Emma June Pierce
SUBLETTE - Graveside service for Emma June Pierce, 78, was to be 11 this morning in Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, with the Rev. Alan Hunter officiating.
Mrs. Pierce died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at her son's home in Sublette. Formerly of Eureka, she had recently moved to Sublette to be with her son and daughter-in-law.
She was born April 13, 1922, at Nowata, Okla., the daughter of Claude and Olivia (Blauvelt) McDaniel. The family moved from Oklahoma to the Eureka area when she was an infant. She was raised in the Reece and Eureka communities and attended Reece schools.
A homemaker, Mrs. Pierce had worked as a nurse's aide at the Lyndon Nursing Home in Eureka. She attended Jefferson Street Baptist Church in Eureka.
She is survived by three sons, Claude, St. Paul, Dayton, Sublette, and T.C. Ward, address unknown; a daughter, Olivia Frazier, Muskogee, Okla.; a sister, Regina Oyler, and a half brother, Clarence Robinson, both of Neodesha; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Dewey Russell Ward; and six brothers.

Alberto R. Orosco
ULYSSES - Vigil service for Alberto R. Orosco, 71, will be 7 tonight at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Rev. Louis Trung Dinh Hoang will officiate at both services. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.
Mr. Orosco died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses, where he had been a resident for about two years.
He was born Feb. 6, 1929, at Dodge City, the son of Elijhio and Guaealupe (Rodriguez) Orosco.
As a young man he moved from Dodge City to Ulysses. A farm hand, he worked in the Ulysses area. He was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, and enjoyed fishing, dancing, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He and Martha Garcia were married in Ulysses. She died Oct. 20, 1993. He was also preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Orosco and Lee Orosco, both of Ulysses; four daughters, Deanna Guardiola, Lakin, Tina Gorman and Berta Gonzales, both of Ulysses, and Mary Martinez, Lawrence; a sister, Patty Gutierres, Gardner; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

R. Eugene "Gene" Kopper
CIMARRON - R. Eugene "Gene" Kopper, 79, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron.
He was born Jan. 1, 1921, at Kismet, the son of Peter B. and Elizabeth (Krehbiel) Kopper. In 1930, the family moved to Ingalls where he grew up on a farm. He graduated from Ingalls High School in 1939 and attended one semester at Garden City Community College in 1939.
In 1942, Mr. Kopper entered Civilian Public Service and served at various sites in the United States until he returned home in 1946 and began farming. He was a member of Valleyview Bible Church, Cimarron.
On Sept. 26, 1948, he married Tillie Reimer at Corn, Okla. In 1962, they moved to the family farm north of Cimarron where he farmed until retiring in 1998.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Dale Kopper, Hutchinson, Kent Kopper, Cimarron, and Bryce Kopper, Garden City; two brothers, Harvey Kopper, Wichita, and Richard Kopper, Cimarron; two sisters, Ruth Hiebert, Lodi, Calif., and Betty Kopper, Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Valleyview Bible Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Stuart Pederson officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Pearl E. Hall
SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Pearl E. Hall, 92, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mrs. Hall died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born Feb. 22, 1908, at Seguin, the daughter of Arthur J. and Bessie May (Howard) Gross.
On July 23, 1932, she married Robert A. Hall at Colby. They lived on a farm northeast of Goodland, in Sherman County, until moving to Penrose, Colo., in 1945. They moved to Canon City, Colo., in 1963 and to Scott City in 1973. A homemaker, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the VIP Center.
Her husband died Feb. 11, 1994, at Scott City. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
She is survived by a son, Benny Hall, Scott City; two daughters, Mabel Stoker, Canon City, and Leta Akins, Scott City; two brothers, William Gross, Lexington, Neb., and Willard Gross, Burlington, Colo.; a sister, Ruth Blair, Midland, Mich.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the VIP Center, both in care of the funeral home.
Rita L. Connell
Former Garden City resident Rita L. Connell, 85, of Arkansas City, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.
She was born Nov. 6, 1915, at Hamilton, the daughter of James and Irene (Probasco) Lewis. Educated in the Hamilton schools, she graduated from high school in 1933.
On March 16, 1935, she married Manley Pearce. They made their home in Madison and Russell. On Sept. 30, 1945, she married A.D. Koen and they lived in Russell and Chase. On April 23, 1977, she married Jack Connell at Garden City where they made their home.
Mrs. Connell moved to Arkansas City in 1996. She was a secretary, a music store clerk and taught piano during her life. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Arkansas City, United Methodist Women and the Ark City Music & Dramatics Club.
She is survived by a son, Allen Koen, Houston; two daughters, Marilyn O'Hara, Arkansas City, and Sharon Proffitt, Bozeman, Mont.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her three husbands; a brother, James Lewis Jr.; two sisters, Oma Smith and Coralee Ball; and a grandson.
Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Parker Cemetery, Arkansas City, with the Rev. Lance Carrithers officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.
Ronald William Thomson
HUGOTON - Ronald William Thomson, 87, of Manitou Springs, Colo., died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
He was born Feb. 1, 1913, at Plains, the son of William A. and Edith (Campbell) Thomson. He graduated from Moscow High School in 1931 and had lived in the Moscow area for several years.
On Oct. 8, 1938, he married Mary Belle Wright at Moscow. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Alan Richard Thomson, Seattle, and David Lee Thomson, Peyton, Colo.; two daughters, Nancy Zoe Cathro, Clinton, Md., and Roni ReNee Norman, Cripple Creek, Colo.; a sister, Bea Reazin, Hutchinson; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Moscow Cemetery, with the Rev. Larry Bradford officiating.
Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Gene "Doc" Berghaus
LAKIN - Funeral for Dr. Gene "Doc" Berghaus, 73, of Elkhart, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Elkhart, with the Revs. Kenton Van and Terrell Giddens officiating. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Graceland Cemetery, Meade.
Mr. Berghaus, a veterinarian, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at his home in Elkhart.
He was born July 19, 1927, at Meade, the son of Frank and Gertrude (Thornsberry) Berghaus.
An Elkhart resident since 1963, he was a member of the United Methodist Church and VFW Post No. 3162.
On March 20, 1954, he married Mary Kay Sims at Meade. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Boyd Eugene Berghaus, Charlotte, N.C., and Scott Alan Berghaus, Lenexa; a daughter, Pamela Kay Simmons, Lakin; a brother, Jack Berghaus, Meade; and five grandchildren.
