edward T. and Gertrude (Jeffries) Schwartz.
A longtime Cimarron resident, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.
On June 9, 1926, she married Jess C. Hesler at Medicine Lodge. He died Nov. 9, 1988.
She is survived by two sons, Leroy, Great Bend, and Carl, Wichita; a daughter, Mildred Seley, Topeka; a brother, Arthur Schwartz, Kiowa; a sister, Mildred Bullard, Enid, Okla.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Burkhart's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Cimarron.
Celeste Eileen Eck
Vigil service for Celeste Eileen Eck, 48, of Overland Park, will be 7 p.m. Friday, with the funeral scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sharon. The Rev. Anthony Suellentrop will officiate. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.
Mrs. Eck died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Wichita.
She was born Sept. 23, 1952, at Wichita, the daughter of Leo J. Sr. and Dorothy M. (Meier) Eck. She graduated from Wichita County High School in Leoti in 1970, attended St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, and graduated from the Kansas City School of Medical & Dental Assistants in 1976.
An Overland Park resident since 1975, she had worked as an assistant administrator for 21 years at Heartland Hematology-Oncology in Kansas City, Mo.
She is survived by three sons, Jacob George Gantz, Joshua Jon Gantz and Jamieson Paul Gantz, all of Overland Park; the children's father, Jeffrey Gantz, Overland Park; her mother, Ulysses; two brothers, Leo J. Eck Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dexter P. Eck, Ulysses; and a sister, Angela M. McGillivray, Tulsa, Okla. She was preceded in death by her father.
Visitation hours are from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Home, Kiowa. Memorials are suggested to the Gantz Children Education Fund, in care of the funeral home.
Loren B. Crawford Jr.
Loren B. Crawford Jr., 88, of Albuquerque, N.M., died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000.
A former Garden City resident, he was born Feb. 25, 1912, at Kansas City, Mo. He lived in Winfield during his youth. He had resided in Albuquerque for 22 years.
In 1934, he received his bachelor of arts and music degrees from Southwestern College in Winfield, and was awarded a master's degree in music from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester in New York.
During World War II, Mr. Crawford served in the 14th Armored Division for three years and saw combat duty in the European Theater of Operations.
Mr. Crawford had taught 19 years in the state of Kansas at Burden, McPherson College, Pratt and Garden City. He taught six years in the Pasco, Wash., public schools and 14 years in Ogden, Utah, where he was string coordinator in the Ogden City Schools for one year and an assistant professor of music and orchestra director at Weber State University there for 13 years.
Retiring from the university in 1978, he moved to Albuquerque, where he was a private violin teacher. After retiring in 1986, he was an avid gardener and loved to travel with his wife, Margaret (Fry) Crawford, whom he married on Aug. 10, 1940 at Omaha, Neb.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Anne L. Kole, Albuquerque, and Nancy J. Townsend, Redlands, Calif.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service was Nov. 15 at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Albuquerque, with the Rev. Larry Moss officiating. Burial was Nov. 16 in Santa Fe (N.M.) National Cemetery.

Edward Lester Francis
Graveside service for Edward Lester Francis, 79, will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating.
Mr. Francis died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at his home in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 10, 1921, at Buffalo, Mo., the son of Gladys Francis.
A Garden City resident since 1970, moving from Tribune, he had been a truck driver for Smith Sand Co., Garden City. He was a member of the Catholic faith and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On April 30, 1963, he married Leona Carterman at Tribune. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Brett Mead, of the home; a daughter, Connie Green, Shuttuck, Okla.; an adopted daughter, Melody Harris, Garden City; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Emory Lester Francis.
Visitation hours are until 5 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Edward L. Francis Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Verda Belle King Garner
SATANTA - Verda Belle King Garner, 77, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at her home in Satanta.
She was born Sept. 14, 1923, at Satanta, the daughter of Elmer A. and Ida S. (Sorum) Moore.
On Dec. 26, 1942, she married Bill J. King at Lyons. On Dec. 14, 1974, she married Robert Boyd Garner at Garden City. He died May 2, 1982.
Mrs. Garner had worked for the ASCS Office in Finney County and at Century Refining Co. Insurance in Garden City, and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Garden City. She enjoyed her farm and liked to go out and mow. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo with her friends and spending time with her family.
She is survived by a son, Bill A. King, Garden City; two stepsons, James Garner, Arkansas City, and Duane Garner, Cincinnati; a sister, Wanda Moore, Satanta; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Larry Myers officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette.
