W.E. "Pete" Bogerd
CIMARRON - Funeral for W.E. "Pete" Bogerd, 89, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Valleyview Bible Church, Cimarron. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Wayne Cemetery
at Lewis. The Rev. Stuart Pederson will officiate.
Mr. Bogerd died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.
He was born Feb. 17, 1911, in Edwards County, the son of Peter and Clara (Sherman) Bogerd. He attended school in Lewis, graduating from Lewis High School in 1929.
Mr. Bogerd was involved in farming in the Lewis area until moving to Cimarron in 1937. In April 1939, he married Corinne Orno of Ingalls. He married Orpha M. Jeanne Greenstreet on March 2, 1968, at Clayton, N.M. They lived in Cimarron, where he continued farming operations southwest of Ingalls, retiring in 1990.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Sharon Strecker, Scott City, and Darla Jean Craner, Levittown, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Karyn Clark, Cimarron; a brother, Robert Bogerd, Lewis; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Martina Bogerd; and a stepson, Lloyd Greenstreet.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the church or the American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral chapel.
Walter C. "Wally" Giebler
Parish vigil service for Walter C. "Wally" Giebler, 88, of Hays, will be 7 tonight at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Church, Hays, with the Rev. Earl Befort officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays, with military graveside honors by the Hays VFW.
Mr. Giebler died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at St. Anthony Campus of Hays Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 10, 1912, at Hays, the son of Joseph J. and Lucy (Gauss) Giebler. A 1930 graduate of Hays High School, he was an Army veteran of World War II.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Giebler was a plumber for Glassman-Staab. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the VFW.
On Feb. 17, 1941, he married Aileen Weigel at Hays. She survives. Other survivors are two sons, Philip, Garden City, and Christopher, Burley, Idaho; two daughters, Nancy Williams, Great Bend, and Marlene Brown, Mankato; a brother, Ralph Giebler, Hays; a sister, Rita Marie Frederickson, West Covina, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson; a brother, Alfred; and a sister, Victoria.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the youth baseball programs of the Hays Recreation Commission, in care of the chapel, P.O. Box 86, Hays, KS 67601.
Margaret M. Ashcraft
CIMARRON - Margaret M. Ashcraft, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in rural Ford County.
The accident also took the life of her husband, Floyd A. Ashcraft, whom she married on Dec. 24, 1947, at Cimarron.
Born Oct. 11, 1919, at Eakly, Okla., she was the daughter of Albert H. and Ola (Murray) Adams.
Mrs. Ashcraft was a hospital attendant at the Kansas Soldiers Home at Fort Dodge for many years. She was a member of Cimarron First Christian Church.
She is survived by a brother, Wilbur; a sister, Jennie; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, William Conder; two brothers, Gordon and Earl; and a grandson.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Jon Hanna officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.
Friends may sign the register book from noon to 6 p.m. Friday at Burkhart's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral chapel, P.O. Box 786, Cimarron, KS 67835.
Floyd A. "Art" Ashcraft
CIMARRON - Floyd A. "Art" Ashcraft, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in rural Ford County.
The accident also took the life of his wife, Margaret Mary (Adams) Ashcraft, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1947, at Cimarron.
Born Aug. 30, 1920, at Cimarron, he was the son of Theodore and Koziah Elizabeth (Weaver) Ashcraft. A lifetime area resident, he graduated from Cimarron High School.
Mr. Ashcraft was a maintenance supervisor for USD 102, Cimarron, for many years. He served on the Cimarron Fire Department for 10 years, during which time he became chief. He was a member of First Christian Church and the VFW and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He is survived by a brother, Charlie; a sister, Nancy Burnett; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard; a stepson, William Earl Conder; and a grandson.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Jon Hanna officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery, with military graveside rights by Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714.
Friends may sign the register book from noon to 6 p.m. Friday at Burkhart's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Cimarron.
Martin Perez
Martin Perez, 39, of 2111 Arapahoe Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Nov. 29, 1960, at Michoacan, Mexico, the son of Benito and Esperanza (Landers) Perez.
A Garden City resident since August 1997, moving from California, he worked for the shipping department at IBP for three years. His hobbies included soccer, watching television, and spending time with family and friends.
In 1987, he married Graciela Rodriguez in California. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Jose Manuel Rodriguez and Josue Montoya, a daughter, Rosa Montoya, and a granddaughter, all of the home; his parents, Michoacan; three brothers, Benito Perez Jr., California, Jose Perez, Garden City, and Miguel Perez, Michoacan; and three sisters, Ramona Perez, California, Maria Perez, Michoacan, and Carmen Perez, Guadalajara, Mexico.
Funeral and burial is planned for later in Porterville, Calif.
Visitation hours are until 5 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
David P. Unruh
MONTEZUMA - David P. Unruh, 82, of Montezuma, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City, after a sudden illness.
He was born Feb. 1, 1918, at Montezuma, the son of Peter T. and Dina (Buller) Unruh.
A farm laborer, Mr. Unruh spent most of his life in Montezuma. He was a member of Church of God in Christ Mennonite.
On Oct. 16, 1955, he married Susanna K. Wiens at Montezuma. She survives. Other survivors are a son, Brian Unruh, Copeland; two daughters, Janette Unruh and Joy Unruh, both of Montezuma; two brothers, Cornelius Unruh, Montezuma, and Frank Unruh, West Point, Miss.; and two sisters, Lydia Koehn and Vada Unruh, both of Montezuma. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Abraham Unruh, Tobias Unruh, John Unruh, Cecil Unruh and Henry Unruh; and five sisters, Elizabeth Frank, Nettie Koehn, Lena Unruh, Emma Unruh and Ida Toews.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Edwin Classen, Charles Schmidt and James Koehn, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Gospel Tract & Bible Society or the American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
Oscar Earl Friend
SYRACUSE - Oscar Earl Friend, 83, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at the Crystal Bell Senior Home in Sun City, Ariz.
He was born Oct. 24, 1916, at Pratt, the son of Charles M. and Clara (Beaver) Friend.
On April 13, 1941, he married Mary Frances Cheatum at Alva, Okla. The family lived in Pratt in 1941 where he worked as a tool and die maker for Boeing Aircraft. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945 in New Guinea, Australia and the Philippines, receiving an honorable discharge.
The family moved to Syracuse in 1945 and managed a farm and a flower shop. In 1954, he worked as an implement salesman in Ulysses. In 1958, he was employed as a district manager for Gehl Manufacturing Co., a cattle feed equipment company out of McCook, Neb. In 1984, they retired to Denver, then moved to Sun City in 1985. His wife died Oct. 22, 1996.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Sue New, Cumming, Ga.; a son, David Earl Friend, London; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was Sept. 18 at Best Funeral Service Chapel in Sun City.
A joint memorial inurnment service for Mr. Friend and his wife will begin at 1 p.m. MST Friday in Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. William Fitzgerrel officiating.
