Ella Levon Jantz
CIMARRON - Funeral for Ella Levon Jantz, 79, was to be 10:30 this morning at the First United Methodist Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating. Burial was to be in Cimarron Cemetery.
Mrs. Jantz died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Oct. 12, 1920, at Cimarron, the daughter of William and Nora (Davis) Herron. She graduated from Cimarron High School in 1938.
Mrs. Jantz worked for the Soil Conservation Office at Cimarron in the mid-1940s. A homemaker, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Rebekah Lodge.
On March 23, 1943, she married Millard G. Jantz at Cimarron. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Larry Jantz, Hays, and Rich Jantz, Lawrence; two daughters, Anita Ewart and Pam Gleason, both of Cimarron; a brother, John Herron, Cimarron; a sister, Ann Louise Flecher, Bellview, Wash.; three granddaughters; three grandsons; and one great-grandson. Her twin sister, Levere Timken, died March 8, 2000.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Shepherd's Center of Cimarron, both in care of Swaim Funeral Home, Cimarron.
Michael Martinez
Michael Martinez, 78, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Aug. 26, 1922, at Deerfield, the son of Frederico Del Rio and Jesus (Mejia) Martinez.
A lifetime resident of Garden City, he had farmed with his father and later farmed on his own. In 1945, while in California, he received his certification for plastering. He owned and operated Martinez Plastering in Garden City since 1975.
Mr. Martinez was a member of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division stationed at Fort Benning, Ga.
On Aug. 20, 1946, he married Lorena Gonzalez at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Gary Martinez, Holcomb; two daughters, Michelle Martinez-Herz, Seattle, and Beverly Curl, Roseville, Calif.; three sisters, Carmen Hayward, Sally Reynosa and Suzie Casillas, all of California; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Loren; a grandson; and five brothers and sisters.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Inurnment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
There will be visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia Society of America, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Doris V. Parsons
Funeral for Doris V. Parsons, 83, of Claflin, was to be 3 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church, Claflin, with the Rev. Janet Myers officiating. Burial was to be in Claflin Cemetery, followed by an Order of Eastern Star No. 487 service.
Mrs. Parsons died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at her home in Claflin. Her son, Dennis Parsons of Garden City, died Monday.
Born June 21, 1917, at Aetna, to Roger Price and Maggie May (Dyer) Bush, she had been a resident of Claflin for 57 years, moving from Wichita.
Mrs. Parsons had worked as a clerk at Claflin USD No. 354, retiring in 1991. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star No. 487 and United Methodist Women, and was secretary of the Claflin Housing Association.
On Jan. 4, 1936, she married Russell M. Parsons at Newton. He died July 2, 1991. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Crozier Bush, Roger Bush and Rudy Bush.
She is survived by two sons, Larry Parsons, Bridgeport, W.Va., and Steve Parsons, Wichita; two daughters, Sandy Chapman, Emporia, and Linda Burton, Berryton; two brothers, Duane Bush, of Isabelle, and Vernon Bush, Alva, Okla.; a sister, Margaret Taylor; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Claflin Ambulance or Claflin Community Scholarship, both in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 415 N. Main St., Hoisington, KS 67544.
Dennis D. Parsons
Dennis D. Parsons, D.D.S., F.A.G.D., 56, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born June 22, 1944, at Claflin, the son of Russel and Doris (Bush) Parsons.
He attended schools at Claflin, graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University and from dental school at UMKC. He moved to Dighton in 1970 and started his dental career. After one year in Dighton, he moved to Garden City.
Dr. Parsons was a member of the Presbyterian Church, UMKC Alumni, American Dental Association, Kansas Dental Association and the Central District Dental Society, was a diplomat of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and served on the board of trustees at Kansas Wesleyan University.
He sponsored many sports and services in Garden City over the years and helped start the high school baseball program here. He enjoyed fishing, watching and listening to college and professional sports, astronomy, reading, museums, history, the arts, traveling, and especially enjoyed his work as a dentist and visiting with people.
In June 1968, he married Susan Jones at Kansas City, Mo. He married Mickey Hearn in April 1972 at Raton, N.M. In September 1997, he married Joan Whippo at Garden City.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; three sons, Mike Parsons, Overland Park, Breven Parsons, San Diego, and Heith Parsons, Albuquerque, N.M.; a stepson, Lucas Whippo, and a stepdaughter, Aubrey Whippo, both of the home; two brothers, Larry Parsons, Charleston, W.Va., and Steve Parsons, Wichita; two sisters, Sandy Chapman, Emporia, and Linda Burton, Berryton; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City. The Rev. David Sweley will officiate, assisted by the Rev. William Salmon. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Dennis Parsons Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Claude L. King
ULYSSES - Funeral for Claude L. King, 72, of Ulysses, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton and the Rev. Sam Bynum officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Mr. King died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
The son of C.N. and Evah (Speaks) King, he was born June 23, 1928, on the family farmstead in Ulysses. A lifetime resident of Ulysses, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
On Sept. 24, 1949, he married Doris A. Spain at Dallas. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Jerrie Brooks, Scott City; and two sisters, Hazel Crocker and Ruby Williams, both of Ulysses. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jolynn Wood; a son, James Nolan King; a brother, Lesley King; and a sister, Gladys Sewell.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Grant County Museum, the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
Rose K. Rietcheck
Vigil service for Rose K. Rietcheck, 101, of Hoxie, will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Frances Catholic Church, Hoxie, with the Rev. Merlin Kieffer officiating. Burial will be in St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, Hoxie.
Mrs. Rietcheck died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Sheridan County Hospital in Hoxie.
She was born April 11, 1899, in a sod house near St. Theresa in Wichita County, the daughter of Henry W. and Carolina (Busche) Geerdes.
A 1919 graduate of Keisters Ladies Tailoring College at Omaha, Neb., she moved to Herndon, Neb., during the 1920s where she worked in a bakery and creamery and was a seamstress.
On Feb. 26, 1930, she married John Rietcheck at Seguin. They lived on a farm west of Hoxie and later moved to Seguin where they continued farming until moving to Hoxie in 1970.
Mrs. Rietcheck wrote the Seguin news items for the Hoxie Sentinel for many years and served as a 4-H leader when her children were young. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Frances Catholic Church and St. Frances Sodality, both at Hoxie.
Her husband died Feb. 4, 1994. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert; four brothers, John Geerdes, Henry Geerdes, Joseph Geerdes and George Geerdes; and two sisters, Helena Barenberg and Theresa Kreck.
She is survived by three sons, Alfred, Elmer and Vernon, all of Hoxie; three daughters, Dorothy Ostmeyer, Garden City, Carolyn Gatschet, Hays, and Phyllis Melenson, Prairie Village; a sister, Anne Reinert, Hoxie; 28 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Sheridan County Long Term Care Unit, both in care of the funeral home.
