Kathy L. Hewes

INGALLS - Funeral for Kathy L. Hewes, 61, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Ingalls Community Bible Church, with the Rev. Mike Whalen officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Mrs. Hewes died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Western Plains Regional Hospital in Dodge City.

She was born Feb. 20, 1939, at Okarche, Okla., the daughter of William Franklin and Ruth (Wilson) Stangl.

An Ingalls resident since 1972, moving from Dodge City, she was a retired deputy clerk for the Gray and Ford county court systems and helped with the family farm. She was the secretary for the Kansas Chapter of the Avion Club.

In March 1957, she married Tommy L. Slate at El Reno, Okla. He died in May 1970. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Stangl, Edward Stangl and Thomas Stangl.

On May 20, 1972, she married Herbert E. "Herb" Hewes at Dodge City. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Ron Hewes, Dodge City; three daughters, Sheryl Burl, Cimarron, Linda Johnson, North Canton, Ohio, and Patricia "Pat" Grant, Akron, Ohio; a brother, Donald Stangl, Perry, Okla.; two sisters, Lillian Davis, El Reno, and Loretta Bright, Norman, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Burkhart's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral chapel.

Don E. Bruner

Don E. Bruner, 29, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Denver, from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident.

He was the grandson of Lena Goss, and the nephew of Darrell Goss and Larry Goss, all of Garden City.

A lifetime resident of Colorado Springs, he was born there on Dec. 30, 1970, the son of Doyne E. and Velda Darlene Bruner.

Mr. Bruner was a parts manager for Apex Sports. He was a member of the American Motorcycle Association and the Motorcycle Road Racing Association, and won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in the 250 Pro Class in 2000.

He is survived by his parents; a sister, Dana Stokes; a brother, Thomas E. Bruner; a nephew; three nieces; and several cousins.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Briarhurst Manor Inn, Manitou Springs, Colo., with a luncheon to follow the service. Private inurnment will take place.

Memorials are suggested to the Don E. Bruner Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Wells Fargo Bank, P.O. Box 400, Colorado Springs, CO 80901-0400, Attention: Lea Roads.

Nolan Funeral Home, Colorado Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie L. Fuller

TRIBUNE - Funeral for Johnnie L. Fuller, 43, will be 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at First Baptist Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Mark Randolph officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Mr. Fuller died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Jan. 29, 1957, at Fulton, Ky., the son of William D. and Mabel E. (Snyder) Fuller. A Greeley County resident since 1967, he was a contract laborer.

On Nov. 26, 1977, he married Kay Osborn at Pueblo, Colo. She survives. Other survivors are three daughters, Wendy, Colleen and Jennifer, all of the home; four brothers, Jerry, Guymon, Okla., Joe and Eugene, both of Tribune, and Danny, Dighton; and six sisters, Janet Smith, Padukah, Ky., Diane Church, Wellington, Peggy Fox, Scott City, Betty Bradfield, New Mexico, Lyda Burton, Tribune, and Pam Fuller, Salina. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials to the Johnnie L. Fuller Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Russell R. Binney

ULYSSES - Russell R. Binney, 76, of Ulysses, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born Oct. 8, 1923, at Ulysses, the son of Thomas Lemuel and Bertie C. (Bales) Binney. On Nov. 25, 1945, he married Virginia Crocker at Colorado Springs, Colo.

A lifetime resident of Ulysses, Mr. Binney was president of Binney Better Foods Inc. In 1952, he and his wife opened the Southside Grocery, which changed to Russ' Marketess'en in 1962, to Russ' Jack & Jill in 1972 and then to Russ' Food Center in 1995.

Mr. Binney was a member and elder of Shelton Memorial Christian Church, a member of American Legion Post No. 79 and Gideon International, was awarded the 1990 Grant County Citizen of the Year Award, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He had been the Grant County Republican chairperson, was a past president of the Ulysses Rotary Club in 1984-85, was a Paul Harris Fellow, and received the Rotary 2000 Distinguished Service Award.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Cary Binney, Ulysses; three daughters, Janet Stewart and Rhonda Anderson, both of Ulysses, and Tammy Steen, Houston; two sisters, Lucille Kellhofer, Caldwell, Idaho, and Ruth Morrision, Torrance, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Cecil Binney, Charles Binney, Paul Binney and Loren Binney; and one sister, Mary Kirkland.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold and Lemuel Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery, with military graveside rites by Ulysses American Legion Post No. 79.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to Ulysses Rotary Club, Shelton Memorial Christian Church Scholarship Fund, Grant County Museum, KJIL Great Plains Christian Radio or Gideon International, all in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Robert "Bob" Dunlap

Robert "Bob" Dunlap, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Jan. 11, 1922, at Ranger, Texas, the son of Carl R. and Lenora M. (Burge) Dunlap.

Mr. Dunlap worked as an auditor for Phoenix of London Insurance Company in Texas and then for the city of Monett, Mo., before moving to Garden City in 1974.

He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Force veteran, a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW, both at Garden City, and also belonged to the American Association of Retired Persons.

On Nov. 26, 1957, he married Ruth M. Lind at Rockwall, Texas. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Dale R. Dunlap, Waco, Texas, Pat L. Dunlap, Carrollton, Texas, and Robert D. Dunlap, Garden City; three daughters, Valerie A. Harper, Sarcoxie, Mo., Pamela B. Dunlap, Tulsa, Okla., and Joanna C. Meier, Garden City; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Dunlap.

Funeral will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Jim Lohmeyer officiating. Inurnment will take place later.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Emmaus House, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Jessie Joe "J.J." Martinez

MANTER - Funeral for Jessie Joe "J.J." Martinez, 17, of Manter, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. in Liberal Cemetery.

Jessie died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at her home in rural Stanton County.

The daughter of Jesse Tony Martinez and Barbara (Chapman) Beason, she was born Nov. 9, 1982, at Liberal. A Manter resident for five years, moving from Liberal, she was a junior at Stanton County High School at Johnson City and played the trumpet in the band.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Barbara and James Beason, Manter; three brothers, William Martinez, El Dorado, Michael Martinez, Tulsa, Okla., and Josh Barker, Lamar, Colo.; four sisters, Nacole Martinez, Liberal, Renee Cervantes, Amarillo, Texas, Valorie Martinez, Texas, and Jenifer Martinez, Holcomb; her grandparents, Leo and Isbella Martinez, Liberal; and a niece. She was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Pappy Chapman; and her grandparents, Lawrence and Mildred Chapman.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials to the Jessie Joe "J.J." Martinez Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.

Johnny T. Frank

SCOTT CITY - Johnny T. Frank, 81, of Aurora, Colo., died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, of a massive stroke at Hospice Aurora Care Center.

A farmer and truck driver, he was born at Scott City on Sept. 28, 1918. On June 23, 1945, he married Wilma A. Yates.

He served in the South Pacific during World War II with the 43rd Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army. After the war, he farmed in Ariba, Colo., and later owned and operated a semi-truck leased to Curtis Inc. of Denver.

Mr. Frank was a member of the American Legion of Ariba for 55 years, was a charter member of the VFW of Scott City and belonged to the T.E.V. Edelweise (German Club) of Commerce City, Colo., for 27 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Darlene Bernard, Craig, Colo., and Donnetta Phillips, Aurora; two sons, Gene Frank, Fort Collins, Colo., and Terry Frank, Kenmore, Wash.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Anna Beeson, and a brother, Alvin Frank, both of Scott City.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
