Benita Cruz
Vigil service for Benita Cruz, 85, of 1209 Wallace St., will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with rosary to follow. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Cruz died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in Garden City.
She was born Dec. 22, 1914, at Pasamonte, N.M., the daughter of Frank and Isabel (Martinez) Leal.
On Oct. 29, 1929, she married Benancio Cruz at Clayton, N.M. They moved from Clayton to Garden City in 1954. A homemaker, Mrs. Cruz also worked at various restaurants and at Garden City Laundry for 13 years. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Her hobbies were listening to music, quilting, crocheting, cooking and spending time with her family.
She is survived by six sons, Raymond Cruz, Sam Cruz and Alfred Cruz, all of Garden City, Regnaldo Cruz, Wichita, Frank Cruz, Kansas City, Mo., and Larry Cruz, Hutchinson; five daughters, Alice Aragon, Albuquerque, N.M., Rose Valdez, Raton, N.M., Adeline Ritz and Isabel Aguilera, both of Garden City, and Carol Orrantia, Lansing; three sisters, Millie Archuleta and Victoria Varela, both of Trinidad, N.M., and Dulcinia Cruz, Garden City; 42 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband died Aug. 16, 1990. She was also preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a brother and a sister.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Benita Cruz Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Alma Whaley
Funeral for Alma Whaley, 87, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at George McCarthy Historic Chapel, Pueblo, Colo. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Pueblo.
Mrs. Whaley died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000.
She was born July 22, 1913, at Pueblo, Colo., the daughter of John F. and Susie Raley.
Mrs. Whaley worked as a secretary for 57 years in the family business, Whaley & Son Motor Co. She enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters and their children, crafts, gardening, playing the organ and cooking.
She is survived by a son, Jim Whaley, Pueblo; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Raley, Pueblo, and Raymond Raley, Garden City; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Boyd Whaley; a son, Johnny Whaley; and two sisters, Belva Raley and Gertrude Robinson.

Norma D. Reeves
Norma D. Reeves, 78, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Sept. 3, 1922, at Selden, the daughter of Seth and Gladys (Cullen) Earnest. In 1927, the family moved to Garden City. She graduated from Holcomb High School and attended Garden City Community College for two years.
A homemaker, Mrs. Reeves had also worked in secretarial positions for 20 years for Dr. John Beggs and Tri County Gas Co. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the American Association of Retired Persons, and served on the board and was bereavement coordinator for M.A.S.H. Hospice. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.
On Aug. 14, 1967, she married W. Curtis Reeves at Trinidad, Colo. He died Dec. 12, 1986.. She was also preceded in death by five brothers.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Cox, Garden City, Sheila Salazar, Pecos, N.M., and Mary Ann Watson, Santa Fe, N.M.; a brother, Bill Earnest, Hays; a sister, Theda Webster, Hays; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. John S. Williams officiating.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
Lois Bly Lightcap
Lois Bly Lightcap, 80, of Dodge City, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Dodge City.
She was born March 5, 1920, at Pierceville, the daughter of Rollie and Nellie (Bly) Kiner. She attended schools in Pierceville and Garden City, and graduated from Dodge City High School in 1938.
A resident of Fort County since 1933, moving from Garden City, Mrs. Lightcap had worked for 11 years for Hillcrest Grocery Store and later worked for Bob Love Jewelry and then Payday IGA, all at Dodge City.
She was a member of First Christian Church, where she was active in all areas of the church and had been a Sunday school teacher for 20 years.
On Dec. 11, 1938, she married Leland Lightcap at Rozel. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Leland Lynn Lightcap, Hydro, Okla.; a great-grandson; and two grandsons.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Dodge City, with Lee Schroerlucke officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. today and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Good Samaritan Center, both in care of the funeral home.
Leo Wasinger
Funeral for Leo Wasinger, 76, of Garden City will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James Baker officiating. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery.
Mr. Wasinger died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born April 6, 1924, in St. Peter, the son of John and Odelia Appelhans Wasinger.
Mr. Wasinger was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. He belonged to Knights of Columbus and Eagles Lodge Aerie 3124, both of Garden City.
On Sept. 5, 1944, he married Louise Brungardt, at Garden City. She survives.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cletus and Richard Wasinger.
He also is survived by three sons, Gary Wasinger, Tim Wasinger and Rick Wasinger all of Garden City; three daughters, Mary Davis and Vicki Galliart, both of Garden City, and Michelle Garcia of Silt, Colo.; five brothers, Cyril Wasinger of Lakin, Sy Wasinger of Marienthal, Larry Wasinger of Woodland Park, Colo., Vernon Wasinger of Deerfield and Ronald Wasinger of Garden City; three sisters, Marnietta Pile and Anna Mae Stoppel of Garden City, and Kathleen Wasinger of Denver; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday at Price and Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or KSU Center for Basic Cancer Research, both in care of the funeral home.
Leila Mae Mooney
SCOTT CITY - Graveside service for Leila Mae Mooney, 93, will be 4 p.m. Saturday in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating.
Mrs. Mooney died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at her daughter's home in Longmont, Colo.
She was born Jan. 18, 1907, at Tunis, Mo., the daughter of Samuel Eldo and Laura Etta (Griffith) Barnhart.
A homemaker and bookkeeper, she had been a resident of Scott City since 1915, moving from Tunis. She moved to Longmont in December 1998 to live with her daughter.
Mrs. Mooney was a member of First Baptist Church and belonged to various Baptist Women's Group Circles, all at Scott City.
On Aug. 1, 1948, she married Henry Granville Mooney at Scott City. He died May 31, 1989, at Scott City. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Barnhart and Callie Lane; and two nephews.
She is survived by a daughter, LuCinda Dew, Longmont; three grandsons; three nieces; 17 great-nieces and nephews; 30 great-great-nieces and nephews; and three great-great-great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or Boulder County Hospice, both in care of the funeral home.
