Jose E. Lopez
Vigil service for Jose E. Lopez, 91, a former area resident, will be 6 tonight at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bayard, Neb.
Another vigil service is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. CDT Saturday at the church in Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mr. Lopez died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard.
He was born Aug. 27, 1909, at Gomez, Palacio, Durango, Mexico, the son of Luis and Tiburcia (Estrada) Lopez. He and his sister, Grace, moved with their parents from Mexico to the United States when he was about 9 months old.
The family settled in Deerfield, where he attended country schools before beginning work in the fields with his parents, thinning beets and doing various farm work around the Deerfield area. He was also a temporary worker for the Union Pacific Railroad and Great Western Sugar Factory in Garden City.
When he was 21, he married Patrosinia Gonzales. They moved to Scott City, where he worked as a hired man for a wheat and cattle rancher before moving to Bayard. The family worked the fields in the summer and he worked for the sugar factory. He later worked at the Bayard Elevator until transferring to Simplot, retiring from there in April 1975.
After his wife's death in December 1975, he lived alone for a few years before moving to East Lawn Manor. After suffering a stroke in February, he moved to Chimney Rock Villa.
Mr. Lopez enjoyed music and played with several bands including the "Old Timers Band" from Bayard and a country western band while living in Scott City.
He is survived by his children, Alex Lopez, Bridgeport, Neb., Alice Herrera, Garden City, Angie Navarro, Phoenix, Gloria Muniz, Carmen Arsiaga, Mary Auman, Joe Lopez Jr. and Frank Lopez, all of Lincoln, Neb., Lucille Vera, Bayard, Jane Stark, Bristow, Okla., Tony Lopez, Grand Island, Neb., Louis Lopez, Madison, Neb., Henry Lopez, Wilber, Neb., and Lori Matthiessen, Milford, Neb.; 47 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister and four grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Bayard or to the donor's choice, both in care of Bayard Memorial Chapel.
Vernon L. Dickerson
ULYSSES - Vernon L. Dickerson, 65, of Emporia, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the V.A. Hospital in Topeka.
He was born Dec. 14, 1934, at Tyrone, Okla., the son of Robert G. and Virginia Marie (Byers) Dickerson. He grew up in Liberal and graduated from Liberal High School.
Mr. Dickerson had served in the U.S. Army. Retired, he enjoyed football and playing poker.
He is survived by a daughter, Shelly Morgan, Ulysses; two sons, Johnny L. Dickerson, Glendive, Mont., and Richard D. Dickerson, Enscanta, Ore.; his mother, Holton; two brothers, Lloyd Dickerson, Indianapolis, and Robert Dickerson, Odessa, Texas; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Don Dickerson; and a granddaughter.
Cremation is planned. A private family memorial service will be conducted.
Newcomer Family Funeral Home, Topeka, is in charge of arrangements.
Orval Edward Butler
Orval Edward Butler, 55, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at his home in Garden City.
He was born Oct. 4, 1945, at Goodland, the son of Lawrence and Ellen (Motsinger) Butler.
A Garden City resident since 1967, moving from Goodland, he enjoyed working on old cars, hunting, fishing and working for farmers. He attended Church of the Brethren in Garden City.
He is survived by two sons, Edward Butler, Wichita, and Chance Butler, Garden City; two daughters, Pamela Butler, Mitchell, S.D., and Kristina Butler, Garden City; his mother, Doris Wenger, Holyrood; three brothers, Fred Butler, Ellsworth, Lawrence Butler, Penrose, Colo., and Dee Wenger of Beverly; five sisters, Patty Gillan, Carol Hernandez and Dalinda Hernandez, all of Ulysses, Judith Herwig, San Antonio, and Sandra Kay Blackmore, Lyons; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gary Dale Butler; an infant brother; and a daughter, Ilena Butler.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Church of the Brethren, Garden City, with the Rev. Gary Meeks officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. MST Friday in Goodland Cemetery, Goodland.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. A memorial has been established for the family, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
Alice Wilcox
DIGHTON - Funeral for Alice Wilcox, 86, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilcox died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.
She was born March 24, 1914, in Lane County, the daughter of Dennis and Lena (Hoffsmith) Mulville. She attended Sutton Grade School in Lane County and graduated from Dighton High School in 1933.
A lifetime Lane County resident, with the exception of 1923 to 1926 when the family lived in Edina, Mo., she had been an apprentice hair dresser for Blanche McKelvy before marrying O.C. Wilcox on June 3, 1935, at Scott City. After her marriage, she worked as the bookkeeper for Wilcox Trucking.
Mrs. Wilcox was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton. Her special interests were knitting, sewing, needlepoint, quilting and cooking.
Her husband died June 9, 2000. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Mulville.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Honstead, Dighton; four nieces; and two nephews.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to Lane County Long Term Care, in care of the funeral home.
Carla M. Osborn
SCOTT CITY - Carla M. Osborn, 72, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at her home in Scott City.
She was born June 9, 1928, at Chivington, Colo., the daughter of Carl and Rose (Finney) Brandon.
A Scott City resident since 1974, moving from Eads, Colo., she was a homemaker. In her earlier years, she attended various First Christian and Methodist churches.
In 1949, she married Ed G. Osborn at Sheridan Lake, Colo. He died Sept. 12, 1981, at Eads.
She is survived by five sons, Eddie W. Osborn, California, Douglas W. Osborn and Allen M. Osborn, both of Scott City, Lyle M. Osborn, Larned, and Darrell L. Osborn, Newton; a daughter, Sheila "Sissy" Phillips, Scott City; a brother, Ralph Brandon; three sisters, Wilmina Machino, Erma Decker and Ethel Alandas; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials to the Carla M. Osborn Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Phyllis Ballantyne
Phyllis Ballantyne, 79, formerly of Liberal, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Infinia at Central Topeka.
She was born Jan. 15, 1921, at Hartley, Texas, the daughter of Andrew and Clara (Henke) Roenfeldt. A homemaker, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Liberal.
On June 4, 1941, she married Ralph Ballantyne at Garden City. He died June 7, 1998. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Louise Ballantyne, in 1954.
Survivors include a son, James L. Ballantyne, Topeka; two daughters, Margaret Ann Wheeler, Fayetteville, N.C., and Susan Jean Sanderson, Hutchinson; two brothers, Martin Roenfeldt, Lakeland, Fla., and Herbert Roenfeldt, Dodge City; a sister, Elsie Robinson, Washington, D.C.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Newcomer Family Funeral Home, Topeka. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
