Helena A. Gavin
Vigil service for Helena A. Gavin, 87, will be 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. James Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Gavin died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Aug. 4, 1912, in Sedgwick County, the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Hoey) Ward. In 1930, she graduated from high school in Newkirk, Okla., where she lived before moving to Garden City in 1970.
A homemaker, she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.
On Nov. 3, 1937, she married Edward Blimm at Newkirk. He died Feb. 10, 1965. On Jan. 29, 1972, she married Eddie Gavin at Garden City. He died Sept. 1, 1983. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Cox, Garden City, and Teresa Hemingway, Wheeling, W.Va.; a son, Donald Blimm, Ponca City, Okla.; a brother, Paul Ward, Carson City, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
John Andrew Christie
Graveside service for John Andrew Christie, 94, a former Garden City resident, was to be 11 this morning in Graceland Cemetery, Burlington.
Mr. Christie died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Chase County Health Center in Cottonwood Falls.
He was born May 27, 1906, at Hot Springs, Ark., the son of James Franklin and Clara May (Harrison) Christie.
Most of Mr. Christie's adult life was spent in Garden City, where he owned and operated a sporting goods store for 20 years. In his early years, he played semi-pro baseball and was a pitcher.
After retiring in 1969, he moved to Burlington, where he had been a member of the United Methodist Church. He also belonged to the Lions Club and the Fraternal Order of Elks. Since September 1999, he had been a resident of the Chase County Health Center.
On Nov. 23, 1929, he married Roberta Haehn at Garnett. She died Aug. 23, 1974. On Aug. 23, 1977, he married Josephine Adkins Caruthers at Wichita. She survives at Emporia. He is also survived by a son, Jack Christie, Wichita; a daughter, Chris Siler, Hays; a stepson, Gary Caruthers, Overland Park; a stepdaughter, Donna Jackson, New Strawn; two sisters, Mable Setters, Ottawa, and Corrine Cranor, Long Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Roy Ivey
SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Roy Ivey, 74, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mr. Ivey died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born Nov. 2, 1925, at Bivins, Texas, the son of Joseph Richard Alexander and Cora Lynch Ivey.
A Scott County resident since 1947, moving from East Texas, he worked for 33 years for the MOPAC Railroad, the Southern Pacific and the Union Pacific until he retired, and was a lifetime dairy farmer. He was a member of the Wesleyan Church, Scott City.
On March 7, 1948, he married Jessie Lee Bell at Scott City. She survives. He is also survived by four sons, Roy Richard Ivey, Dunlap, Tenn., William Preston Ivey, Plains, Jackie Dwayne Ivey and Anthony Edward Ivey, both of Scott City; four daughters, Betty Lee Bailey, Bonnie Sue Stewart and Ruby Ann Latham, all of Scott City, and Peggy Joyce Cooper, Ponca City, Okla.; two brothers, George Dennis Ivey, Teague, Texas, and Jessie Ivey, Dallas; two sisters, Opal Drozjock, Beachwood, N.J., and Ona Mae Jackson, Balch Springs, Texas; 35 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jacqueline; two brothers; one sister; and one granddaughter.

Katherine Mayfield
Katherine Mayfield, 85, of Dodge City, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Manor of the Plains Nursing Home in Dodge City.
She was born July 9, 1915, in Ford County, the daughter of Everett and Ida (Hayes) Smith. She was raised in the Mulberry and Ford communities, and graduated from Ford High School in 1933.
On July 21, 1936, she married Esker T. Mayfield at Garden City. After their marriage, they resided in Ford County until moving to southwest Hodgeman County in 1945. They farmed there until retiring in 1981 and moving to Dodge City. He died Sept. 23, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald Mayfield.
A homemaker, Mrs. Mayfield was a member of Grace Community Church at Dodge City.
She is survived by a son, Raymond Mayfield, Garden City; two daughters, Nina DuPree and Sharon Saunders, both of Dodge City; a sister, Jessie Mae Askew, Dodge City; a brother, Harold Smith, Miles City, Mont.; a daughter-in-law, Shelby Mayfield, Jetmore; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with the Rev. Kirk Larson officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.
Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie or Grace Community Church, both in care of the funeral home.
Ruth C. Rice
Funeral for Ruth C. Rice, 80, will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Revs. David Sweley and Juanita Wiseman officiating. Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Lakin Cemetery.
Mrs. Rice died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born Dec. 12, 1919, at Bailey Hospital in Garden City, the daughter of Earle William and Pearl Grace (Gooding) Campbell. She grew up in Lakin, graduated from Lakin High School in 1937, and received a degree in home economics from Kansas State University in 1941.
After teaching for about two years in Cullison and Sacramento, Calif., she worked with the American Red Cross in Texas during World War II. After the war, Mrs. Rice worked for Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Kansas Gas and Electric Co., and Kearny County Bank before marrying Jack M. Rice on April 16, 1950, at Lakin.
She and her husband lived in Lakin for 30 years and in Garden City for the past 20 years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
A homemaker, Mrs. Rice was a member and elder of the Presbyterian Church, and belonged to P.E.O. Chapter FF and the Monday Club. She enjoyed painting, writing, history, reading, golf, family and friends, and her church.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, Clark H. Rice and Earle D. Rice, both of Garden City; a sister, Nancy Davison, Stockton, Calif.; three grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one niece.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Dorothy Maxine Hilliard
MONTEZUMA - Graveside service for Dorothy Maxine Hilliard, 79, a former Gray County resident, will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma, with the Rev. Gene Eshleman officiating.
Mrs. Hilliard died Dec. 25, 1999, at Branson, Mo.
She was born Sept. 23, 1920, at Montezuma, the daughter of Frank and Ora Markel.
On Aug. 5, 1939, she married Lester Eugene Hilliard at Dodge City. He died Nov. 25, 1997. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter Markel; and two sisters, Velma Markel and Bessie Reinert.
She is survived by three sons, Bob Hilliard, Carrollton, Ga., Mike Hilliard, Purcell, Okla., and Steve Hilliard, Forsyth, Mo.; a daughter, Pat Legault, New Brunswick, Canada; two sisters, Bobbie Lampe, Dodge City, and Zella Rohrbaugh, North Fork, Calif.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Montezuma Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Deborah (Brakey) Sivils
Memorial service for Deborah (Brakey) Sivils, 41, will be 6 p.m. Wednesday at Moore-Howard Berkley Park Funeral Chapel in Denver.
Mrs. Sivils died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, in Denver.
The daughter of Bud and Beverly (Lile) Brakey, she was born Aug. 8, 1958, at Lakin. She was a 1976 graduate of Garden City High School.
She is survived by her husband, Roger Sivils, two sons, C.J. and Eric, and a daughter, Chelsea, all of the home. Other survivors are her mother, Garden City; a brother, Gregg Brakey, Sheridan Lake, Colo.; and a sister, Becky Brakey, Leoti. She was preceded in death by her father.
